To consider using the baby box as a bed

My three month old has nearly grown out of his moses basket but we don't want to put him in his cot in his room until at least 6 months old. We have a sleepyhead, but it's not recommended for night sleep. We also have a travel cot that could fit in the room if we moved some furniture, but I feel it is a bit roomy a sleeping space straight from the moses basket. I'm debating placing the baby box in the middle of our bed (superking) for now. Has anyone else done this? Would you recommend it?

[For anyone outside of Scotland, this is a big box of baby goodies the government sends you. The box comes with a mattress and a sheet and is a safe sleeping space. (Although some newspaper reports debate this.)]

That's what it's for, they've used them in Finland for decades without issue so I'd go for it.

Sleepyheads are designed for overnight sleeps, not sure what you mean about them not being recommended?

There was a research report just last week saying the baby boxes are not necessarily safe to sleep in and should only be used if there’s no other option available, can’t google right now but if you search you should be able to find it.

scaredofthecity · 01/11/2018 17:15

I thought that was the point of them! I'm not sure I'd put it on the bed though, can you have it on the floor beside you?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 01/11/2018 17:20

They are not recommended for use overnight, only daytime naps. Even if you use it for daytime naps having it on the bed seems a pretty dangerous idea.

The sleepyhead baby pod is suitable for use overnight. I don't understand why you would think a box on the bed would be safer then using the sleepyhead?

Poodles1980 · 01/11/2018 17:20

My newborn sleeps in a full size cot so can’t see why the travel cot would be weird. You can get better mattresses for them

survivalmode · 01/11/2018 17:21

At that age a Sleepyhead would surely be more sensible than a box places on a bed?!

We had a cot thingje that went on the bed like that. Between the grownups' pillows so as to be safe. DD hated it and the dog ended up using it tbh but in principle it sounds all right.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 01/11/2018 17:25

If you can do so safely why not just co-sleep? I used to when dh was working away, we didn't when he was at home as he's a very deep sleeper & felt very uncomfortable with the idea (which is reasonable).

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:25

Well the baby box is for up to 3 or 4 months so if your DC has outgrown their noses basket it is unlikely the box is still suitable.

Absolutely no to putting the box on the bed - it is supposed to be on the floor or in a cot

.

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:26

Why is the box ok for naps but not nights

It is absolutely fine for nights.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 01/11/2018 17:28

That was what I thought siakcaci but didn't actually write Hmm.

UrsulaPandress · 01/11/2018 17:28

You get a box for your baby?

In Scotland?

Littlechocola · 01/11/2018 17:29

Put the Moses basket in the travel cot until the baby outgrows the basket and it will help them get used to something more roomy.

SoyDora · 01/11/2018 17:30

I thought that was basically the point of the baby box?
Why on the bed though? Surely the floor would be safer?

mrsmacaw · 01/11/2018 17:30

This is the advice from the Lullaby Trust:

www.lullabytrust.org.uk/are-baby-boxes-safe-to-sleep-baby/

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:30

OP said the baby HAS outgrown the noses basket, hence looking for a sleeping solution.

Letsgetreadytorumba · 01/11/2018 17:31

There’s a bit of debate about this at the moment - I thought they’d now decided it wasn’t a good long term solution? But they keep changing their minds...

Smurf123 · 01/11/2018 17:32

My son went straight from the moses basket to the travel cot at 4 months old.. Travel cot is in our room

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 01/11/2018 17:32

They are suitable for naps as you are presumed to be watching your child when they nap but that is not possible when you are yourself asleep at night.

The Lullaby Trust also issues warnings over there use as they do not have to comply to any safety standards unlike cots or moses baskets.

Chrystal1982 · 01/11/2018 17:32

I got a baby box as a gift from family (not in Scotland so they bought it online) we used it from day 1 at night placed in the cotbed until ds got too big for it, loved it! More spacious than a Moses basket (wider) which I refused to get this time round and used a pram downstairs in the day instead.

DowntonCrabby · 01/11/2018 17:34

Our eldest slept in a travel cot from 3-18 months, we just got a better mattress for it.

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:35

The gov website directs to this...

www.parentclub.scot/baby-box

Which says they are safe for overnights.

Either way, if the baby has outgrown a moses basket they have probably outgrown the box as well.

I don't see what's wrong with your travel cot?
