Does everyone on MN - except me - have a high flying highly paid highly stressful job

Is anyone a hairdresser married to a mechanic? Nursery nurse married to a delivery driver?

I keep reading about women having to go back to work or they'll fall off the career ladder and never recover. Everyone seems so BUSY and STRESSED and high flying. Or they've burnt out and have downsized so they can bake bread.

Is anyone else just pootling along like me - not setting the world alight with their brilliance and ambition?

No not me, I’m a scum of the earth SAHM.

Vitalogy · 08/11/2018 07:22

I'm pootling.

megletthesecond · 08/11/2018 07:22

Nope. I'm just boring old office admin.
Mind you, it's still horribly stressful as we've been understaffed for a couple of years 🙄.

THEsonofaBITCH · 08/11/2018 07:24

I do now, but have also been a janitor, a gardener and other jobs - does it matter?

adaline · 08/11/2018 07:24

I'm pootling too and I love it. Retail supervisor married to a plasterer!

We're not stinking rich but we're perfectly comfortable, own our home and have very cheap third hand cars. Both have lives and jobs that finish at 4/6 on the dot respectively

MattBerrysHair · 08/11/2018 07:25

Nope, I'm a self-employed gardener and I work 18 hours a week due to disability and rely on benefits to top up my income.

RollerJed · 08/11/2018 07:26

Yes, but it's going to change soon and I'm going to [whispers] step off the ladder for a while.

I just had 4 months off and am back in a new role a few months and want more time.

SnuggyBuggy · 08/11/2018 07:26

I've had the stressful part but not the high flying part

ICJump · 08/11/2018 07:27

I do part time admin in a very flexible work place.

AnonyMousee · 08/11/2018 07:27

Haha I agree. I also feel there are a lot of massive grammar nazis and very judgemental women who I imagine in real life are alike to old fashioned 'matrons' who would also punish me for being left handed.

Where are all my fellow common, cockney girls at???

SD1978 · 08/11/2018 07:28

Or SAHM seems popular. Not knocking that in case it sounds da hat way. But yeah. High flying career and on at least 6 figures. Or SAHM seems the most often commented way to go!

Oblomov18 · 08/11/2018 07:28

Every thread I read they are on £100-200k. In the City.
Not like me. I only work part time.

Letsmoveondude · 08/11/2018 07:32

I do fuck all, business admin. I don’t even work on our contracts now. My husband is brilliant, but we decided not long ago that the hours that are required to fulfil some of our contracts would mean that really, only one of us could be out, doing what we do as childcare was almost impossible to find full time for what we needed in our area, and even with childcare/ dog care and the extra hours from the cleaner we wouldn’t be much better off. Right decision really for us really.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 08/11/2018 07:34

Whenever there's a post about income, the average income of the MNetters that post theirs is way too high to be representative of reality. Either those with lower incomes don't post, those with higher incomes post (?braggy) or there's a bit of truth bending

Notmorewashing · 08/11/2018 07:36

I am normal! I agree it’s either 6 figure high flyer or SAHM with 6 figure husband. No poorer husbands in sight!

Nenic · 08/11/2018 07:38

I work in a warehouse

musthavejumpers · 08/11/2018 07:40

I've not worked for 17 years, I think I'm unemployable but more than happy that way. It can be a bit depressing reading on here sometimes but sure there are lots of us who aren't high flying career women.

Vampiratequeen · 08/11/2018 07:40

No I have 2 part time jobs and I am married to a chef.

IamtheMistressofmyFate · 08/11/2018 07:42

All these high flying husbands who are too busy being important to run the vacuum over the floor or make an omelette. Surely there are husbands who aren't constantly on conference calls with New York or burning the midnight oil closing a deal.

Not being sneery btw just want to know if there are any non executives on here!

I work in retail and my partner pulls coffee

pandarific · 08/11/2018 07:42

It's a common demographic trend on mn toward what the British consider the 'middle classes' though isn't it? So pretty well educated (mostly) women who do a range of jobs to suit their circumstances.

I think NetMums is meant to be more working class, but I may have just assumed that.

MadameJosephine · 08/11/2018 07:43

Single parent and NHS midwife so I tick the stressed box but definitely not the high paid high flier ones!

Henryismyfriend · 08/11/2018 07:43

Nope I work in a hotel full time and married to erm, no one 🤣
It's still stressful though at times. Though not as stressful as when I worked in care .
I Think stress is relative. I often remind myself these days it's not life and death if someone waits "half an hour" (2 or 3 minutes) to get served alcohol --though you'd think it was🙄-
I'm just grateful I have a job and a work ethic instilled by my parents that mean I've always had one and always done my best.

Kickassbitch · 08/11/2018 07:44

We do have our own business, but its a very modest garage, I do admin, books, serve petrol, do invoices. My DH is a mechanic and MOT tester, in the 9 years we have had it we run it from ground level alongside a few staff. Where only seen as the bosses if there is a problem or a decision needs making. Were technically company directors, but never use that title unless it goes on official paper work/contracts. If people ask, we work in a garage, never mention we own apart from the rare occasion it comes up.
So no we are not high flying, we both work in very modest jobs. We could and I'm sure some would play on the fact that we own the business and are directors to posh it up but to me, I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, would make us look like jumped up twats.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 08/11/2018 07:44

Everyone also has tall, slim sporty children who have music or sports bursaries for selective private schools or go selective state schools. No one has an average child who potters along in the middle at a bog standard comp.
