To be surprised how painful this is?

Had 2 upper front teeth extracted yesterday at 2.30. It went well and was over really quickly, minimal bleeding. They were root extractions but he didn't have any problems.

I have been surprised that I am still in a fair amount of pain. Not screaming out pain but enough to make me miserable! It was worse last night but hasn't improved much today and the salt water rinses feel nice at the time but seem to make the extraction sites hurt more after :-( I've got quite a lot of swelling (I can feel it but not see it) in my cheek aswell. It's very tender and feels a lot like it did when I had the infection there before extraction.

I'm guessing this is all normal? It's too early to have dry socket I think? And that would be agony I've heard.

I have read people feel fine after extractions and don't even need painkillers

My dry socket began like that I'm sorry to say

cigarettesandcoffee · 31/10/2018 20:43

Did you actually have an appointment at 230 😂

In all seriousness though I had on out towards the front and this seems fairly consistent with how mine was

BumsexAtTheBingo · 31/10/2018 20:44

Tooth extractions so really hurt for a few days I find them not at all. I had a back tooth removed the day before a camping weekend and the pain really made me miserable but it was fine a day or so after.
Keep rinsing and taking pain killers.

beefchowmein · 31/10/2018 20:46

2.30 😂

Yonijust · 31/10/2018 20:47

2.30 Grint

What pain relief/anti inflammatories are you on?

I would be on over the counter co-codamol & ibroprufen every 6 hours, in fact I would probably alternate them every few hours (not exceeding the maximun dose in 24 hours)

Hidillyho · 31/10/2018 20:48

I just got that 😂

LittleRen · 31/10/2018 20:48

I was wondering why you were all commenting on 2.30 but then the penny dropped Grin

willowbranch · 31/10/2018 20:49

 14:30 ?

I am just taking ibuprofen- maybe i am not dosed up enough...just checking if people thought a fair amount of pain was standard the day after maybe tomorrow will be a bit better

I would say it's quite normal. I had 4 teeth in total taken out for braces when I was around 13 and it was a good few days of pain each time (thy did 2 1 week then 2 the next week)
Definitely not pleasant. Try to dose up on painkillers and keep calm; lots of feeling sorry for yourself and I'm sure it will pass soon! I'd say by Friday if you're still really suffering then a quick call/trip to dentist might be worth it?

Good luck!

I am monitoring for dry socket but think it's a bit soon and the pain isn't excruciating yet (hopefully it doesn't get there!)

Ok I'm going to admit this as it might help explain the level of pain.

I have only had one 200mg ibuprofen tablet this evening, nothing today. As I don't like taking painkillers, but I'm guessing I need to take them pretty consistently for pain relief for a few days 🙈 sorry to be an idiot.

OP posts:
Yonijust · 31/10/2018 20:58

Paramol is £6.20
Paracetamol 500 mg, Dihydrocodeine Tartrate 7.46 mg.

Co-Codamol is £2.00
Paracetamol 500mg
Codeine 8mg.

Spend your £4.20 saving on a bottle of wine tube of Dental Anbesol that contains lidocaine.

You could pop that around the gum in a few days?

9unctured6icycle · 31/10/2018 21:09

I was surprised how long the discomfort went on after an extraction. Have you used ice on it? Co-codamol didn't really do much more than take the edge off, but ice was brilliant. If I woke up early in pain I'd take some pain relief, bring an ice pack up to bed in a tea towel and fall asleep with it on my face.
Sorry to say it was pretty uncomfortable for about a week I think. :(
Can you ring your dentist in the morning and ask what they think? I did that after a few days and they reassured me that it all sounded normal.
