New neighbors stole our bin

Actually can't believe I'm writing this but I think it's pretty amusing plus I've recently lost the will with pretty much everyone and need to share this before I lose the plot totally. 😂😂😂

New neighbors next door moved in yesterday..... I haven't met them yet...... It was recycling day yesterday and we have two recycling bins clearly marked with our house number on the lid and side of each the bin...... Went on school run as they were still moving in....... Came back home to find they had pinched one of my bins off my drive and stuffed it to full with their packagin brown boxes etc

  1. why?
  2. really why?
  3. I'm really annoyed because I'm going to have to go over there at some point today and ask for my bin back that I have to pay extra for having an additional bin and get to look like a dickhead neighbor being petty about bins. Great start to a new neighbor relationship but I can't let them have it or get away with it can I??
  4. I really wish I was making this up honestly

Our bins are weighed (I'm in Ireland) and we pay per lift and pay per kilo of rubbish, so I'm very territorial about my bins 😂 Have identifying marks all over them.

Another point, if they're so free and easy with your bins, is that if they put non-recyclable stuff in it you'll be held responsible.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 08/11/2018 12:04

Just to play devils advocate.. I’m imaging stressful moving day, rubbish everywhere and a conversation like ‘where’s the bin?’ ‘Oh there’s two outside next door, one must be ours’ and moving guys filling it.

Just be nice and explain but I would give them the benefit of the doubt.

lilmishap · 08/11/2018 12:05

Threewheeler Me too! I had a bin feud that lasted a full 4 months, lots of black bags (they'd fill mine with carriers) and had a set of gloves for the emptying and dumping back in their bin.
Council eventually sent them a letter but took their time doing it. Bizarre as next door had their own bin.

Racecardriver · 08/11/2018 12:06

Buy some chocolates or a pot plan for when you pop round so it looks like you are super nice and not at all angry. I know it’s tempting to be kissed off but it’s not worth the aggro or a neighbour dispute.

MiggledyHiggins · 08/11/2018 12:08

Oh stop being a wuss - go over there and say that they have your bin, you pay for it and could they please return it emptied of their rubbish. Its got your number all over it so no way did they 'mistake' it for theirs.

If you don't, they will take the piss in other ways - parking on your drive, or clogging up communal areas because they know you are a doormat and wont say boo to them.

imaflutteringkite · 08/11/2018 12:13

I'll come and get it. We have two bins, the only people on the street who do, and people are forever stealing one of them. I'm always going out and dragging it back to my house.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 08/11/2018 12:13

People make mistakes... And also some people are cheeky fuckers....

So
1.
They my have taken it assuming it was their houses (that you had naughtily been using their bin when house was empty) .

  1. They may have taken it because they could... Knowing it was yours... Relying on you not going around to ask for it back.

1 requires cheery welcome and 'seems to be misunderstanding'.

2 requires... Please leave our bin where it is

saffyBoo · 08/11/2018 12:16

ThreeWheeler1 haha

I rather like your style *Juells" .

But then my dad used to follow people who had allowed their dog to mess on the pavement ,hand them a piece of cardboard and say " I believe you've dropped something "

saffyBoo · 08/11/2018 12:20

Thanks for the comments just to be clear apart from giant neon numbers on the bin it also has an “approved second bin” sticker from the council.

I am a wuss yes that’s correct

I’m also still giving it until tonight for them to realise and sort it

I get bin rage too. I keep my bins nice abs clean, I have two recycling, one general waste and one garden waste. New neighbours didn't steal mine but put their general waste in my recycling. I removed the bags and put them on their drive. That's as brave as I get.

JanetLovesJason · 08/11/2018 12:28

You need to draw a firm line now of they will take the piss forever. Arseweasels.

dontalltalkatonce · 08/11/2018 12:29

I'm with Juells. How do you go through life being such a doormat? 'Ooo, I don't like confrontation!' so you'd rather be ripped off? You don't need to do any confrontation, you just go over, take their stuff out, put it to the side and wheel your bin back. It's hardly climbing Mt Everest.

If I moved somewhere new, I might not know to examine bin lids for house numbers, and if I saw 2 bins in front of 2 houses might make the same assumption.

If you're so presumptuous you'd pinch a fucking bin from in front of another house you are a CF thief. C'mon. There's NO way anyone who's not a total pisstaker can remove a bin that has a number on it, as the OP's bins do, from in front of a house as a mistake.

Either grow a spine or get mugged off, OP, the choice is yours.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 08/11/2018 12:30

So there are neon numbers and a sticker saying it is a second bin and yet

I’m also still giving it until tonight for them to realise and sort it

Why??? They obviously ignored all the indicators suggesting this was not their bin so what makes you think they will suddenly empty it and return it to you? The chances are they will think nothing more of this bin and if they do notice what's to stop them in the next few hours removing the neon stickers and claiming it is their bin?

Please go round and ask for it back. It's yours and you have paid for it would you let them use it if it was a bike or your driveway? It is still your property.

dontalltalkatonce · 08/11/2018 12:30

They're not going to realise and sort it, and there's nothing cute about being a mug.

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/11/2018 12:32

Have they got their own bin? If their bin is missing they probably think youve stolen theirs.

dontalltalkatonce · 08/11/2018 12:32

Then get bin locks. We had to do this in one house we lived in where you couldn't wheel the bins to the back garden and twat neighbours kept putting their rubbish in our bin.

dontalltalkatonce · 08/11/2018 12:33

If their bin is missing they probably think youve stolen theirs.

It has an 'approved 2nd bin' sticker on it from the council.

HauntedPencil · 08/11/2018 12:35

Wow! This is epic.

I'd just go over now, be nice about it but say "I think you've accidentally taken my bin" and get it back.

saffyBoo · 08/11/2018 12:36

I’m scared of you lot now!

Hoping it was a mistake that’s why I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt. Moving is stressful etc but if it doesn’t return their obs CF

Sammichface · 08/11/2018 12:37

Go get your bin! Don't wait until tonight

Amber0685 · 08/11/2018 12:37

I can only think you are waiting until tonight as someone else, DP maybe gets home and it is them you will get to go and get the bin? Am I right OP?

cees · 08/11/2018 12:38

Oh my op you are a doormat, it is clearly marked as yours, there doesn't have to be a big confrontation. Take it back after you knock and tell them to empty it. I'd be fuming but you don't need to show that you are. Don't be overly nice just state the facts and get your bin back.

LittleMissPonsible · 08/11/2018 12:38

This happened to me twice!

The first time I went straight round and was polite and friendly but quite direct. The new neighbours looked really surprised but did give it back.

The second time it happened with different neighbours I was less certain to begin with so didn’t go round straight away, then by the time I was certain I didn’t feel like I could do it. It was the same couple who sold to both of these neighbours and I think they were telling the buyers the bins were theirs, hence the surprised looks the first time and that it happened again. This couple also sold our house to us and had form for telling porkies. Angry

RomanyRoots · 08/11/2018 12:39

You are clearly happy to lose the money you pay for a second bin rather than go and sort it out.
You know it will be dark tonight and they'll make this excuse offering tomorrow.
Tomorrow never comes, step up or be prepared to pay for their bin.
I don't understand what is so difficult tbh.
