AIBU to find this an odd thing to state on a menu?

I went to restaurant with a friend the other day. We were looking at the menu and two of the pasta dishes had the subheading 'The Ladies' choice(Creamy chicken and mushroom pasta) and The Gentleman's choice(Pasta in spicy tomato sauce with strips of steak and sliced chillis)

I found this so incredibly weird and also rather offensive. I was tempted to order the gent's pasta just to see if the staff would keel over in horror(I know that they didn't write the menu.)

The only other time I've encountered in person the whole concept of food intended for women and for men was at a wedding when one guest decided that the man next to her was being emasculated because he ordered the lemon cheesecake and not the chocolate fudge cake(which his wife ordered) and tried to convince them to swap as she was sure that being a man he really wanted chocolate cake and was being deprived. It was bizarre.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Sugar in tea is another one. It's getting less and less popular now and it's very rare for women to ask for it.

I'm happy to be bucking that particular trend. Coffee, now, that's a different matter ...

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 31/10/2018 21:12

Fully paid up sugar in tea drinker here.

And never try and offer me a sweetener- disgusting things.

Ditto Diet Coke- repulsive

Suttree · 31/10/2018 21:20

I think you're just looking for things to get offended about.....

RuthiePe · 31/10/2018 21:31

In-laws offer Christmas dinner with penis portions - the men get an extra yorkshire pudding, more roasties and an extra slice of meat.

I stole my husbands extra yorkshire last year.

plaidlife · 31/10/2018 21:39

I remember a pub in rural wales where DH ordered a glass of white wine and I had a pint of Guinness, the look on the barman's face was priceless.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 31/10/2018 21:46

I know MN is very dismissive of penis portions, but - dons hard hat - I actually think as a general rule most men tend to eat more than most women.

This obviously doesn't make it acceptable to dish up fewer Yorkshires to female guests. Grin

JaceLancs · 31/10/2018 21:50

I once went to a wedding where there was a totally set menu - not unusual except all the men got the same starter (pate) whilst the women had melon, main was a chicken dish if you were female, beef for men
I can’t remember the dessert options but was the same system
Has anyone else come across this, I thought it was weird?
I was there as a lone parent with DP, so no one to swap with, but many other couples were sharing or swapping meals

TheWiseWomansFear · 31/10/2018 21:52

In Germany there is a chain steak house where you can order the 'Mrs Steak' or 'Mr Steak' - a smaller steak with salad or a larger steak with a baked potato and sour cream.

I happily ordered the Mr Steak. I don't really care what they want to call it.

glamorousgrandmother · 31/10/2018 21:53

pabloescobar that always happens to us too.

PurpleAndTurquoise · 31/10/2018 22:02

Maybe just maybe they find that more often women order chicken and men order steak. I am sure it's not a problem if you wanted to eat the gentleman's steak.

TheWiseWomansFear · 31/10/2018 22:03

@WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit I used to manage a pub and you'd be amazed how many women still request 'ladies glasses' - they're usually stemmed or slim half pint glasses

bluegreygreen · 31/10/2018 22:10

Even more annoyingly - DH is gluten free (medical reasons). If we go somewhere new, they almost always put the gluten free meal down in front of me. At least we're used to checking!

isitthehormones · 01/11/2018 17:29

I’ve been for a curry before and been told I didn’t want to order what I had chosen as it would be too spicy for me as a woman. I ate every last bit.

Port1ajazz · 01/11/2018 17:45

What a fuss about nothing , PC again ?

Port1ajazz · 01/11/2018 17:47

Absolutely !

blackteasplease · 01/11/2018 17:47

All I can think of is how horrible that "ladies choice" sounds . And what did men and women who weren't gentry Have?

blackteasplease · 01/11/2018 17:49

Jane I would hate hate that! The women's options sound horrible and the men's lovely!

FartnissEverbeans · 01/11/2018 17:50

Strangely enough my Chinese friend was telling me today that fruit and veg are considered ‘women’s food’ where she comes from Confused Apparently her dad refuses to eat either.

HappyHippy45 · 01/11/2018 17:51

That's ridiculous OP.
Gender assigned Meals and drinks....good grief!

Once several times went out for drinks in Newcastle in the early '90s.
I ordered a pint and the woman I was out with questioned why I hadn't asked for it in 2 half pint glasses........I did get a few looks but that could have been the tye dyed clothes.

WorldofTofuness · 01/11/2018 17:52

Yeah, but the point is 1) there is lots of variation within that and 2) it's up to the individual to decide how much they want to eat.

There's a gene common to people of east Asian descent that makes them feel unwell on relatively small (to Caucasians) amounts of alcohol. That wouldn't make it OK to pour the wine out at a dinner party: "Wendy, Ian, Chen--oh no, only a bit for you, as you're Chinese you can't take it."

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/11/2018 17:56

With the 'ladies' glass' thing, I have tiny hands and find it quite difficult to hold a pint glass, especially if it's full and has condensation on it. To be safe I would hold it in one hand and have my other hand underneath which makes me look like a toddler drinking from an adult cup.

I also have iPhone regret that I bought a 6s instead of an SE because it's just slightly too big for me to grip and now my lower finger joints ache most of the time. My brother told me that the SE was brought out because lots of female Apple employees complained that the 6 was uncomfortable to hold. I'm not sure how true that is because I notice that they have brought out any smaller versions of the new models. Perhaps they now do hand measurement before offering jobs at Apple.

There's actually a pretty serious side to 'gendered food'. In Nepal, a woman who's just given birth is not allowed to eat meat, pulses, or other items that would give the nutrition she needs after pregnancy & childbirth. Sad

fiona25 · 01/11/2018 17:57

oh for gods sake. who cares! so what! have a joke about it with your server then move on with your life! I normally get the bigger meat meal and when server comes along with food they ask who's is who's. I may be small but I have big appetite ☺ someone complained about a local carribean place that had been here over 20 years about the name of a side sauce, causing no end of trouble, then decided to eat elsewhere despite said restaurant removing the name of the sauce! bloody crazy.

ImogenTubbs · 01/11/2018 17:58

I was at a wedding where they gave the men chocolate fudge cake and the women lemon cheesecake. Apparently because they were the groom and brides favourites but I was still a bit

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/11/2018 17:58

I meant 'haven't brought out smaller versions' obviously.
