To believe that fireworks shouldn’t be available to the general public?

Fireworks at this time of night!!!

I’m partial to a sparkler don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t agree with fireworks being readily available for joe public. Particularly when people let them off after 11pm!

I’m not saying get rid of them all together but make it stricter so they’re only let off in safe environments by people who’ve had adequate training who then clean everything up and it’s all done and dusted before 11pm.

Am I getting old??

Witchend I imagine that is why the government haven't banned the public sale of fireworks.

They will be dangerous in the wrong hands, but so will lots of things.

We have problems in this country with knife crime, obesity, alcohol, drugs, gambling , car accidents I could go on.

The government can't deal with everything at once and they just have bigger stuff to deal with.

Dare I say it but there are probably be more injuries and fatalities involving animals than there are fireworks.

jasjas1973 · 04/11/2018 23:31

A ban would mean more organised displays, so would it solve the issues? especially as they tend to use much bigger fireworks.

The National fireworks champs held in Plymouth is over 3 days (in august) and is akin to a war! plus all the other displays in Nov and NY's eve.

Other than better enforcement of sales and use, i don't know what the answer is for pet owners, is it possible they pick up on their owners worries?
When we had working terriers, they didn't give a shit around November and neither did we.

Aside, i wish dog owners would have such concern over the amount of shit their dogs leave on the Tamar trails and river bank footpaths, its a beautiful and special area very much un-spoilt otherwise.

Maybe we should ban dogs?

Gingerlover2 · 04/11/2018 23:32

Once again Ruffina has made claims she can not back up. NO one is trying to restrict others freedoms, all we ask is for there to be a more sensible attitude to sales, who to, how long and more emphasis on public, managed displays.

The hyperbole she displays, the aggression towards dog owners has nothing to do with fireworks and the effects they have on not just dogs but a whole list of people and animals it causes stress to, but her own issues with dogs. Several dogs, cats and horses have already died this weekend and it's not even Bonfire night yet, never mind all the other incidents.

Then suggesting we are all ridiculous because we treat our pets with love and respect, claiming they have no emotions which is completely wrong but then as she seems to make things up as she goes along I am not surprised.

Most dog owners are responsible and cause very little trouble if any over their pets lifetime, of course there are anomalies and I am sure she could bring up a few from google but then I could counteract that with children who get their hands on fireworks thanks to irresponsible parents and the horrific crimes they commit such as throwing a lit firework in to the face of a blind woman and her dog.

But unlike her, I don't make sweeping, dishonest generalisations and paint everyone with the same brush

Hanski444 · 04/11/2018 23:32

Someone’s looking for a fight😵. We all know fireworks are gonna be used this time of year. Prepare occordingly. White noise is great or ear plugs.

Shitlandpony · 04/11/2018 23:32

We are urging everyone to learn basic first aid skills ahead of Bonfire Night as shocking statistics reveal a third of parents and grandparents have witnessed an injury during Bonfire night celebrations and 4,506 people visited A&E from 2014-2015 for treatment of a fireworks-related injury.* This is an increase of 111% from the 2,141 firework-related injuries reported in 2009-10.*

The most common injuries that St John Ambulance volunteers are required to treat at Bonfire Night gatherings are burns, debris in the eye from bonfires and fireworks and smoke inhalation

Shitlandpony · 04/11/2018 23:35

Well you do dare say it because you have been trying to de rail the thread from
the minute you spotted it in active.
Just go and start a separate dog hating thread in AIBU.

You can talk about what a wonderful addition you are to the world too and your zero impact on anyone else.

LostontheWestway · 04/11/2018 23:36

I'll just leave this here for the enlightened posters on this thread that think they're better because they're a Homo sapiens.

Gingerlover2 · 04/11/2018 23:37

Oh no, facts, a stake in the heart of the people who just make it up as they go along Grin

Uh?? 🤔 MN at its best... 🙄

What an earth has that got to do with fireworks?

There are lots of smug dog owners on twitter proclaiming that their excellent training means that their pets are just fine.

These are not the owners that would rescue and rehabilitate dogs or cats who have been badly treated or exposed to trauma and cruelty. I let them carry on thinking it’s all their marvellous training and desensitisation.

jasjas1973 · 04/11/2018 23:40

63000 people visit AE departments every single day, over 23 million in 2016.
250,000 people go to AE because of dog bites each year.

LostontheWestway · 04/11/2018 23:41

Jasjas and that has what to do with restricting the sale of fireworks?

jasjas1973 · 04/11/2018 23:41

Nothing but you bought in the numbers of people going to AE because of F/w injuries... nothing is in isolation.

LostontheWestway · 04/11/2018 23:42

Nothing.

Good. Glad we agree.

Shitlandpony · 04/11/2018 23:42

I wonder if the dog haters would turn down a guide dog or an assistance dog should they need one?

Absolute weirdos who have managed to de rail what was a really supportive thread.

My autistic dd is saved by our dogs, it gives her a reason to live.

Gingerlover2 · 04/11/2018 23:43

Dogs Trust take on it

LostontheWestway · 04/11/2018 23:46

Yes and the seizure alert dogs.

Dogs that sniff out bombs or cancer or drugs.

Dogs that catch criminals or provide company to lonely elderly people.

Dogs that rescue people on mountains or provide therapy to those that struggle to interact with humans.

Dogs that are so excited to see their family everyday when they come home that it brightens even the worst day.

Dogs that are highly emotionally intelligent and try to cheer you up if you're upset.

Yeah... just like a chicken....

Shitlandpony · 04/11/2018 23:47

If you advance search the dog haters, some of them really have some serious issues, habitually posting their angry rants on lots of threads. No wonder the other troll namechanged.

I am off to bed now, the fireworks have stopped, got my dogs with me Halo

Barryallen · 04/11/2018 23:48

I totally agree. We now live in the USA and the state we live in doesn’t allow the general public to buy any fireworks! Only licensed displays are allowed and they aren’t in private yards or neighborhoods so no chance of our pets being frightened silly. I do know a few people who drive the miles across to the next state to buy sparklers but truly it’s a lot of effort and the chances of the local police turning up are fairly high!

Shitlandpony · 04/11/2018 23:49

Bloody dogs eh?

To believe that fireworks shouldn’t be available to the general public?
FatNoMorePat · 04/11/2018 23:49

@PennyArcade your comment made me laugh! 😂

I can’t believe I’m having to clarify I don’t enjoy stepping in dog poo on a thread I’ve made about the sale of fireworks being restricted

Lost

Gandhi surrounded himself with very young female ‘companions’ and took a strange interest in their bowel movements. He also wrote to Hitler in that, “...we have no doubt about your bravery or devotion to your fatherland, nor do we believe that you are the monster described by your opponents.”

But then nice Mr H was himself a devout animal lover.

Gingerlover2 · 04/11/2018 23:54

LOL, so now we are being compared to Hitler because he was a dog lover.

Leave it to MN to bring out the most idiotic and deranged people on the internet

LostontheWestway · 04/11/2018 23:54

Ruffian he still sounds nicer than you.

Ruffina · 04/11/2018 23:55

You’re not very bright are you, Ginger?
