Have name changed but frequent poster.

It was my birthday on Sunday & last week (Tuesday) I saw my best friend very briefly and she gave me my present to open on the day. I opened it on Sunday and she had bought me a nice box of chocolates – lovely, I like chocolates. Anyway I text her to say a generic thank you she text back have a lovely day – all’s well and I good. But I’ve just spoken to her and she didn’t get me chocolates. She bought me a very ‘naice’ candle.

How weird is that. She has absolute no reason to lie – we’ve know each other forever and don’t have ‘expectations’ in the sense that sometimes we spend a lot, sometimes we don’t. I asked if it could have got mixed up with someone else’s present and no, she had no other birthdays going on. The strangest part is the gift bag and wrapping paper were exactly what she had wrapped the candle in – but it was chocolates.

What the hell has happened to the candle? We had a laugh about it but honestly, it’s so weird!!

there will definitely be a simple explanation.... and i need to know what it is... please update us if you find out :) x

AudTheDeepMinded · 30/10/2018 11:56

As a side note, I blinking hate candles so the outcome is a huge bonus in my eyes! Hope you get to the bottom of it!

champagneplanet · 30/10/2018 11:59

Whoever did the swap has good taste in chocolate, I hope they were the filled ones totally misses the point of thread...

Seaweed42 · 30/10/2018 12:01

Did you open the chocolates on your birthday? And open a few other things at the same time?

SchadenfreudeUndeadified · 30/10/2018 12:04

I have a dog which could explain the knocking over, but I don't think he can re-wrap that neatly.

'Tis a fact - paws are a bugger when it comes to wrapping things up. I have wrap all my dogs' presents to Mr Schadenfreude, due to difficulties with folding and the hazards of sticky tape/fur combinations.

whereismycandle · 30/10/2018 12:04

ohmygodtheykilledkenny that's a good point - the chocolates weren't massive though (kind of a sqare box rather than rectangle) so it could have been a similar ish size.

jojo2232 i will - it's killing both of us - we've gone over and over it!!!

audthedeepend ahh i love candles, i like all the old lady gifts me. Wink

How odd! Did she actually see the candle or the actual wax or was it in a fancy box?

I'm puzzled and intrigued

I'm also very impressed that you shared your nice chocolate with others. You are nicer than me

Emilizz34 · 30/10/2018 12:07

What does it say on her receipt?

BlankTimes · 30/10/2018 12:07

Does she have the receipt? Failing that could she check her bank statement for the amount that the candle cost, if it was an individual purchase?

BlankTimes · 30/10/2018 12:08

X-post Emilizz34

Kittykat93 · 30/10/2018 12:08

That's so strange!! I was thinking she'd obviously mixed up presents but if she has never brought anything from hotel chocolat then that is just plain odd!!

I need to know the outcome of this Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2018 12:08

Someone else gave you chocolates and happened to have the same paper ? Had she ordered the candle online, been sent chocolates by mistake but not noticed because the shape of the box was right and she was in a rush to wrap it ?

Cabochard · 30/10/2018 12:12

I love the assumption that this is an ‘age related’ issue!
“Is she over the age of 40?”
Hmm
Hope you find out what happened op

NoSquirrels · 30/10/2018 12:13

Your friend is mistaken somehow- she wrapped the Hotel Chocolat but thought she was wrapping the candle. At some point she’ll discover the candle and go Oh Fuck!

KurriKurri · 30/10/2018 12:13

Can you buy Hotel Chocolat chocolates at any other outlet apart from Hotel Chocolat itself? - that might explain her pikcing up chocs when she thought it was candle.
no idea why someone would swap the gifts - HC chocolates and candles are both perfectly nice gifts, someone would only swap surely if they thought their gift was inferior in some way.

If I were your friend - it would have been caused by some sort of crazy absent minded episode on my part - as I regularly do stuff like this Grin But I don't know your friend, chances of her being more compos mentis than me a fairly high Grin

KurriKurri · 30/10/2018 12:14

Have any of your other gift givers said 'hope you liked the chocs' ?

barleycorn · 30/10/2018 12:14

Has she checked her receipt?
I’m thinking that if I was shopping in John Lewis the candles and chocolates aren’t so far apart so if I was picking up a few things I could easily pick up a candle shaped box of chocolates and not notice Blush

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/10/2018 12:15

Please come back and tell us if you find out what happened!

Sammymommy · 30/10/2018 12:17

Are you sure your DP did get nosey, got into your wardrobe ), broke the candle and replace it to cover it (although I'll admit he would probably have replaced it by another candle).

Your wardrobe is a portal to another dimension? Stand in it with your fists clenched really hard to see? Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2018 12:17

Ask her where she bought the candle, and if it was in person or online . Then ask if the retailer also stocks the chocs. I really think she has assumed the chocs were a candle at some stage in the process. What candle did she think it was ? Perhaps the packaging is very similar.

Twork · 30/10/2018 12:18

Where did she buy them? I could see how the packaging for Hotel Chocolate may be mistaken for candle pàckàaging in a rush in a shop.

Sammymommy · 30/10/2018 12:19

Cabochard I know, that hilarious, 40 is the new 80..

What happens to Women at 40 years old and 1 day?

NoSquirrels · 30/10/2018 12:19

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2018 12:19

If the chocs were like these, you can understand a mix up www.hotelchocolat.com/uk/pink-champagne-truffles-grand.html

Excited101 · 30/10/2018 12:21

Hotel chocolat can be bought in a few different places, big depeartment stores often stock them. I think she either thought she bought you a candle (the boxes are often very minimalist) or sent the candle to someone else by accident and hadn’t noted that the chocolates she bought are hotel chocolat ones.
