I'm 34 and I have never tried a cup of tea

I don't know where to start, how do you know which tea bags to use? Do I have milk, if so, how much? Sugar?

It's always puzzled me how people already know all this, I think it's what's put me off trying it before now!

I've been drinking tea since I was a toddler. I think if I had never had it and tried it now for the first time I probably wouldn't like it. Grin
My DP used to drink lots of tea when I met him but years ago we both did a diet that didn't allow tea so he has never bothered since.
My adult son has never tasted tea or coffee.

starkid · 29/10/2018 14:20

I'm late twenties and have never had a (regular english breakfast) tea or coffee. Just frappuccino or peppermint tea.

Miss out on the social aspect of drinking tea constantly round peoples houses, but whatever

OhLemons · 29/10/2018 14:25

I love tea, don't like coffee at all.

To the disgust of many I put milk into a mug first along with a tea bag. Pour on boiling water, leave for 3 mins or so, remove tea bag (no squeezing) and then add a flat teaspoon of sugar.

xJessica · 29/10/2018 14:44

I love tea. We use Yorkshire teabags, I just stick one in a mug, add boiling water and quite a bit of milk but you'd need to experiment with how strong and how milky you like it.

ethelfleda · 29/10/2018 14:46

My mum is 70 and has never had a yoghurt

This made me LOL Grin

Tighnabruaich · 29/10/2018 16:53

zukiecat I'm Scottish, living in Scotland and have never heard that expression.

Raspberry10 · 29/10/2018 18:03

47 and have only drunk tea twice, it’s disgusting. YANBU Grin

BumDisease · 29/10/2018 18:06

Tea is shit. Disgusting sickly sweet warm water. And coffee is even worse.

NewGrandad · 29/10/2018 18:10

@TheWiseWomansFear

Two (spoonful's of sugar) and coo (milk. Coo = cow in Scotland)

JheronimusBosch · 29/10/2018 18:10

Are the people who have never tried tea/coffee generally unadventurous about food/drink in general? I'm trying to think of things I've never tried (assuming I've had the opportunity) and I can't think of anything. Why would I not even try it???

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/10/2018 18:14

Ive never eaten a radish

Just dont like the look of them

BumDisease · 29/10/2018 18:25

I'd eat shit if it was put in front of me but I just don't like hot drinks...

fruitpastille · 29/10/2018 19:12

Blimey, just stick the kettle on op!

Singlenotsingle · 29/10/2018 19:18

Tetley's or PG Tips. Tea is for everyday, coffee just occasionally. One teabag in the mug, top with boiling water and then add milk. Stir until it gets to the right colour and strength. Taste. Add sugar (if necessary). Tea is a good digestif, and apparently is very good for you

onalongsabbatical · 29/10/2018 20:02

This is so nearly right. A tad paler and a smidge more milk. How's it going, the great tea experiment of the 29th October 2018? Grin

I'm 34 and I have never tried a cup of tea
puzzledlady · 29/10/2018 20:08

are you english? :) Yorkshire is GREAT starter tea.

BagelGoesWalking · 29/10/2018 23:51

BumDisease maybe your posterior problems are somehow affecting your taste buds 😂 Tea is lovely!

riviana · 30/10/2018 00:01

Just my opinion, but from decades of drinking tea, the worst loose tea is
better than the very best tea bag tea. However, I like piping hot black tea, no sugar, not very strong, so there's nowhere for the tea to hide.

theonetowalkinthesun · 30/10/2018 00:07

Agree with @singlenotsingle , put the kettle on, get some pg tips or Tetley, put the teabag in a mug, pour the hot water 3/4 of the way up the mug, faff about the kitchen for a minute or so, use a teaspoon to squeeze the teabag against the wall of the mug, take the teabag out, put a teaspoon of sugar in if this is first cup of tea (because you might find it bitter without), stir the tea to dissolve the sugar, add a cm of milk to make your tea the colour of a cardboard box, give that a stir and Bob's your uncle!

SwizzelsFizzers · 30/10/2018 00:16

I am 60 and have had 2. One age 8 as a brownie and 1 age about 35 when I asked for coffee, someone gave me tea and I had a slurp.

Can't get over the smell, like cats pee.

Cheekyandfreaky · 30/10/2018 00:39

Alright, this thread is controversial- typhoo?! Tea bag in for 3 minutes and then add sugar if it’s bitter?! Madness.

Op, I recommend starting with an English breakfast/ every day tea (twinnings) as your gateway drink.

Teabag in cup.
Boil kettle.
Pour water over tea bag (very important).
Leave for 30 seconds to a minute.
Stir and squeeze bag.
Add milk of choice until it’s golden brown.
Get a hobnob and dip it in.

When you graduate from this level, try Assam, it’s bloody gorgeous.

TuMeke · 30/10/2018 02:38

At the risk of being run off MN...
I want to suggest decaf tea as an option. It still tastes of tea but no caffeine (obviously), so none of the addiction/ headache issues PP have mentioned. I have never drunk coffee as it smells like death and misery to me, but I’m a tea fiend and drink gallons of the stuff. I had to give up caffeine a decade or so ago thanks to insomnia, and was so relieved that decaf tea started to appear in the supermarkets then. It does taste a tiny bit different but still good, and if you’ve got nothing to compare it with there’s no problem there Grin Most of the tea brands and supermarket own brands do decaf versions now.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 30/10/2018 02:41

As my great aunt Mary used to say “try everything in life except for incest and Morris dancing “
Try it, don’t force yourself, and if you don’t like it, there’s plenty of other things, like gin

EcruTable · 30/10/2018 02:49

Mind blown. Tea is everything to me. Can’t imagine life without it. I drink it like a chain smoker has fags. I like PG tips and Tetley best. Nothing wrong with decaf either. Oh yes a hobnob would be lovely too.
Damn, I think I’m going to have to get out of bed and have a cuppa now!

LondonLassInTheCountry · 30/10/2018 02:51
