New neighbors stole our bin

Actually can't believe I'm writing this but I think it's pretty amusing plus I've recently lost the will with pretty much everyone and need to share this before I lose the plot totally. 😂😂😂

New neighbors next door moved in yesterday..... I haven't met them yet...... It was recycling day yesterday and we have two recycling bins clearly marked with our house number on the lid and side of each the bin...... Went on school run as they were still moving in....... Came back home to find they had pinched one of my bins off my drive and stuffed it to full with their packagin brown boxes etc

  1. why?
  2. really why?
  3. I'm really annoyed because I'm going to have to go over there at some point today and ask for my bin back that I have to pay extra for having an additional bin and get to look like a dickhead neighbor being petty about bins. Great start to a new neighbor relationship but I can't let them have it or get away with it can I??
  4. I really wish I was making this up honestly

Thanks for the people taking this so seriously but I did say in my original post it's amusing meaning not so serious

I haven’t read the full thread, but must confess to being an accidental bin thief... (sorry).

My neighbour and I have identical recycling bags, except for the codes on the side. I’d chanced my arm by leaving a couple of extra bags out next to my bin, and when they’d been collected they were left so I plopped them into what I thought was my bin as I ran out the door for college.

Returned to find the bags back next to my bin, realised what had happened and apologised to the neighbours immediately.

They were fine with it, we laughed- I wouldn’t say your neighbours would have a problem if you just say ‘errr that’s actually my bin’.

Just go and say they seem to have taken your bin and you need it back.
As it is full of their rubbish and if their bin is empty though doubt it, you can take their bin until the next collection day. If both are full look kind of distraught about how they are going to empty your bin, oh dear! but they have to do it. Just in the passing say, don't know how they made the mistake as bins clearly marked. Now this is me being very restrained as I would really want to empty the rubbish out on their property and just take back my bin. But new neighbours so trying to keep the peace.

My DMs neighbour used to take DMs clean food recycle bin every week as she put her peelings etc in a biodegradable bags inside the bin so it stayed clean and not full of sticky rotten food in the bottom. Every week she cleaned next doors bin, put it out as her own and neighbour took it again. I house numbered her bin so neighbour can’t take it now

And to think, upstairs neighbour and I both leave our bins on the street. Okay not the pavement itself but on a small piece of land next to our houses but right there in the open and neither bin moves anywhere. And anyone can use them if they want. (I'd rather they use my bin than littering up my street)

It just goes to show that good old fashioned WEEKLY pick ups and normal sized wheelie bins is what we all need! If mine does get too full I pop my bag in the neighbours and vice versa. I would love there to be recycling around here other than what I take to the free tip myself (in the centre of the village and open 7 days a week!) but I don't want our weekly pick ups to ever change. It looks like that's a big problem resulting in pilfered bins huh?

Glad you got your bin back OP. And your DH did the right thing. It's not his fault they wouldn't answer the door. Maybe they're some of these people I only ever see on MN who point blank refuse to answer their own door if the visitor hasn't pre-booked their visit.
