Baby keeps loosing weight

Sorry for posting here I'm desperate for some advice.
Had my baby in august, at a week old she was put back into hospital due to jaundice and not feeding (took 10ml every 5 hour) finally got her feeding and we left 3 days later. Her weight slowly increased (7.6oz upon leaving hospital, 11 7ozlb two week ago) but then she has dropped a few oz, she was weighed literally 5 minutes ago and she's now 9lb 😭 I'm distraught, what is going on? We've got an emergency app with a paed tomorrow but don't know what to expect, I don't want her tube fed again 😭 can anybody offer some help?

I’m sorry, I haven’t been through that myself so hopefully someone else will come along. But some questions spring to mind - was she weighed at the health visitor? How is she feeding? Do you feel like she’s lost weight/do her clothes feel loose (i.e. could there be a problem with the scales?)

Drummingisfun · 05/11/2018 13:05

Is your baby breastfeeding or formula fed?

Nanny0gg · 05/11/2018 13:07

Are you breastfeeding? If so, how is your supply? What do the doctors say?

A relative was b/f her baby but she wasn't really producing any milk! It took the mum being taken ill and the baby having formula to sort it out.

redross · 05/11/2018 13:08

Hi thank you for your response! I know aibu probably isn't the best place this but I know the parenting boards can be quiet.
Well she was weighed at a baby clinic and they said 11lb something, it was hv who weighed last two times.
I'm not sure as when she was 11lb odd, sleepsuits that were 12.5 were tight on here but Admittedly she's wearing an up to 10lb sleepsuits and it's baggy😪
Her feeding is okay, she did have tongue tie but was snipped, 5oz bottles every 3 hrs but doesn't finish it all. Sleeps a good 2hr in the day time, does 4 hrs at night x

Sorry she's formula fed, I tried so hard to bf but the tongue tie was missed and by that point I was barely able to collect a ml in a syringe

Oh,OP,I'm so sorry, you must be really worried, sending virtual hugs.
First of all try to think if there is anything unusual in your baby behaviour i.e. peeing/pooping, pretty relaxed and alert? If those things are fine your baby is probably growing a bit slower. However, gaining 2lb in 2/3 months is quite worrying,it's probably some underlying causes so I'm glad you are dealing with it and have appointment booked.
Are you breastfeeding/formula feeding?
How is it going?

Emelene · 05/11/2018 13:12

I don't have any advice but just to say it sounds like you are doing a good job, and getting her seen to should help find any problems. Thanks

AssassinatedBeauty · 05/11/2018 13:13

She's lost 2 pounds in two weeks? Is that right? Despite feeding frequently and not seeming hungry?

It sounds like the emergency Paeds appointment is the right step in that case. No one here is going to be able to say what's going on with any accuracy. If she's lost that much weight in such a short time then tube feeding and investigations would seem like the right thing to do.

NoChocolateThanks · 05/11/2018 13:14

Was she weighed on the same scale?

jgjgjgjgjg · 05/11/2018 13:15

Have you weighed her yourself? It's possible that an error has been made. I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't have noticed your 11 lbs + baby shrinking down to 9 lbs.

redross · 05/11/2018 13:17

Yeah I had her weighed on the 18th, she was 11lb 7oz
Then she was weighed on 23rd by hv at my house she was 11 4
Then they came to weigh her today and do a 3 month review but she's down to 9lb.
When we were admitted back into hospital she was tube fed but it was horrific, she hated it and ended up spewing the tube out 😭 but it took another day for her to start taking 50ml, as before she was only having 10ml :/

Virtual hug.

patstar · 05/11/2018 13:19

What are her nappies like. Only mentioning this as my son was not gaining weight enough - did loadsss of nappies. Turned out he was allergic to the baby milk

AssassinatedBeauty · 05/11/2018 13:19

But losing that much weight in such a short time is a massive concern, and tube feeding might be the only way to get calories into her. It is unpleasant, but might be necessary.

DailyMailWankers · 05/11/2018 13:19

Some questions....

