To be surprised how painful this is?

Had 2 upper front teeth extracted yesterday at 2.30. It went well and was over really quickly, minimal bleeding. They were root extractions but he didn't have any problems.

I have been surprised that I am still in a fair amount of pain. Not screaming out pain but enough to make me miserable! It was worse last night but hasn't improved much today and the salt water rinses feel nice at the time but seem to make the extraction sites hurt more after :-( I've got quite a lot of swelling (I can feel it but not see it) in my cheek aswell. It's very tender and feels a lot like it did when I had the infection there before extraction.

I'm guessing this is all normal? It's too early to have dry socket I think? And that would be agony I've heard.

I have read people feel fine after extractions and don't even need painkillers

No it's good that others agree it can be quite painful for a few days, I was worrying!

I will up the pain relief and see where we are on Friday

I had a tooth extraction earlier this year and was in incredible pain that night and bad pain for the next week until it settled down. Take paracetamol and codeine, swill (very softly) with salt water and get lots of rest.

Cagliostro · 31/10/2018 21:19

I knew this’d be about dental stuff! I had a tooth out on Monday (not at 2.30) and it still hurts, quite swollen.

UpstartCrow · 31/10/2018 21:21

I took 3 doses of 400mg Ibuprofen and 4 doses of paracetamol for 4 weeks after my last extraction.
Also, dont forget to do your salt water soaks 2 or 3 times a day.

TheGirlWithAllTheFeathers · 31/10/2018 21:24

Well now I’m really looking forward to getting a tooth out on Friday....

Cagliostro · 31/10/2018 21:25

I’m only taking painkillers when I really need it. I have one more appt on Monday anyway so at least he will be checking it then but if pain gets bad I will ring them.

On my aftercare sheet thing it said do salt water twice a day but I remember him saying four times so as of tomorrow I will increase it

LightastheBreeze · 31/10/2018 21:26

I think it would probably be bruising if it’s swollen, I am one of those people who have absolutely no pain after tooth extractions and I am sure it is because they have all been loose so there is no bruising as the dentist just gives a slight tug and out they come. Hope it gets better soon.

Cagliostro · 31/10/2018 21:27

He also said I have to sneeze with my mouth open and not blow my nose, due to the link to sinus pockets or something, but that may just be as mine was a back tooth? I was a bit too shaky and dizzy by this point to take much info in.

Cagliostro · 31/10/2018 21:28

That’s a good point, my teeth have never been loose so it was one hell of a tug as I have corkscrew roots.

Beamur · 31/10/2018 21:30

I had a molar taken out a couple of years ago and was shocked at how painful it was for several days afterwards.
Sorry TheGirlwithAllTheFeathers Grin

CrystalTits · 31/10/2018 21:32

Paramol is the dog’s proverbials. It’s the only thing that relieved my pain from a dental abscess. Don’t drive while taking it though, it can make you a bit woozy.
Hope you’re feeling better soon OP.

Atlantisen · 31/10/2018 21:34

The dihydrocodeine in paramol has 10x the strength of codeine. Washed down with a glass of wine and you’d be off your tits.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 31/10/2018 21:35

Not proud but I dosed myself on co codamol after my extraction and slept for 2 days

It’s was the dentists first time

So did it hurt ? Never knew Confused

safariboot · 31/10/2018 21:38

I've had too many teeth extracted and yeah, the sockets hurt for a couple of days afterwards. Remember to be gentle with your rinses so you don't dislodge the clot.

Likeshyt · 31/10/2018 21:42

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH 2:30 brilliant

AhhhhThatsBass · 31/10/2018 21:55

Random question. Will you be getting the teeth replaced? (These are your front teeth, right?

Molly499 · 31/10/2018 22:05

A hot water bottle will give you some relief.

tictac86 · 31/10/2018 22:26

Raw honey will help

blueshoes · 31/10/2018 22:30

Yes, OP continue to take the painkillers regularly to manage the pain. Don't wait till it hurts.

peachgreen · 31/10/2018 22:42

Ibuprofen works best when it's used consistently. It's better at keeping swelling and pain at bay than actually reducing it. Take the max daily dose for the next three days, even if it's not hurting at the time.

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 31/10/2018 22:45

Gads. Have you false replacements?

Yonijust · 31/10/2018 23:02

If it gets really bad, you could ask your G.P to prescribe pain relief, if over the counter doesnt work.

whyhaveidonethis · 31/10/2018 23:03

I don't mean to be rude but FFS just take some pain relief. You are in pain but don't like taking pain relief🤔 you can't have it both ways. Take pain killers regularly. Alternate ibuprofen and Co codamol. If its still not under control after that then bother the dentist again. No health care professional has time for people in pain who then admit to not taking pain relief when it's a perfectly viable option. I know it really winds me up

willowbranch · 31/10/2018 23:04

I had no intention of bothering my dentist again.

Paracetamol is a fabulous (and underrated) painting killer
