To be surprised how painful this is?

Had 2 upper front teeth extracted yesterday at 2.30. It went well and was over really quickly, minimal bleeding. They were root extractions but he didn't have any problems.

I have been surprised that I am still in a fair amount of pain. Not screaming out pain but enough to make me miserable! It was worse last night but hasn't improved much today and the salt water rinses feel nice at the time but seem to make the extraction sites hurt more after :-( I've got quite a lot of swelling (I can feel it but not see it) in my cheek aswell. It's very tender and feels a lot like it did when I had the infection there before extraction.

I'm guessing this is all normal? It's too early to have dry socket I think? And that would be agony I've heard.

I have read people feel fine after extractions and don't even need painkillers

The important thing to remember about pain relief is that they are anti-inflammatory.

Inflammation is one of the major causes of pain, but unmanaged inflammation is also linked to infection and wound breakdown.

There is no benifits to being a martyr and not taking pain relief. It is prescribed for many good reasons.

@Haint Totally agree about paracetamol. I would have poo-pooed it previously and said it wasn't strong enough for me etc but it was amazibg effective in the days after my c-section (from day 2 onwards) and I'm a total wuss with a low pain threshold.

"I think some people experience tooth pain differently (no way could I have been back at work the same day or the following) and it also depends on the location of the tooth, how long the extraction took and how complicated it was."

People experience going to the dentist differently as well.
I feel pain even with local anaesthetic while some friends have told me that they can't.
On the other hand I know someone who chooses to have fillings etc. without it as he prefers 'a bit' (!) of pain to having a numb mouth for a while.
