To consider using the baby box as a bed

My three month old has nearly grown out of his moses basket but we don't want to put him in his cot in his room until at least 6 months old. We have a sleepyhead, but it's not recommended for night sleep. We also have a travel cot that could fit in the room if we moved some furniture, but I feel it is a bit roomy a sleeping space straight from the moses basket. I'm debating placing the baby box in the middle of our bed (superking) for now. Has anyone else done this? Would you recommend it?

[For anyone outside of Scotland, this is a big box of baby goodies the government sends you. The box comes with a mattress and a sheet and is a safe sleeping space. (Although some newspaper reports debate this.)]

OK, so box on the bed is a bad idea. Too many broken nights does not a thinker make. The box looks bigger than the moses basket, but TBH I haven't actually checked that it is. My reticence to use the travel cot was because it has mesh sides so feels 'open'. I like the idea of using the moses basket inside it at first to acclimatise DS. We do co-sleep from first wake until the morning, and DS sleeps in sling during the day, so this is just for evening from 7pm to 1am.

In regards to the sleepyhead, being breathable is regulated. There are air flow and permeability standards when it comes to pillows for use in cots or prams

An aside, the contents of the box are fantastic. I really hope they introduce it in the rest of the UK. It is such a massive help for anyone struggling.

It's amazing. I've just sent off for ours and am really excited about it arriving!

You could try the travel cot. We moved DD from the carrycot thing to a cot bed at around two or three months and she didn't bat an eyelid. We thought she'd have big trouble adjusting.

Natsku · 01/11/2018 18:33

Both my babies slept in their baby box (I'm in Finland) but on the floor (I see you realise now that on the bed is not a good idea!), my first was small and she fit in it until she was 6 months old but my second was average size and I had to move him out at 3.5 months so you might not have much time to sleep in it before he outgrows and then has to get used to another bed so might be better to go with something bigger like the travel cot straight away.

The Scottish box mattress is the correct mattress standard can't say for other sources. As long as baby fits and it's on a firm surface then it can be used overnight.

The disputes come in relation to research not an increase in SIDS from parents using the box.

I also think that some of the disagreement comes due to UK government not wanting to pay and the lullaby trust also having corporate partners including a mosses basket company and a cot company......

babycatcher411 · 01/11/2018 18:39

Professionally speaking, the sleepyhead is absolutely NOT safe for unsupervised sleeps. A baby should sleep on a firm flat mattress until a year of age.
An empty cot is a safe cot. No teddies, pillows quilts, loose fitting sheets/blankets, bumpers or mobiles in the cot (this inc any form/brand of sleepyhead).

Regarding solid sides- flat plastics or wood are safe because a baby cannot press their face into it completely and therefore cannot block their airways with it.

WerewolfNumber1 · 01/11/2018 18:46

@frostywalkshotchocolate1 -“supervised sleeping” means that the parent is checking up or monitoring on the baby, eg by being in the same room or having a baby monitor. There’s no expectation the parents sits there watching the baby sleeps. This is covered in FAQs on the sleepyhead website.

HidingFromMyKids · 01/11/2018 18:51

The sleepyhead consistently says not suitable for unsupervised sleeping.
What's the difference between that and the baby box.
People seem to think the expensive brand means it's fine but not the government initiative box. Is it the marketing?

There was a study recently that found that those baby boxes aren't evidence based safety wise and therefore should only be used if there's no safe alternative.

WerewolfNumber1 · 01/11/2018 18:53

The sleepyhead website says it can be used for overnight sleeps - see the FAQs here: sleepyheadofsweden.com/faq/

MyKingdomForBrie · 01/11/2018 18:53

The sleepyhead isn't a pillow, it's a mattress. The wadding enclosed in the sides and the material itself are all breathable.

HildaZelda · 01/11/2018 18:53

Can you put the baby box into the cot?

OhEctoplasmOnIt · 01/11/2018 18:55

Sorry not a study, an article discussing in the BMJ.

DiaryofWimpyMum · 01/11/2018 18:56

I used a travel cot for DS2 he used to bang his head off the end of the cot bed so we moved him into the travel cot.

Soubriquet · 01/11/2018 18:58

My dd was in her Moses basket until she was 9 months old Grin

We then moved her to her cot, but when my monitor broke (I’m deaf so needed a special one) I had her in her travel cot in my room but I put a comfier mattress in it.

What about the next2me crib? Would that be any good?

barneymcgroo · 01/11/2018 18:58

I had baby box on a trunk (and wedged so it couldn't move) next to the bed. I took a side off it so it basically became the cheapskate's version of a next to me. Now have sleepyhead in the cot with the side off. He spends approx 10 mins in there, then the second I roll over to go to sleep, he wakes up. We cosleep the rest of the night

None of these things actually make him sleep, you understand...

wewillrememberthem · 01/11/2018 19:00

Put the Moses bracket in the travel cot now and then when outgrown basket baby is already used to travel cot.

RunningFeisty · 01/11/2018 19:08

I got a box as well and I'm in west Midlands.. although the box came without a lid because a few people had put the lid on whilst a baby was in it (was hoping to use mine as a storage box after baby grew out of it) and the handles taped over as some people had carried their boxes whilst baby was in them. It was nice enough for popping baby into and was secure enough imo. I would do it.

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 19:16

running. Where did you get it?

babycatcher411 · 01/11/2018 19:20

A sleepyhead is absolutely not a mattress. A mattress is a flat surface, which a sleepyhead most definitely is not.
The material may be breathable in the sense that it allows for better air flow and temperature regulation than some materials, but it’s raised sides pose a risk for suffocation.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 01/11/2018 19:21

I had a baby box and it was actually the same length as the moses basket (looked bigger though)

I'd put in the cot while the baby''s littleand before the sleep regressions hit as the older they are, the harder sleeping habits are to break

CaffeineBomb · 01/11/2018 19:34

Can your baby roll over? If so then I would think that it is a risk that the box could topple?

HereForTheLineEyes · 01/11/2018 19:52

New mums in Scotland get given a box full of goodies that also doubles as a little cot?!?! Shock

I googled and they look great!
