To almost always be disappointed in takeaways.

Takeaways are not something we have that often, maybe 3/4 times a year. Had one today, as I fancied a treat- KFC. What a disappointment Sad. Very little taste , looked unappetising and felt like a waste of money. I’m hungry again now too. Can’t say it’s just KFC, Chinese, fish and chips all seem to be a let down too. Sure i’ll Forget and order again at some point in the future. Anyone always anticipate a takeaway to be so much nicer than the reality?

I'm lucky, there is a fabulous Indian takeaway near us (we used to live 4 doors away). Tonight was our monthly takeaway and it was fantastic. I bored by husband by randomly saying how much I enjoyed it for the rest of the evening.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 31/10/2018 21:42

Dirty Donald’s is little more than migraine recovery food. The hot drinks are cheap and cheerful though.

We don’t have any decent takeaways where I live, can’t get a good Chinese or Indian meal delivered at all.

SaucyJack · 31/10/2018 21:48

Depends what you get.

I never bother with pizza/burger/chippy food. Just tasteless soggy grease. I’m not even a food snob- but it just isn’t nice.

We’ve never had a crap Indian tho. I’d eat takeaway curry all day long if my bank balance and waistline could take it. Bloody love a phall.

PeridotCricket · 31/10/2018 21:56

Yep. Can usually knock something up myself nicer and quicker.

biggidybon · 31/10/2018 22:03

I'm sure I used to get vinegar! Shows how long I haven't been to Mac Donald's I can't even remember what condiments they offer

mydogisthebest · 01/11/2018 09:44

I agree with the poster who said most restaurant meals are not that great.

Me and DH both love cooking and I think we make pretty tasty meals. On the rare occasion we eat out we almost always say to each other "ours is better than this". Plus most restaurant food is far too salty and I don't want my food tasting of salt.

We only really eat indian food out now. We can both make pretty good curries but cannot master the perfect naan bread. I think without a tandoor over it is pretty impossible.

We moved though from an area with around 25 indian restaurants within a 2 mile radius, most of which were pretty good to an area with only 5, all of which are pretty crap.

I also think takeaway pizza is almost always awful. I really don't know how people can eat Domino's pizza. It always seems to be a funny colour and just taste vile

MamaHechtick · 01/11/2018 09:50

We used to eat a lot of take aways before DC's came along. For me they were a novelty as my father was a chef who had his own place many many moons ago.

We recently had take away now DC's are older, everything tastes awful! We've found a decent fish and chip shop but can't believe the prices now.
Indian take aways have never been good in my opinion, no where near authentic and far too sweet.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 09:56

Me too op.

There is a very good fish and chip shop in the next town. So it's a rare treat.
The local Chinese could be so much better (for the price of it.)

I'm trying to get the kids into quick fixes at home so they won't go down the crap takeaway route as they grow to adulthood.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 09:59

Dominoes have done great work on marketing amongst kids ime! But they did agree it was pretty poor tasting when I gave in to pester power.

The pizzas from Aldi are better by miles. And if you have an oven it's hardly a challenge to bake.

Brazenhussy0 · 01/11/2018 15:20

KFC is disgusting. Always has been, always will be. MaccyD's, Burger King and the like aren't great either.

What you need to find is a good Chinese takeaway. When you find a good one it is amazing. Same goes for fish'n'chips or Indian (though I'm not a fan of Indian food generally.)

Amlen · 01/11/2018 15:25

Go for African or caribbean takeaway (not turtle bay) for a good hearty meal that will actually fill you up. For some reason they're not as popular as Indian or Chinese not sure why Confused

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/11/2018 15:29

Its a sad downside of getting better at cooking that lots of restaurant food then tastes a bit rubbish.

I have four kids, three of who are now young adults, so my fakeaway skills are finely honed. I would say only our local chippy and a couple of Indians do a better job than I can do myself.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/11/2018 15:32

That's true Tinkly.

I used to say that I'd stop cooking and eat out / have takeaway / eat ready meals when the children left home. But it's unlikely to happen!

April2020mom · 01/11/2018 15:32

We don’t have a takeaway very often. The last time I ordered a take away dinner it was lovely. There are lots of takeaway places near my apartment building. I prefer to grab a sandwich from Sainsbury’s or Tesco.
I only tend to order a takeaway if I’m entertaining and we need food quickly as well. I live near a Chinese restaurant that does takeaway food. I was there one lunchtime and I decided to buy some food. Also the main restaurants in the area offer a takeaway option.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/11/2018 15:42

We've retired early so takeaways is something we've really cut back on. I find it useful to have really good convenience food in for times I can't be bothered to cook. For instance the Aldi fresh top of the range pizzas mentioned upthread are quite pricey but better and cheaper than a takeaway for when I can't be bothered to make pizza myself. Similarly our local farm shop does pricey but excellent precooked stuff that is better than a takeaway.

dontalltalkatonce · 01/11/2018 15:44

Wouldn't consider KFC a takeaway. We have a brilliant takeaway near us. The fish is brilliant but the chips aren't nice. Great Chinese, too. But I had a Maccie D's for lunch the other day and the burger was the size of a stamp.

Ragwort · 01/11/2018 15:58

Tend to agree that both Takeaways and Restaurant food is usually disappointing, perhaps I have very high standards Grin but I can think of very few places that I would actually choose to eat out at now. My DH travels a lot for business and despairs at the standards of hotel & restaurant cooking. This week he chose to buy a supermarket cooked chicken and eat it in the car as he couldn't face yet another dull, overpriced meal out. Grin.

We do have a very nice fish and chip shop near us, but that is the only decent takeaway we can get.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 01/11/2018 16:07

KFC is awful, I agree. We have the most amazing Bangladeshi restaurant just down the road, which people come from miles to. That one is worth it - just find a really good one :-)

DarlingNikita · 01/11/2018 16:08

I think you're just getting the wrong takeaways. Nando's is pretty good IMO, and Franco Manca for pizza. We also have an excellent south Indian place and some good Vietnamese/pan-Asian options.

To be honest though, I think part of the treat factor of a takeaway is just that you haven't cooked it yourself and there's less washing up. Taste is only part of it.

Polarbearflavour · 01/11/2018 16:19

I’m so having take out tonight! I order from an Indian restaurant via Deliveroo. DP is on an excerise so a perfect excuse!

luckycat007 · 01/11/2018 16:35

I always find the anticipation of a dominoes is great, as are the first couple of slices, and then ... meh. It is VERY hard in my neck of the woods to find a quality Chinese. Back in the day in Edinburgh we had a buffet called Jimmy Chungs. And you ALWAYS regretted going once you had went but for some reason you want to go at first, and its great for about ten minutes, then...meh. Maybe that was just my experience!!

These days I'm generally not a fan of buffets, although thats a different topic to take aways. But yes a good non regrettable take away is hard to find!!!

twosoups1972 · 01/11/2018 16:46

If you have a good chippie near you, you can't go wrong with fish and chips.

I like a takeaway pizza every so often but Dominos is far too greasy. Papa John's is better.

tiggerkid · 01/11/2018 16:50

Our local ones are alright. We don't go there often but when we do, the food generally seems pretty nice.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 01/11/2018 16:55

KFC needs to sort its chips out. They're terrible. McDonalds has the best chips by far.

InfiniteVariety · 01/11/2018 18:19

We never get takeaways - we either cook or eat out in a tried & tested restaurant we know we enjoy. If I want something fast I have eggs.
One of my problems with takeaways is that I really hate food that isn't piping hot and by the time you've carried it home it is usually luke warm
