To be surprised how painful this is?

Had 2 upper front teeth extracted yesterday at 2.30. It went well and was over really quickly, minimal bleeding. They were root extractions but he didn't have any problems.

I have been surprised that I am still in a fair amount of pain. Not screaming out pain but enough to make me miserable! It was worse last night but hasn't improved much today and the salt water rinses feel nice at the time but seem to make the extraction sites hurt more after :-( I've got quite a lot of swelling (I can feel it but not see it) in my cheek aswell. It's very tender and feels a lot like it did when I had the infection there before extraction.

I'm guessing this is all normal? It's too early to have dry socket I think? And that would be agony I've heard.

I have read people feel fine after extractions and don't even need painkillers

Also that health care professional is being paid to see me, so without meaning to be rude he can find the time.

I will up the pain killers thanks everyone and monitor the swelling.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out T the same time nearly 20 years ago I can still remember how miserable I was for days after. Take paracetamol as well as ibruprofen. If it’s really painful ask the dentist for a prescription pain killer

QuestionableMouse · 31/10/2018 23:08

Don't use either a hot water bottle (can cause bleeding!) Or honey.

I'd do a full day taking paracetamol and ibuprofen in alternative doses to the recommended amount. Also try ice packs. If that's not helping then go back to the dentist and ask to be checked.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/10/2018 23:09

I had pain for about a week after a lower molar extraction. i used the slow release ibuprofen and took paracetamol on top if I had to. In my teens I had four extracted for orthodontics and remember being really miserable. My dentist told me it was better to stay out of pain than get out of pain in terms of medication.

Sunnysidegold · 31/10/2018 23:12

I had all my wisdom teeth out at 18 and was fine. Had a back toothtaken out a couple of years ago thinking it'd be fine and I was in pain for three days. If I hadn't had it done on a Friday I definitely would have had to take the next day off.

Hope you feel better soon

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 31/10/2018 23:15

Tooth extractions do hurt for the first few days up to a week afterwards. It's like if you lost a finger nail that would hurt, it's essentially a (very) small surgical procedure, it is going to hurt, you've lost a body part.

Alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol every 2 hrs if needs be up to obviously the max dose, or try every 3 hrs to give you longer coverage if that makes sense. Try that before the co-codamol but you might find you need some co-codamol. Keep up with salt water mouthrinses, I would recommend for times a day but be gentle.

If it gets worse, or you get a bad taste or smell from the socket go back to your dentist. Dry socket is really really painful, pain killers don't touch it, you will most likely know if you have dry socket. Do you smoke or have you had issues with healing in the past?

If it's an NHS dentist they actually wouldn't get paid to see you again, but thats besides the point as they obviously would if you needed.

HesterLee · 31/10/2018 23:17

Buscopan really worked for me when I had my wisdom teeth removed.

willowbranch · 31/10/2018 23:19

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I'm
Sorry for the stupid paid comment. I just
Meant I shouldn't be made to feel like
I am troubling the dentist if I feel something is wrong.

Would the salt water not encourage the clot to come away? I'm sure I was told not to rinse my mouth round for a few days when I had my wisdom tooth out (I could be wrong.)
I had no pain at all from mine for some reason. I would expect pain, but if it's bad and not improving I would definitely get it seen.

Cagliostro · 31/10/2018 23:24

On my sheet thing it said bathe not rinse, so the salt can work but you aren’t sloshing water round. Dentist showed me how to tilt my head so as to keep the site under water as it were.

He didn’t tell me how long for though

ozymandiusking · 31/10/2018 23:29

Hester Lee, Why would you use Buscopan which is a drug for Irritable bowel syndrome, as pain relief for toothextraction?
Why would anyone use honey ( which is almost pure sugar) for tooth pain?
God Help us!!

Alwaysawomantome · 31/10/2018 23:33

@HesterLee did you have your tooth extracted or the shits?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 31/10/2018 23:37

I've seen Buscopan used as a general painkiller, never tried it but have seen someone else take it. Personally I wouldn't. Honey is also supposed to help things heal, I believe.

HeebieJeebies456 · 31/10/2018 23:47

i had a molar extracted last thursday and the gum/bone is still sore. It might be a 'minor' procedure but it's still trauma being inflicted on your gum (have to dig under them to create space), and the bone as sometimes parts of it shatter/have to be broken to extract the tooth.

I was taking upto 6 Ibuprofen a day for the pain and swelling, now down to 1-2.

TheWiseWomansFear · 31/10/2018 23:56

My front extraction was a little sore for a week but not badly. Just felt gross and soft and mushy... I'd go back

TheWiseWomansFear · 31/10/2018 23:57

It was a long time ago bought so maybe I've forgotten the pain...

safariboot · 01/11/2018 00:21

I remember now actually, I did phone my dentist after one of the extractions because the pain was as bad as the original toothache so I thought the wrong tooth must have been pulled! But no, all correct, just takes the jaw a few days to stop hurting.

HesterLee · 01/11/2018 00:30

Buscopan is an anti-spasmodic and therefore helped relieve the throbbing pain I had after tooth extraction.
It's not taken for "the shits" but to help with abdominal cramping.

Unicyclethief · 01/11/2018 01:00

I was given fuck off massive painkillers after a tooth extraction (hydrocodone??) . I took them the next morning and promptly puked down myself. I then didn’t need them after the first day but they were bloody lovely.

Unicyclethief · 01/11/2018 01:01

Not in the U.K., I think everything is overly medicalised where I am.

whyhaveidonethis · 01/11/2018 06:50

@willowbranch how bloody stupid. That Health are professional is being paid to do a job; your job is to follow directions such as take pain relief as necessary. WTH do you expect that Healthcare professional to do about your pain that you are refusing to take pain killers for? They will advise you to take them. They don't have a magic wand that will miraculously stop the pain.... Well they almost do only they are called painkillers and you have refused that.

I hope your tooth feels better today

Gwenhwyfar · 01/11/2018 07:18

When I got my roots extracted the pain was bad for at least a week. Sorry OP.
If you need to, ask a doctor how much ibuprofen you can safely take in a day - it's more than it says on the pack.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/11/2018 07:19

"Paracetamol is a fabulous (and underrated) painting killer"

Wouldn't touch the sides for me with this kind of pain.

adaline · 01/11/2018 07:30

I had an upper wisdom tooth removed at Easter. It was really painful for 48 hours and that was with me alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen constantly.

After that it got much better and it was fine if a bit tender for the rest of the week.

I think some people experience tooth pain differently (no way could I have been back at work the same day or the following) and it also depends on the location of the tooth, how long the extraction took and how complicated it was.

Your pain is normal just like someone who went back to work the same day is normal.
