to think this is so strange - present gone missing!

Have name changed but frequent poster.

It was my birthday on Sunday & last week (Tuesday) I saw my best friend very briefly and she gave me my present to open on the day. I opened it on Sunday and she had bought me a nice box of chocolates – lovely, I like chocolates. Anyway I text her to say a generic thank you she text back have a lovely day – all’s well and I good. But I’ve just spoken to her and she didn’t get me chocolates. She bought me a very ‘naice’ candle.

How weird is that. She has absolute no reason to lie – we’ve know each other forever and don’t have ‘expectations’ in the sense that sometimes we spend a lot, sometimes we don’t. I asked if it could have got mixed up with someone else’s present and no, she had no other birthdays going on. The strangest part is the gift bag and wrapping paper were exactly what she had wrapped the candle in – but it was chocolates.

What the hell has happened to the candle? We had a laugh about it but honestly, it’s so weird!!

If they sell both products at the same place, she looked at one product and picked the other one and didn't realise? I did this the other day, I went to buy a ginger beer, picked it, arrive at the till and I was holding a ice tea, that was just next to the ginger beer. Oh the deception. (I am far from 40, I don't even have an excuse).

@KurriKurri Amazon sell Hotel Chocolat stuff, and I've seen them in a Fenwick branch before. So depending on the brand of candle it could be conceivable that items were mixed up in store. I feel like the friend would surely have noticed when doing the wrapping at home, though!

I'm too intrigued by this.

NicoAndTheNiners · 30/10/2018 12:23

Yes, I'm imagining a big square, flat box of chocolates but if they're in a candle shaped box like the link that would explain it.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 30/10/2018 12:23

Are you 100% sure you haven't eaten a candle OP?

I mean some of them smell sooo good and with the weird chocolate fillings you can get....

artemisdubois · 30/10/2018 12:25

@Nico, OP mentioned upthread that the chocolates were in a square box.

toastedbeagle · 30/10/2018 12:26

This is so weird!!! Can you link us a pic of the chocolates!!

Jinglebells99 · 30/10/2018 12:26

John Lewis sells Hotel Chocolate. What is the brand of candle that she says she bought? Is it is similar packaging to the chocolate. Similar name of fragrance perhaps?

Workreturner · 30/10/2018 12:32

She’s just got confused. It happens

Personally I’d never wrap a box of chocolates but that’s another matter entirely!

Jinglebells99 · 30/10/2018 12:33

Actually the packaging branding for jo malone and Hotel chocolate is very similar

OMG, are we all supposed to be suffering from senility over the age of 40 or something!?!?! Bizarre comment.

I'd rather get chocolates than candles, so if she did mix them up I think you got a good deal out of it!

updownleftrightstart · 30/10/2018 12:35

Places like John Lewis sell Hotel chocolat stuff and plenty of candles. So it's possible she grabbed the wrong thing off the shelf (or they sent the wrong thing in her online order), or took the right thing to the till but it got mixed up there, and she just didn't notice as she was in a rush wrapping it.

Choccyhobnob · 30/10/2018 12:36

I need to know!!!

RainbowsArePretty · 30/10/2018 12:37

That is odd!

MrsEricBana · 30/10/2018 12:38

The only explanation can be that she was sure the thing she'd bought was a candle and then didn't question it, but agree that's flipping weird. I've done stuff like that before and wouldn't have believed it except there was proof (of my madness).

YourVagesty · 30/10/2018 12:39

hmmm. I think she's convinced she bought a candle but actually, the item she picked up and wrapped was chocolates.

PossibiliTea · 30/10/2018 12:40

....how weird?! Does she have the receipt for the candle? Just to make sure it wasn’t chocolates

Fiveletters · 30/10/2018 12:45

Bizarre! I hope you find out (and come back and update us all!)

Gwenhwyfar · 30/10/2018 12:47

"I love the assumption that this is an ‘age related’ issue!
“Is she over the age of 40?”
hmm"

I'm 41. Didn't realise I'm going senile!

Eminybob · 30/10/2018 12:51

Google the chocolates, get her to google the candle, and then compare the pictures. I reckon it’ll be because they are in similar packaging, like Jinglebells says.

Quartz2208 · 30/10/2018 12:51

If she bought it from John Lewis probably a box of chocolates was accidentally put in with the candles - she picked up and paid (similar price) and wrapped it without paying attention (she said herself it was rushed)

She needs to check the receipt if she has it

defectiveinspector · 30/10/2018 12:57

Do what Eminybob says please and put us out of our misery.

EdisonLightBulb · 30/10/2018 12:59

Hotel Chocolat chocolates probably cost more than the candle, if my friend bought these chocolates and I got a candle I would be gutted Grin

Likeshyt · 30/10/2018 12:59

coloursthatweremyjoy brilliant 😂

Cabochard · 30/10/2018 13:00

Gwen
No! You are fully in the throes of menopause at 40
But it’s “ok” so don’t worry if you mix up parcel giving!HmmGrin

BuildingQuote · 30/10/2018 13:01
