To cut my own nails?

In conversation with a colleague I mentioned that my nails grow really quickly so I cut them short every couple of weeks. She gave me a bit of a head tilt, looked genuinely bemused and said "Do you cut them yourself?"

This is not that unusual is it? Since that conversation I was mulling it over and thinking about the huge number of nail bars in my quite small town and wondered if maybe it is odd and most people get them done by someone else

Quite happy to be the odd one out, I do them whilst listening to radio or something, it's free and they look fine to me:)

I do my own nails and never been to a nail bar. I wanted to give acrylics ago but didn't want to go and get it done so I've learnt how to do it myself (to an acceptable standard now).

You're perfectly normal to cut your own nails.

YANBU OP, she is the weird one for thinking that people don't cut their own nails. What a strange world she must live in.

Everyone I know cuts their own nails as far as I'm aware !

BigDamnHero · 03/11/2018 16:35

Apart from when I was a child and my parents cut my nails, nobody else has ever cut them except me.

It hadn't occurred to me that anyone wouldn't cut their own nails until this thread, actually.

I cut my own fringe today. Is that weird.

SilentIsla · 03/11/2018 16:39

If course normal people cut their own nails!
Nail bars look a bit tacky to me.

I do my own! After having my nails ruined by shellac a few years ago I will never go back to a salon again.

I watch a YouTube video on how to shape them then off I go.

I also have my own gel kit which I use every now and again, holidays and special occasions. Rest of the time I just cut/file and normal nail varnish them. I do get lots of compliments on them so I guess I’m not that bad at doing them, they are also quite long.

She’d definitely the odd one out.

Most people cut their own nails. What a funny thing to say!

anniehm · 03/11/2018 16:42

Frequent manicures are a very recent thing, most if not all the nail bars here are under 10 years old (we've lived here 10 years). I have fake nails so I go every 3 weeks, high maintenance! Most people cut their own if they are natural I think you will find. (Not that I'm giving up my lovely long nails now!)

PinguDance · 03/11/2018 16:43

lol that’s a hilarious reaction from her . I’ve just cut mine after they got as long as I could bear and it feels amazing. Also, I noticed when they were long that they were SO DIRTY, I don’t know how people with acrylics keep them clean.

SparkyBlue · 03/11/2018 16:45

Most people cut and look after their own nails. I am the same OP mine grow really quickly so I am always having to cut and file mine. Your colleague sounds like a right pain in the arse.

Picklypickles · 03/11/2018 16:46

I've been to a nail bar once to get my nails done for a wedding where I was a bridesmaid. It was a very disappointing experience and I'm still annoyed that I paid for someone to do a worse job than I could have done myself at home drunk in the dark.

TipseyTorvey · 03/11/2018 16:47

Pre DC when I was loaded and had hardly any housework I used to have mine done regularly. Two DC later and with a soapy rag permanently in one hand I have long given up and chop mine down to the most practical short length possible. I don't even bother painting them for a night out these days in case I don't get a chance to remove it before work on the monday when it is all chipped by the cleaning again. I suppose people in different life stages have different priorities is all.

BackforGood · 03/11/2018 17:14

Never been to nail bar. Thought they were for false nails and glue on things.

Me too.

What kind of planet does your colleague live on that she thinks everyone gets their nails done everytime they need a trim Confused

Popc0rn · 03/11/2018 18:05

I don't cut my finger nails at all anymore - I just file them every week or so, and they are much stronger now. Also cut my own hair, thank God for YouTube!

MadisonAvenue · 03/11/2018 18:11

I always do my own, I've got to 49 without ever having a professional manicure and have never been in a nail bar.

Lilyhatesjaz · 03/11/2018 18:37

I am aware that's alfull
