AIBU?

To cut my own nails?

In conversation with a colleague I mentioned that my nails grow really quickly so I cut them short every couple of weeks. She gave me a bit of a head tilt, looked genuinely bemused and said "Do you cut them yourself?"

This is not that unusual is it? Since that conversation I was mulling it over and thinking about the huge number of nail bars in my quite small town and wondered if maybe it is odd and most people get them done by someone else

Quite happy to be the odd one out, I do them whilst listening to radio or something, it's free and they look fine to me:)

I mostly have mine done at the nail bar when they are removing and redoing the SNS, however I don't think it's at all odd to cut your own nails!

I cut mine - and my toe nails. It's a couple of minutes, if that!

I have always cut my own nails, and will continue to do so. It has never crossed my mind to get someone else to do it. I thought nail bars were for all that fake glue-on crap.

I always cut my own nails.

I've never been to a nail bar in my life.

Have you been in a nail bar? The smell is awful!!
I cut my own and (gasp) file them as well

She is the weird one and even weirder to be smug about it. If she ever does this again, remind her that many people who work in nail bars in the UK work under slavery like conditions. Many are under paid and in many cases their employer has taken their passport.

What kind of privilege level must this person be at to think it’s odd to cut your own nails?

Cleopatra probably thought wiping her own arse was odd, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the norm for everyone else...

Thanks all, was happy enough to feel a bit of a peasant but even better to find that it's pretty normal :)

I'd take a bet that the majority of women have never been in a nail bar.

If I'm on top of things I file my nails before they get too long rather than cutting them. Wouldn't want anyone else doing that to me tbh

I don’t ever do my own nails (painting) but that’s because I’m utterly cackhanded at doing it and they look like they’ve been attacked by a toddler. They rarely need cutting so they just get shaped when I go to a nail bar. I do do my own toenails though! I wouldn’t find it extraordinary that someone trimmed their own nails.

I watched a documentary once on the lifestyles of rich women from I think Saudia Arabia - there was a woman who had never washed her own hair.

YANBU at all. Since the age of 15 when my mum refused to let me go to a nail bar I have learnt how to fully manicure my own including gels. I'm a perfectionist and when I do "treat" myself to a set of "professional" nails I'm always disappointed.

Also my nails are so much stronger and healthier (always get nice comments about them) than any of my friends

Yanbu
But you have reminded me of a conversation I once had with a colleague when she revealed that she gets her (nice but ordinary looking) hair blow dried at a salon three times a week.

That was the day I realised we have sod all in common.

I've never really been into to twatting around with my nails so yes cut them myself.

I actually cannot stand having them filed...it makes me cringe so the whole nail bar thing is out to me

I cut and file my own nails, do my own pedicures, wax my upper lip, pluck and shape my own eyebrows and wipe my own arse. You are definitely no the odd one out Op.

Another one who's never been in a nail-bar or had a manicure. I cut mine very short with clippers very couple of weeks or so. Can't stand my nails long - I like to be able to use my fingers without hindrance Grin.

I thought the only people who didn't cut their own toenails were the very elderly who can no longer reach their feet. I can understand people not cutting their own fingernails if they're regularly having their nails done, but that's not something I ever do because my everyday life isn't conducive to having nicely painted nails.

Does anyone NOT cut their own nails? I may very occassionally go to a nail bar but yes, generally, we all do our own in this household!

Never been to nail bar. Thought they were for false nails and glue on things.
