Gender reveal nonsense

This whole make a big thing with a gender reveal - glitter, balloons, cakes with coloured centres etc

Then the parents act all surprised 😱

Isn't the biggest 'gender reveal' just to wait until they are born???

This really flipping irritates me and it's so American.

Just watched the LaBrant Family gender reveal (it came up on my timeline..why do I click on things that irritate me 😂) Boy it made my teeth itch!!

Aibu 🙄😂 anyone with me? Don't even get me started on baby showers....

(I was briefly identifying as a pirate when I wrote that last line)

my3bears · 24/10/2018 14:20

Green cake bahaha some of these comments crack me up!

I went to a baby shower once. An American acquaintance, she hosted herself. It was years ago, rather weird and I didn't get it at all but did the polite thing and went along with it. I accepted it as part of her culture. But since then it seems to have escalated now includes the gender reveal.

I appreciate that, waterlego, but it happens more often than you realize. It’s not just online either.

strawberrisc · 24/10/2018 14:35

But @Kescilly it happens in all walks of life! The Simpsons lampoon almost every country on the planet (including the English having bad teeth). I’m not offended.

RedDrink · 24/10/2018 14:58

It happens a lot on here, I've seen nasty comments calling Americans idiots and barbaric and worse. I report, MN does nothing.

I retorted once saying someone would have to be an idiot to believe the crap they were saying about Americans. I get reported, post removed, I get griped at by mods. 🙄🖕

my3bears · 24/10/2018 15:04

@strawberrisc that's true 🤣

@Kescilly look up very British problems online it will be good read for you. We take the pee out ourselves all the time, it's dry and sarcastic.

I was desperate to know the sex of my baby - I needed a head start on sewing and knitting clothes, haha. My next one I plan on keeping a surprise until they are born.

PickleForPresident · 24/10/2018 15:38

I know what you mean @Kescilly It's hard enough to emigrate to another country without having people constantly turn up their noses at anything American. It seems to be literally the worst thing that anything can be. "Oh a baby shower? Tacky, grabby, vile, AMERICAN." It's apparently the worst insult.
I don't get it much in real life but it's on here quite frequently. People start threads to moan about the perceived Americanisation of the U.K. and use examples like Halloween, gender reveal parties, baby showers, saying mom, etc. It's very disheartening to those of us that are Americans living in the U.K.

DoYouLikeHueyLewisandTheNews · 24/10/2018 16:20

Gender reveals aren't my bag and none of my close friends have done it but some acquaintances have (social media). If they're happy then why not.

We found out the sex of our child despite initially not planning to. I had a strong feeling I knew and subconsciously bonded (didn't help that we had a long list of possible names for one sex but only one name for the sex I thought our child was). I didn't want to risk being wrong (I wasn't).

I don't understand how vitriolic some are over other people finding out the baby's sex and having baby showers. Different strokes for different folks.

chrisinthesun · 24/10/2018 16:59

@tenbob

This is probably outing but my brother and his tacky AF wife had one.

Except they clearly didn't have a very good baker, so when they cut into the cake, it was green.

And thankfully, someone captured the exact moment she did a 'huh?' confused face, while he did a 'why the fuck did I go along with this' eyeroll

You sound SO pleased that your brother and SIL's celebration went a bit wrong. Hmm

What kind of mean-spirited individual does that? How unpleasant you sound!

And that goes for quite a number of others here too. Poo-pooing and bashing what other people do. If you don't like it/are not interested, then don't get involved. Coming onto a message forum to bash them is just spiteful.

And as has been said, the nasty comments about Americans, (claiming how vile and tacky they and their customs are,) are BANG out of order. Very bigoted and rude. Shame on you all. Hmm

RatBabies · 24/10/2018 17:14

Has anybody mentioned the cakes yet.
Think they pretty much encapsulate everything I hate about gender reveals.

Guns or glitter is a worryingly common theme

waterlego6064 · 24/10/2018 18:11

‘Guns or Glitter’

Jesus wept. Sad

waterlego6064 · 24/10/2018 18:12

How about ‘knickers or knives?’

waterlego6064 · 24/10/2018 18:13

Pole dancer or polar explorer?

Capretta · 24/10/2018 18:15

Knives or Wives

my3bears · 24/10/2018 19:06

They are simply vulgar @RatBabies

The worst one I saw on FB was one where they revealed the sex, blue balloons etc, then the man whipped his top off to reveal a t shirt bearing the legend “real men make twins”. 🤮

waterlego6064 · 24/10/2018 19:22

Oh Seren, that’s embarrassingly naff. And also factually incorrect I think. Surely it’s the female gametes which ‘decide’ on twins. (Whether identical or not).

waterlego6064 · 24/10/2018 19:24

Also Seren, did you post on a big forum in the past? One frequented by The Guvnor, CQ, Elaine etc?

SerenDippitty · 24/10/2018 19:29

waterlego don’t think so, not posted anywhere using this user name!

I do post on other forums but none of those names ring a bell.

waterlego6064 · 24/10/2018 19:31

Ah ok, no worries. 🙂 The one I knew was a great poster, as I’m sure anyone with that username must be!

SausageOnAFork · 24/10/2018 19:32

Real men make twin? Fuck off to the far side of fuck with that.
His poor wife having to cope with a twin pregnancy while he struts round like a dog with two dicks.
As said above, as far as I understand it twin occur when either there are two eggs released by the woman or when the fertilised egg splits in two.

ASMRtist · 24/10/2018 19:39

Depends. If they are the kind of people who are usually “any excuse for a party/get together” and it’s all good fun with cake and balloons and bubbles, then fair enough.

It can be a bit narcissistic/grabby done wrong though.

There’s an episode of US Shameless where the pregnant teenage Debbie wants to have a gender reveal cake because she’s seen it around, and the baker basically tells her she isn’t important/rich enough to have one, she can have some stale cupcakes instead. It’s heartbreaking.

JustDanceAddict · 24/10/2018 19:41

So glad this wasn’t a thing when I was pregnant. I didn’t find out the sex until they were born - I wanted a surprise (you get so few in life). Baby showers weren’t a thing either!
I’d go to one if I was invited (with a box of chicks/flowers) but would prefer to wait until baby was born to give cards and presents.

ChikiTIKI · 24/10/2018 19:46

I've never been to one of those parties but if I was invited I would go along with it and be excited! I had a surprise with my baby and it was the only nice memory of the birth. If I had another baby, I might find out the sex before the birth so that I can enjoy the time of finding out as you never know how birth will go. Baby could be poorly and taken away before you find out the sex etc etc so not always a wonderful moment.

I can see why someone might want to have some fun with telling everyone the sex of the baby. I mean it doesn't matter what the sex is but it's exciting to find something out about your baby!

If I was having twins I might keep the news quiet until 20 weeks then find a fun way to tell immediate family. I'm not the party type though.
