I'm 34 and I have never tried a cup of tea

I don't know where to start, how do you know which tea bags to use? Do I have milk, if so, how much? Sugar?

It's always puzzled me how people already know all this, I think it's what's put me off trying it before now!

I never got on with the aeropress. It went to live with my OH who does not use it either.

MollyHuaCha · 29/10/2018 12:35

No to tea bags! You need a pot, strainer, loose tea and some nice cups and saucers.

If you go into a specialist shop such as T2, Whittard or even better, an independent tea shop, the staff there will help you select the right tea for you.

Luki · 29/10/2018 12:41

Almost 30 and I've never tasted tea or coffee either. Like PPs have said, it's the smell! I have the occasional cup of green tea but I'm really not a fan of hot drinks.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:59

Use teabags - don't faff around with loose leaves or you'll probably never want another cup

Leave the teabag in the mug for 3 minutes after adding boiling water
then take out the teabag - for your 1st cup, you don't want bitter

Also, first try it without milk or sugar for a couple of sips

then if you don't like it, add a teasp sugar, or 2 sweetener tabs if you prefer those

another few sips,
then you could always try milk.

btw, I drink herbal tea, also in teabags.
Lots of nice flavours: mint, ginger & lemon, hibiscus ...

loveshinealight · 29/10/2018 13:01

Mormons don't drink tea or coffee. My mum is 57 and has never had tea coffee or any booze! I think it's a bit strange if it's because you think you won't get into heaven for having a cuppa but fine if you are just now bothered.

crispysausagerolls · 29/10/2018 13:01

27 also never tried it as I hate the smell, and the idea of mixing milk with water gives me th willies

SilverySurfer · 29/10/2018 13:10

I'm in my 70s and have never drunk tea or coffee and have no intention of doing do. Why do you want to start now?

BagelGoesWalking · 29/10/2018 13:13

I am shocked to the very core! 😬

Yorkshire tea bags (don't get big standard cheap stuff, worth the little extra money). Pour in boiled water, 30 secs after its boiled. Let it sit for a minute or two, add milk. No sugar. Enjoy!

Junkmail · 29/10/2018 13:18

I haven’t read the whole thread but DO NOT make tea is a cup. It MUST be made in a teapot. You can buy one cup teapots if you want to make a cup only for yourself. Two teabags for a pot that makes more than one cup. One teabag for a one cup pot. Unsweetened soya milk is best unless you enjoy a more creamy drink. No sugar but if you don’t like slightly bitter tastes then ONE sweetener is good. Controversially milk and sugar go BEFORE the tea for best mixing results. Drink it while it’s super hot—DO NOT allow the tea to become lukewarm before consuming.

Sorry for the yelling—I’m very passionate about tea Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 29/10/2018 13:19

A3 is about the colour you're looking for (imo)

I'm 34 and I have never tried a cup of tea
MuseumofInnocence · 29/10/2018 13:23

This thread is ridiculous - people not drinking tea and coffee - honestly

TheWiseWomansFear · 29/10/2018 13:33

I always drink Yorkshire tea, have it mid level strong (look up a tea colour chart) and add sugar or honey to taste (usually 1tsp).

I never used to have sugar but lately have enjoyed it...

It's like any other beverage, you try it and adjust if you like it sweeter, stronger, milkier

zukiecat · 29/10/2018 13:34

Don't drink tea OP!

It's vile, horrible evil stuff

Black coffee for me, DD2 likes tea but she's a weirdo

TheWiseWomansFear · 29/10/2018 13:36

@NewGrandad what on earth is two and coo?

Montsti · 29/10/2018 13:37

I’m 42 and have tried neither tea nor coffee....the thought of either makes me feel a bit ill...I love cold drinks😊

StormyLovesOdd · 29/10/2018 13:38

I've never tried it either and I'm 48, can't stand the smell either so I have no intention of ever trying it.

Justanotheruser01 · 29/10/2018 13:38

My mum is 70 and has never had a yoghurt.

Sethis · 29/10/2018 13:38

Tea tastes like bathwater after I've been lying there reading a book for an hour or two.

Coffee is bitter nonsense enjoyed by masochists. You get 99% of the benefit just by sniffing the mug repeatedly.

Honestly it's just a ritual so people can do things with their hands while talking. Amazing how awkward they get when you say 'No, nothing, thank you' Grin

ohlittlepea · 29/10/2018 13:41

Any fair trade tea 💚
Water must be boiling. I like mine with oat milk, it makes it taste of vanilla.

5foot5 · 29/10/2018 13:43

My DD never fancied any hot beverage, other than hot chocolate, until she was about 17. She then decided that it would be useful socially to have a drink she could ask for. She tried coffee and hated it so she trained herself to like tea. At 23 she now sinks great big mugs of the stuff!

We are another Yorkshire Gold house, though I can't get too precious about it - almost any English Breakfast tea would probably do.

I know most people have a little milk with it but personally I prefer it without any milk or sugar. It is just the way I was brought up to drink it and I really don't like it with milk in.

5foot5 · 29/10/2018 13:44

My mum is 70 and has never had a yoghurt.

That is just such a random sentence it made me LOL

Sexykitten2005 · 29/10/2018 13:49

Go to a T2 if you have near you and try all theirs. The staff are usually very knowledgable and happy to talk about tea

BloobCurdling · 29/10/2018 14:07

Coffee is bitter nonsense enjoyed by masochists.

Coffee is like smoking - it is, basically, disgusting objectively speaking, but once you get a taste for it, you just want it. When I was pg I went off coffee and it smelt so gross. That's what it must smell like all the time to non-coffee lovers.

zukiecat · 29/10/2018 14:13

TheWiseWoman

Two and Coo means two sugars and milk

Coo is the Scottish word for Cow

I detest milk, but it's a very common way of asking for sugar and milk here

BagelGoesWalking · 29/10/2018 14:14

JunkMail you're right about tea in a teapot but, realistically, I always use a teabag in a cup. Now DD is at uni, I'm the only tea drinker in the house.

NEVER bother buying tea in a disposable cup, it's always disgusting. Only in a cafe where they'll give you a little teapot.

My brother, a heathen in so many ways, doesn't drink coffee or tea. (Weirdo).
