The Moth - excellent storytelling and very thought provoking
Extraordinary Stories Podcast - good mix of true crime and, err, extraordinary stories.
All Killa No Filla - v funny, especially if you like pods where the hosts go off in a tangent.
Heavyweight - Hilarious host, very quirky true stories, told person to person.
Imagined Life - this is a new one where each week they tell the story of a notable person from the childhood to present day, in the first person. Their identity is only revealed at the end.
Swindled - all about scammers and swindlers, some more prominent than others.

If you’re Scottish, Podlitical is good. A half hour round up of what’s been happening at holyrood and Westminster

Yay my sister just emailed to say she finally pressed the purple button too- down the rabbit hole with you both!

Although they're only a few episodes long each, I'll push "Case Notes" and "S-Town" all day and all night, because they have a sort of literary quality that, personally, I love. If anyone else knows of anything similar... (already tried Serial and found it okay but not as good as S-Town)

  • Interested in any more radfem podcast suggestions anyone has.

Trouble is, between social media incl Mumsnet, reading a book, listening to radio (nearly the same, I suppose) and life in general, there's not much time for podcasts!

In the interests of balance, I hated 'Up and Vanished'. The host seriously gave me the rage, and there were whole episodes dedicated to him congratulating himself. Compared with properly-edited and put-together projects like 'Serial' and 'In the Dark' I found it maddeningly slapdash - he was putting episodes out as soon as he finished them so it was more like following a live investigation than a well-crafted documentary series, which meant unbelievable amounts of blind alleys and 'leads' which went absolutely nowhere (not to mention completely irrelevant tangents).

I've only fairly recently got into listening to podcasts, but my favourites so far are:

Fortunately with Jane Glover and Fi Garvey - hilarious and they have some good guests too.
Friday Night Comedy (Radio 4), although I prefer The News Quiz
Kermode and Mayo's Film Review - love listening to this, even though I rarely get to the cinema these days
Standard Issue - I don't listen to the weekly podcast often, but they do gigcasts, where they have 3 or 4 female (usually) guests and ask them all a series of questions. They've had some amazing guests over the last couple of years...well worth going back through the back catalogue to search these out.

My most recent find is Simon Mayo's Books of the Year. For fans of his Radio 2 show (pre-Jo Whiley days), he's teamed up with Matt Williams again for this. They're interviewing one or two authors each week/fortnight...I'm going through the back catalogue at the moment and have discovered some new authors and books I wouldn't have come across otherwise. Well worth listening to if you like books.

Mirths and Monsters. Love this one!

As far as true crime goes I love They Walk Among Us. UK true crime, very well done.
If you like dark humour and true crime then try Colour Me Dead. Stay out of chalk lines.....

Ear Hustle about life in San Quentin prison
The Butterfly Effect about online porn
Caliphate (that woman rocks) about a journalist hunting Isis
You Must Remember This about the movie world
Slow Burn on Bill Clinton (the Watergate one is excellent too)
The Week Unwrapped (I'm biassed as I used to be on it!)

I don't have enough life for all the podcasts I want to listen to!

I second No Such Thing as a Fish, it's really funny. I listen to it in the gym when I do my stretches and am always snorting with laughter and putting myself off.

Another recommendation for Joan and Jehrica SO SO FUNNY
Also ‘where shall we begin’ by Ester Perel I have loved this. So eye opening and wonderful about relationships

For those who use podcasts to send them to sleep, try Game of Drones. Designed as a sleep aid.
The bloke has a very soporific voice and he takes an episode of Game of Thrones and then witters on about it for over an hour, going off on equally boring tangents.

Yy to "where shall we begin", I loved it. I find her comments/questions to the couples so interesting. And her outlook is very modern, liberal, pro-women.

@QuimReaper In that case listen to Done Disappeared, a true crime podcast parody, it’s hilarious! The more podcasts you’re familiar with the better as they parody quite a few (their My Favourite Murder one is spot on Wink) but I believe U&V is the main target. I find it hard to listen to some true crime podcasts now because they lampoon them so well Grin

I need to go back and wade through the thread for recommendations but my current favourites are stuff they don’t want you to know, what if, last podcast on the left and behind the bastards. Mix of true crime and conspiracy.

I’m also a few episodes into the happy face killer (by a serial killers daughter) and the end of the world with josh Clark which is good for a bit of existential crisis.

@ChiefClerkDrumknott I've never heard of that, I'll check it out, thanks - sounds hilarious, I love it from the title alone Grin

I couldn't get along with My Favourite Murder either since you mention it - probably just a question of my not being the audience for it, but I listened to a few episodes but they just seemed to be vaguely chatting about the cases rather than really getting into them, which I found frustrating.

Myths and Legends is good, too. It's obviously about myths and legends from around the world, but retold in a story that's easy to follow, and each episode ends with a Creature Of The Week.

Fictional is another podcast from the same host, and I find it good, too. It's basically the same, but focuses on works of fiction. I particularly liked the recent telling of The Count Or Monte Cristo, which I've never managed to read through...

If you like politics:

Brexitcast - easy, fun, neutral and informative with lots of good guests
Coffee House Shots - chatty, easy short political daily podcast from the Spectator. Usually less than 15mins and they get into the issues quite quickly and don’t indulge lots of chat about themselves.
Talking Politics - a bit chunkier and more earnest than the two above. Usually about an hour long but great for getting into big political discussion. Ideal for when I am doing a big cooking session.
