To consider using the baby box as a bed

My three month old has nearly grown out of his moses basket but we don't want to put him in his cot in his room until at least 6 months old. We have a sleepyhead, but it's not recommended for night sleep. We also have a travel cot that could fit in the room if we moved some furniture, but I feel it is a bit roomy a sleeping space straight from the moses basket. I'm debating placing the baby box in the middle of our bed (superking) for now. Has anyone else done this? Would you recommend it?

[For anyone outside of Scotland, this is a big box of baby goodies the government sends you. The box comes with a mattress and a sheet and is a safe sleeping space. (Although some newspaper reports debate this.)]

Sanitary towels are breathable, but I wouldn't sleep with one stuck to my face.

It's your choice to put your baby to sleep wherever you like. I have mine in my bed so I'm totally understanding that people go against safety guidelines for the sake of better sleep. I just don't like this idea that the sleepyhead is totally safe - it's not and it's not approved either. Even the disclaimers are misleading because they include that baby's sleep space must be near the parent's sleep space - indicating that the product is for use while the parents sleep, but it's not. "Unsupervised" includes while the parents are sleeping.

I don't think anybody has said that the baby boxes pose some big risk, more that they are unregulated and untested, and while the Scottish one and Finnish ones are produced by government agencies rather than for profit, so the incentive is safety rather than other factors, there are other boxes which are produced and handed out in return either for a monetary contribution, advertising revenue, or consumer data.

I used the sleepyhead-couldn't have done without it

MaryShelley1818 · 01/11/2018 20:05

Sleepyhead is safe for overnight ‘supervised’ sleeping - baby must be in the same room as you as per guidelines for first 6mths.
Even Lullaby Trust said there has not been a single incident linked to their use.
DS has used a Sleepyhead since 3wks old. He’s now 11mths.

babycatcher411 · 01/11/2018 20:17

Supervised means regular checking, so yes, in theory you could use it overnight... if you’re not asleep and can check your baby regularly

Whilst there may be no incidents linked in the UK there are at least 12 in the US (identified as of 2017- possibly more since)

Babies start to roll over from about 3 months. Could it topple over?

looneymoons · 01/11/2018 20:25

Was that with the actual Sleepyheads or with sleep positioners?!

MaryShelley1818 · 01/11/2018 20:26

I believe those deaths were actually linked to sleep positioners and wedges - NOT the Sleepyhead.
Following that report some retailers (incl. John Lewis) carried out extensive studies and looked at the report and restocked them.

looneymoons · 01/11/2018 20:26

That question's for babycatcher411

looneymoons · 01/11/2018 20:26

Sorry crossed post there 😳

MaryShelley1818 · 01/11/2018 20:27

@looneymoons the 2017 report did not identify Sleepyhead as being linked.
It was sleep positioners which are completely different.

looneymoons · 01/11/2018 20:28

I thought so too

MaryShelley1818 · 01/11/2018 20:28

Unless we’re talking about completely different reports but I literally read hundreds of articles/reports before purchasing and never saw that.

looneymoons · 01/11/2018 20:30

No I'm agreeing with you - no reports on deaths linked to Sleepyheads

Lana1234 · 01/11/2018 20:30

I used the baby box for my DS when he was smaller to sleep in a couple times (I got two free from doing a study) when I was cleaning out the Moses basket. I had no problems with it whatsoever. Preferred the Moses and now he’s in a cot but it was fine for temp use

Lana1234 · 01/11/2018 20:30

They make great storage boxes after use too 😁

BackInRed · 01/11/2018 20:31

You can get next2me cots usually for £60 through gumtree. Just buy a new mattress, not just hygiene but also because the one that comes with it blows.

MaryShelley1818 · 01/11/2018 20:32

@looneymoons yep! I thought we were agreeing :)

I use the sleepyhead sometimes during the day but I worry at night that I might forget that DS is sleeping next to me in it and roll over or pull the duvet up. I don't worry about that when we are co-sleeping as he sleeps with his head on my arm so I'm always aware he is there.

When did sleeping get so complicated! I'm pretty sure cave mamas didn't have to worry about it. Just sabretooth tigers instead...

I got mine from a you+ shop I just had to do an online quiz

TurkeyBear · 02/11/2018 09:07

They're crap tbh OP. Also not suitable for babies who can roll even slightly or wriggle about a lot as the sides aren't breathable. No blankets, sleep bag only, etc etc

They're just a bit shit though. Get a travel cot. Or an angel care movement monitor for the cot.
