Mnhq some of your members would like to discuss things that we are not happy with. Can we please have an adult discussion without this thread being deleted?

"Interesting first post" absolutely is troll hunting though. There's no other reason to post it whatsoever.

But it’s not the same as “you are lying you lying liar.” That’s my point, that MNHQ will delete that sort of thing for troll-hunting rather than say “well they’re not outright accusing anyone and gosh maybe they’re just a bit new here and thought this kicked off an interesting conversation, better not delete.”

With trolling, though, you can get red flags all over the place and still have the verdict being “well there’s no definite proof she’s lying however dodgy it looks, so we’re giving her the benefit of the doubt.”

53rdWay · 23/10/2018 17:11

give it up, Oswald, you goady goader.

Walking around with the virtual equivalent of a sandwich board saying PLEASE ARGUE WITH MY CONTROVERSIAL OPINIONS, PLEASE PLEASE I BEG YOU is a bit, though.

SoupDragon · 23/10/2018 17:14

But it is exactly the same as troll hunting. Trolls aren't just liars, they are often being deliberately goady or perverted. Of course they don't say "oh, maybe they're not really troll hunting" because they absolutely are.

53rdWay · 23/10/2018 17:18

I’m not saying “oh maybe they’re not troll hunting”, Soup. I’m saying that the standard of proof for an accusation of troll hunting is “beyond reasonable doubt”, while the standard of proof for trolling seems to be “must be absolutely 100% definitively established in a way that nobody could ever dispute.”

SoupDragon · 23/10/2018 17:20

And I'm saying that it is always 100% obvious someone is troll hunting. There is no doubt.

53rdWay · 23/10/2018 17:21

For example: I bet me calling Oswald a ‘goady goader’ there would get zapped if it was reported. Meanwhile, Oswald here gets to name himself after a fascist philosopher who greatly influenced the Third Reich and trip merrily through AIBU posting “well I think you should get back in the kitchen and make your husband dinner” comments, unobstructed by moderation because we wouldn’t want to accuse someone of trolling now would we.

53rdWay · 23/10/2018 17:24

It is not 100% obvious, Soup. It is a reasonable conclusion to draw from comments like “interesting first post” or “welcome to MN, OP!” But the very reason people do that is to have some level of plausible deniability while tipping other regulars off to what they’re implying. Otherwise they’d all just say “you’re lying/a pervert/whatever.”

SummerGems · 23/10/2018 17:28

While troll hunting is always obvious though,I’m not sure that all troll hunting would be worthy of deletion. So e.g.

Many years ago there was a poster who posted that she’d been assaulted by her partner and had then gone into premature labour. Drama unfolded, rushed into hospital, gave birth to tiniest baby ever, baby fighting for life and pictures appeared. Posters had been reporting the thread for days and been told that it was believed to be genuine. then another poster did a google image search on the pictures and it turned out that they were pictures of the world’s smallest baby or something. She posted a link to the website where she’d found them. So poster was 100% obviously a troll...

Should that “troll hunting” post have been removed? Especially when you consider that at night threads aren’t removed for instance so the trolling rumbles on and on, sometimes with donation pages being set up for the cause and so on... If it’s an obvious troll not just because of the potential red flags but because e.g.the photo’s have clearly been lifted from google should the troll hunter be the one who is banned?

summergems

That’s awful! People are so twisted

SoupDragon · 23/10/2018 18:32

*It is not 100% obvious, Soup.G

🙄

SoupDragon · 23/10/2018 18:33

I'm out. It's pointless.

crispysausagerolls · 23/10/2018 21:22

Another thread has just bitten the dust due to reports

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/10/2018 22:00

Which one now crispy?

SmileEachDay · 23/10/2018 22:08

It’s the Internet. The Internet is full of people you don’t know, many of whom aren’t exactly who they say they are.

MN run it as they run it. It’s not a public survives and it’s down to individuals users to use with caution - as with the rest of the Internet.

crispysausagerolls · 23/10/2018 22:13

GreatDuckCookery

The one where her granddaughter 6yo wasn’t invited to sons wedding - fail to see what reports could’ve been about that one fml

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 24/10/2018 17:06

Oh that one. I cba with it, too many sons, daughters, DIL and SILs. Grin

Troll then?

crispysausagerolls · 24/10/2018 18:18

I don’t know but if it was a troll, it wasn’t a very interesting one 😂

stickystick · 24/10/2018 19:12

This may not be the right time or place to mention it, but my S did in fact have bloaty head syndrome. And no, they don't treat it with valves....

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 24/10/2018 19:29

Oh. How come it was deleted crispy? Bunfight?

crispysausagerolls · 24/10/2018 19:47

I think the MN notice said they had suspicions about it!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 24/10/2018 19:59

Ah gotcha.
