To almost always be disappointed in takeaways.

Takeaways are not something we have that often, maybe 3/4 times a year. Had one today, as I fancied a treat- KFC. What a disappointment Sad. Very little taste , looked unappetising and felt like a waste of money. I’m hungry again now too. Can’t say it’s just KFC, Chinese, fish and chips all seem to be a let down too. Sure i’ll Forget and order again at some point in the future. Anyone always anticipate a takeaway to be so much nicer than the reality?

We've just had a gorgeous pizza takeaway

Amaaboutthis · 01/11/2018 18:40

I think restaurant food in general is disappointing

Then you must either be a most phenomenol cook or eat in really poor restaurants because I would totally disagree with this. I love cooking but 99.9% of the time I eat much better in restaurants than I ever do at home.

camelfinger · 01/11/2018 18:42

I think I’ve gone beyond peak curry. Even if I go to a highly recommended place and eat in, it’s just quite nice rather than something amazing. And takeaway curries are expensive- I don’t think you get anything better than a takeout pack from the supermarket, which is much cheaper and not difficult to heat up.

PickAChew · 01/11/2018 18:58

I'm surrounded by takeaways and we still travel across town for fish and chips. They're opening a branch up the road, though, so no more chips gone soggy in a traffic jam.

luckycat007 · 01/11/2018 19:11

We spent some time in Birmingham- H said the takeaways doing Indian food were generally very good- more hits than misses. I don't like curry so can't comment but he is a fuss pot. Where we are now he hasn't found anywhere decent.

luckycat007 · 01/11/2018 19:12

I would be inclined to agree though with other people the safest general option is a good chippy if you like fish n chips. Agree with poster who said kfc fries were bad they are so soggy!!

Rednaxela · 01/11/2018 19:16

Agree most restaurants and takeaways are utterly disappointing. I guess this means I'm a better cook than I thought Shock

Just too much salt on everything and no actual flavour. Yuck.

Vixxxy · 01/11/2018 19:19

I always look forward to them, and then always seem to be disappointed also. Seems like a huge waste of money when it actually comes, and is nowhere near as nice as I am expecting it to be!

Elphame · 01/11/2018 19:31

I think restaurant food in general is disappointing

I tend to agree - one of the worst meals I've had was in a Michelin starred restaurant. The only vegetarian option on the menu was a dismal bland and beige coloured butternut squash risotto.

ToastyFingers · 01/11/2018 19:43

I agree about the restaurants, admittedly I'm not eating in Michelin star-worthy places but I'm a pretty good cook and could make a nicer version of most things I've eaten while out and about.

What I can't replicate is the terrible, greasy, additive laden deliciousness you get from McDonald's or a Chinese takeaway. I know it's not good for you but I bloody love it.

HoustonBess · 01/11/2018 19:43

If you only have it 3/4 times a year then you're not really going to be able to learn where is good... KFC is obviously going to be horrible. Fork out a bit more for a deliveroo if you want something actually good.

notacooldad · 01/11/2018 19:48

I had my favorite takeaway ( Paneer Bhuna) for the first time this year last week.
It was better than I remembered.

adoggymama · 01/11/2018 20:04

Yeah I always feel crap after but I think that's because they're no good for you anyway😂 but I do order a pizza every now and again and that's usually pretty good. (I mean, how can you go wrong with pizza?!)

DailyMailFail101 · 01/11/2018 20:25

I’m not keen on KFC or many of the chain takeaways but there’s an amazing Portuguese near us and it’s food is so good, the only disappointment is it’s a fifteen minutes walk but they usual take at least an hour to deliver.

PixieMiss · 01/11/2018 20:42

Where I live there is only 1 takeaway that delivers so I end up with a parmo if I want a delivery Grin

My previous town had loads but you couldnt get a decent pizza to save your life. Cracking Indian takeaway though.

Honeyroar · 01/11/2018 20:50

We've two very good indian takeaways and a good Italian one. The Chinese can be hit and miss - since I've been veggie I've not enjoyed Chinese (whereas the indian does wonderful veg dishes).

I think if KFC and burger restaurants as fast food rather than traditional takeaway.

Pebblesandfriends · 01/11/2018 21:09

Supermarket take out packs much better, cheaper and less greasy imo

mydogisthebest · 01/11/2018 21:09

I think McDonalds chips are disgusting. They are far too salty for a start (I have tried asking for no salt but they look at me as though I am mad) plus they seem to either be soggy or over cooked. Me and DH make lovely chips at home. Chips should be chunky, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside and I never put salt on them.

I do think both me and DH are fairly good cooks but maybe better than we think as we both think our food tastes much better than most restaurant food.

SaltyPeanut · 01/11/2018 21:30

Personally, I tend to find the idea of chips from the chip shop is more tantalising than the reality of eating them. It's like I remember how great they used to and the reality never measures up any more.

I remember hot chips, tasty and fresh, loaded with salt and vinegar. What I invariably get is some nearly cold sweaty smelling nastiness.
Our local is over the road so it's not travel time making them cold and is apparently award winning. I'll be fucked if I know why, can only think they must have paid the judges off.

I'm always suspicious when you enter a chippie these days and it's not hot in there. Chippies used to be like saunas.

Occasionally, when I'm very tired or busy, I forget how shit they are and go for a bag but mostly just stay away now.

dellacucina · 01/11/2018 21:37

Perhaps you don't have any good restaurants near you. If that's the case, yanbu. Though yabu for getting KFC.

My neighbourhood has amazing takeaways, especially Vietnamese, vegetarian Indian, and pizza. I want to order it all the time.

dellacucina · 01/11/2018 21:37

Oh, and anyone who gets fried food as a takeaway ever is highly unreasonable.

Ragwort · 01/11/2018 21:51

della I guess you are lucky enough to live in a fairly vibrant, culturally diverse city. The small town where I live has probably never heard of Vietnamese food Grin.

CurryAndCobra · 01/11/2018 22:05

Chips "I never put salt on them"

Our local 'chinese' is run by a vietnamese couple and because we got to know them well, they fix us seriously yummy vietnamese food when we go over. The local Indian is too bloody good and is responsible for all my weight. The naan and butter chicken is to die for.

Penguinsetpandas · 01/11/2018 22:10

We have amazing takeaways, just wish more would deliver to us. They are almost too good.

OrigamiZoo · 02/11/2018 00:47

Chips and chicken never travel well, neither does most pizza, chinese travels a bit better.

curries travels the best!
