To consider using the baby box as a bed

My three month old has nearly grown out of his moses basket but we don't want to put him in his cot in his room until at least 6 months old. We have a sleepyhead, but it's not recommended for night sleep. We also have a travel cot that could fit in the room if we moved some furniture, but I feel it is a bit roomy a sleeping space straight from the moses basket. I'm debating placing the baby box in the middle of our bed (superking) for now. Has anyone else done this? Would you recommend it?

[For anyone outside of Scotland, this is a big box of baby goodies the government sends you. The box comes with a mattress and a sheet and is a safe sleeping space. (Although some newspaper reports debate this.)]

@WerewolfNumber1 they are only recommend for supervised sleep

LokiBear · 01/11/2018 17:36

My dd slept in her sleepyhead until 6 months. I put it in her crib and, if we co-slept, she slept in that with me next to her.

rwalker · 01/11/2018 17:36

These were on radio 2 phone in other day and not recomendded for permanent use. The impression was they are a last resort and better than nothing.Even the people who made/send them said this

Allthewaves · 01/11/2018 17:37

Ours slept better in travel cot as weren't bashing arms off sides

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:38

They do actually meet the European safety standard

Not recommended for night sleeping? People do realise SIDS can happen during the day too?

Anyway, my DS outgrew his Moses basket at 4 months old & we put him straight into his cot. We also have an angel care monitor with a sensor pad just for peace of mind. He preferred the extra space (although I realise not all babies would).

BlueBug45 · 01/11/2018 17:41

A baby box (you can get them in the rest of the UK from baby box university ) is longer and wider than my moses basket.

However baby boxes aren't recommended as a place to sleep in once your baby can pull themselves up.

Also they should be placed on a stable flat surface so not in a bed.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 01/11/2018 17:42

I stand corrected that it is meets the safety guidelines, nevertheless it doesn't change the fact it should only be used for naps even their own website states that.

provides a comfortable and safe place to pop the little one down for a nap.

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:43

They don't say only naps?

We have one in our nursery and I was surprised how large it was. Definitely bigger than most moses baskets I've seen.

Tagged wrong person!
@siakcaci op said ‘has nearly grown out of his Moses basket’.

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 17:53

I know? The box suits up to 3-4 months.

At 3 months this baby is very large to have outgrown a noses basket, therefore I was guessing they would be in the range of babies that outgrow the box first.

Littlechocola · 01/11/2018 17:55

Sorry, I misunderstood Flowers

Mesmeri · 01/11/2018 17:56

Travel cot is fine! We used ours from birth til around 2 years with 3 kids. Like a PP, we just got a proper mattress for it. Safe, comfy, light to move and doesn't take up an unnecessary amount of space.

anniehm · 01/11/2018 17:57

If they have outgrown the Moses basket then the cot in their own room is better. Both of mine slept in their carry cot until past 6 months though, are you sure they have outgrown?

Brainfogmcfogface · 01/11/2018 17:57

I was advised against sleepyheads when I asked the midwife (and the lullaby trust has this advice) FWIW I co slept, but it was just me and baby.

They state only for naps on the original outline for the purpose of the box.

After having a quick look at the safety guidelines it professes to meet I am once again sceptical. The BSI itself says it does not meet the standard accreditation as this does not relate to cardboard boxes it only relates to furniture

Unicyclethief · 01/11/2018 18:03

Why the box in your bed? Surely just one or the other?

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 18:05

As if that wasn't enough, the box has also been developed so that it can in fact be used as a place for new-borns to sleep. It comes lined with a mattress, mattress protector and a fitted sheet and provides a comfortable and safe place to pop the little one down for a nap

Im not sure that means ONLY naps. The use of the word nap could been interpreted to mean sleep, given that the first sentence says it is a place for newborns to sleep. There is nothing specific about not overnighting.

BertramKibbler · 01/11/2018 18:05

My son went straight into the travel cot when he was too big for his Moses basket. We bought a comfier mattress and he was in it until 12 months.

I wouldn’t leave a child to sleep in a sleepyhead overnight, they don’t meet the safe sleep guidelines

BertieBotts · 01/11/2018 18:06

I should think a box with mattress would be safer than the sleepyhead considering a box is a firm, flat surface with no rips or tears.

There is some question about whether solid sides are really OK but then hospital cots have those, don't they? There is a concern about whether being able to see the baby is important, though.

I don't trust sleepyheads at all, you wouldn't put your baby to sleep on any other pillow so why is one with a friendly cosy name different? "Breathable" isn't a regulated term meaning it is purely marketing speak and not subject to any testing at all.

OP I would use the travel cot or co-sleep but the box would be better than the sleepyhead.

jaseyraex · 01/11/2018 18:12

That's what it's for. Although I think it's recommended to be put on the floor or in the cot, something firm rather than your bed. I can't imagine you'll get much use out of it though if baby has outgrown the moses, the box isn't much bigger.

This is a government initiative btw, not just a random box you buy online.
