Baby keeps loosing weight

Sorry for posting here I'm desperate for some advice.
Had my baby in august, at a week old she was put back into hospital due to jaundice and not feeding (took 10ml every 5 hour) finally got her feeding and we left 3 days later. Her weight slowly increased (7.6oz upon leaving hospital, 11 7ozlb two week ago) but then she has dropped a few oz, she was weighed literally 5 minutes ago and she's now 9lb 😭 I'm distraught, what is going on? We've got an emergency app with a paed tomorrow but don't know what to expect, I don't want her tube fed again 😭 can anybody offer some help?

How big are you and her dad? Some babies are petite because their parents are.

Mine were 9lb and 10.4 born, but then they didn't grow much because they were never going to be that big. So they grew very slowly at first until they were back on the average centile.

Bananacakes · 06/11/2018 17:40

5kg is just over 11lbs? I’m similar position here. My 14 week old is FTT. She’s 9lb2oz or just over4kg. We are under a paed. She had jaundice.
She’s breastfed, had tongue tie snipped but it regrew. Has been having high energy top ups but they make little difference. She’s still in size 1 nappies and newborn baby grows.
Started ranitidine yesterday in case it’s silent reflux, and I want to try going dairy free and using nutramagin to top up. Hard work having a FTT baby so big hugs x

I wonder why they weighed her with vest and sleepsuit today?

You must be relieved that the 9lbs weigh in must have been wrong, and that she is much bigger than that.

Are they running any tests before Thursday?

peachgreen · 06/11/2018 17:51

I wouldn't worry too much about the clothes sizes OP, they can vary so wildly. My DD is 98th centile for height at 9 months but still fits into some of her 3-6 months stuff and 9-12 months drowns her. Hope the next weigh in goes well.

elliejjtiny · 06/11/2018 17:52

I had similar problems with my 10 year old. I said he wasn't moving much but the Drs said he was fine. He was born 8lb 10oz and was 14lb something at 12 months old. He was tested for all sorts of things but was eventually diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome.

mintyneb · 06/11/2018 17:59

What did they mean by no genetic factor? Seems an odd thing to say without any tests being done?

redross · 06/11/2018 19:57

They weighed her in her clothes I'm not sure why but it was stone age scale and not a baby one.
In my head I'm thinking the scale was wrong, but now it's just going to be investigated and I'm going to be on tenderhooks until Thursday. This is precisely why I said I didn't want a hv (back in August, But they demanded that somebody NEEDS to come out!) But I hate the weigh ins, wondering what centile is good, stressing over it. I'm much happier just to get on with it. I know in my heart there's nothing wrong with her, I've got children who had reflux, silent reflux, milk allergy, milk intolerance, colic and stuff so I know symptoms of things like that but she shows no signs, she's like the model baby. I'm so happy with how she's developing Sad

But if she's losing weight, which it seems she is, then that's an issue that needs investigating. It's not about health visitors and whether they're needed or not.

But, you do need accurate weigh ins, with a decent properly calibrated scale, weighed the same way each time. I'd be asking about how that's going to be achieved on your Thursday appointment.

AssassinatedBeauty · 06/11/2018 20:10

mintyneb the newborn screening test checks for cystic fibrosis markers, so presumably that was negative and what they are referring to.

Bananacakes · 06/11/2018 20:19

I too have had previous babies with cows milk intolerance, silent reflux, reflux and colic and I felt my baby was one of the most contented, but like others are saying the weight gain is an issue. Mine is under 0.4th centile. Whilst it’s a great sign my baby is smiling and chatting etc, her weight is something I agree needs to be addressed and I know how annoying it is, my last 2 babies only saw health visitors 3 times in total so the weekly monitoring is frustrating.

redross · 06/11/2018 20:46

I know I know it's not about the hv but my other dd was weighed every 4 days, it put a massive pressure on me (I was bf) I ended up with PND and struggling to bond and feed as I felt like everyone was saying my milk wasn't enough (like I said, She was 12lb at 12 weeks, 4 days later she was 12lb 5. Only weights I can remember) so there was never an issue but they made out to be one.
I hated the hv that came out when this dd was born, again weighing every 3 days and it was getting too much so I told her never to come back Blush (other problems too, She was rude as fuck) and now I feel like I'm going into a tailspin again, and it could even be their scales! They didn't explore that option. I'm to feed her 4oz every 2 hrs but she's allowed to go every 4hr at night Hmm she's been asleep since 6, like hell am I waking her! And forcing formula into her when she doesn't want it will just make her sick Confused
No, No further tests will be done until Thursday where I think they will have her at the Drs and weigh her the old fashion way

OP posts:
AssassinatedBeauty · 06/11/2018 20:55

If she's losing weight, then waking her to feed is worth a try, surely? If she really doesn't want it then she won't take it.

mintyneb · 06/11/2018 22:52

Assassinated, yes the heel prick test should pick up the vast majority of cases of CF but it's not foolproof.

Redross, Im afraid i don't really have any useful suggestions for you, it sounds like you are being put under immense strain though. I know what it's like to constantly be monitoring your childs weight and it's horrendous.

I really hope there is no serious underlying cause but it makes sense for the medics to check out all possibilities.

My DD is now 11 and has both cf and a severe milk allergy for what it's worth

ScottishMummy12 · 08/11/2018 10:11

Good luck today OP. I hope you get answers today.

ineedwine99 · 10/11/2018 20:34

Hi OP how are things?

redross · 11/11/2018 10:41

Oh I'd forgotten about this thread Blush she was weighed again Thursday, was 4.66kg, so come to the conclusion that the scales were wrong

OP posts:
HappySeven · 11/11/2018 11:40

This doesn't make sense. She was 5kg on Tuesday and 4.66kg on Thurs? She can't have lost 3/4 pound in two days, can she?

RedRoss · 12/11/2018 09:41

5kg was with clothes on though

OP posts:
Crunchymum · 12/11/2018 09:47

@redross

So how is this all being dealt with now?

Crunchymum · 12/11/2018 09:48

Are you on this thread under a (Not very original) namechange OP?

RedRoss and redross ???

RedRoss · 12/11/2018 12:17

Oops yes didn't realise my first username had no capitals Blush
Don't think they are going to anything now as I've not heard anything more

OP posts:
RedRoss · 13/11/2018 11:11

A hv phoned me and asked to come out and weigh my dd I said no so now she's going to be a case into social services 😭😭 can she do this?! I'm so worried now 😭

OP posts:
Spam88 · 13/11/2018 12:49

You're well within your rights to refuse a HV visit, but I think it's generally considered an automatic red flag. Given the previous concerns about your daughter's weight the HV obviously thinks it was worth flagging to social services. I wouldn't worry though OP, worst-case scenario someone from SS comes to visit you, at which point you can explain that she's been discharged by the hospital.

cestlavielife · 13/11/2018 14:22

There is no poi t having her weighed on lots of different machines. It needs to be consistent. Hv turnkng up with random scales wont be consistent . Explain you happy to have her weighed at same place every two weeks to keep.an eye.
But refusing hv when your baby may be v small maybe needs some input or assessment isn't a good idea.

AssassinatedBeauty · 13/11/2018 14:28

Did they say why they wanted to weigh her? Did they know that she had been to hospital and weighed there?