Is she keeping it down?
If no could be reflux.

Does any come out of her nose when she coughs/is sick?
If yes could be a submucous cleft palate.

Sounds weird but is it possible she is holding the bottle underneath instead of on top of her tongue when she is sucking?
My youngest DD did this and was exhausting herself sucking but not getting much Confused

If you put your finger in her mouth does she suck firmly?
Again could indicate a submucous cleft palate.

It is so scary when they're little Flowers. Just remember you are doing your best xx

Maybe start feeding every 2 hours until appt?

Scotinoz · 05/11/2018 13:21

Crumbs, what a rough time you're having 💐

Did they double check the 9lbs weight? It's just when my youngest was tiny, they weighed her at a few weeks old and she apparently lost a good few pounds. It transpired though, the Health Visitor had cocked up the scales though 🙄

redross · 05/11/2018 13:21

She's alert when awake, although she's only just started focusing on faces. Very smiley, babbles a lot.
Back in September she used to cry during and after feeding, sleeping 40min at a time so I took it upon myself to change the formula. Now she's like a different baby I don't understand it.
Although I had growth scans towards the end as she wasn't moving at all, the growth dipped a lot could this be along the same lines?I'm so worried that something more sinister is going on 😭
She doesn't feel remotely heavy to me so no I don't think I'd notice such a drop. I'm constantly picking up my 2yr and 4yr old so I don't particularly notice holding my youngest

OP posts:
redross · 05/11/2018 13:24

No she's barely ever sick, I'd say once a day she spits up a mouthful or two but on cow and gate it was a good 5 or 6 mouthfuls
Yes she sucks very hard, loves a dummy but can't keep hold of it.
Erm nappies she has 2 dirty ones a day, can sometimes be 3 but 9/10 2 a day, and a good few wet ones

OP posts:
Spam88 · 05/11/2018 13:29

Sounds like you're doing everything right OP, so I think you'll just have to wait it out for the appointment. Hopefully it will be quite quick, and take comfort in the knowledge that she's been referred to the right people to help sort it out.

Upanddownandroundagain · 05/11/2018 13:29

Wet nappies is always a good sign I think. But 2lb in 2 weeks is an absolutely massive amount, such a lot.... can you try and put her in seomthing that she’s worn before to see if you can judge whether she feels or looks smaller?

Alaria4 · 05/11/2018 13:31

Is it possible she could have trouble feeding because of the tongue tie?

I remember having a lot of trouble trying to BF my DS before and after he had tongue tie.

Could be an allergy to milk

Could be seeing as she had problems with growth during pregnancy that it is something to be looked in to further.

Not sure what else to say but good luck with your appointment and I hope you find some answers Flowers

NoChocolateThanks · 05/11/2018 13:32

booked

NoChocolateThanks · 05/11/2018 13:34

Bloody phone Angry
The reason why I'm asking if your baby was weighed on the same scale in the same place is because different scales may show different values if they are not properly calibrated.
I'm glad that you have an appointment booked for tomorrow and hopefully all will be well. Keep my fingers crossed for you.

redross · 05/11/2018 14:37

The tongue tie was snipped at 5 weeks, can't see that still being a problem?
Maybe the scales were not right but even so she's not far off her birth weight when she's sitting at 9lb 😪
Definitely don't think it's an allergy, She's so settled it's unreal. For example she was on cow and gate but during feeding she'd latch off and start crying, arch her back, be very sick, very grumpy, cry a lot. Now she takes 5oz, can fall asleep after 4oz, sleeps after feeding, can sleep for 2 hr maybe 3. Smiles, very happy. Doesn't cry during feeding definitely much more settled. I don't know what it is😪

BarbarianMum · 05/11/2018 14:43

It does sound as though there may be some underlying difficulty then. The paed appointment is a good move because the sooner they work out what's happening with her, the sooner they can help.

Flowers This must be very worrying for you. Please hang on to the fact that she is alert and happy - these are excellent signs.
