Simon Mayo is leaving radio 2. AIBU to think he's been pushed out?

Many people protested against Jo Whiley joining the show but obviously the BBC don't care what we think 🤬

LittleLionMansMummy · 27/10/2018 08:36

It wasn't a popular move putting them together and the BBC bear the responsibility for that. Separately, I like them both. Together, it didn't work. Nonetheless, Simon Mayo himself has said No is a good and loyal friend to him. He also said it's not ok for people to make personal attacks on her. He seems like a decent man some people on here would do well to listen to.

JobbyBum · 27/10/2018 08:41

Send Nihal Arthanayake to do the show in R2, then at least I won’t have to listen to him on R5

fuckwitseverywhere · 27/10/2018 10:29

*Steve wright is still there with his “big show”. How does he do it?

He must know where a lot of bodies are buried.*

...This!

Also it is unfair to blame Jo. I liked her previous show. She is a muso not a personality like others have said.
I love Simon though, I'm gutted he's going but I haven't warmed to the new format. I loved Matt, and I was also sad when they got rid of Rebecca Pike years ago.

My money is on Sara Cox and I can't stand her so I won't be listening.
Liza Tarbuck would be a massive mistake. She witters too much.
Maybe Bobbi Prior could be given a shot. I always enjoy her input

It does seem that the right replacement cannot be a middle aged white man, regardless of who is best for the job. Kind of like reverse misogyny. Which really defeats the object. It's wrong to employ or not employ someone because of an accident of birth. I get the whole diversity thing, that there needs to be a wide mix but it shouldn't be involved in the recruitment process for any role. The best person is the best person!

Riversleep · 27/10/2018 10:50

I think it's a bit selfish or Jeremy Vine to have carried on after he got The Wright Stuff. It's like bed blocking. He got made to take a slight pay cut and 'had' to take a second job? If you don't want to do it for the pay then let someone else have a go. I'm resigned to Steve Wright being taken out in a box.

Deliphant · 27/10/2018 11:06

Agree it's unfair to blame Jo.

And also agree that Bobbi is good - and does seem a waste to limit her to traffic.
Re steve Wright - yes can't believe his longevity! And his pay! When the whole BBc pay thing came out Janet street Porter wrote that it basically comes down to people's agents and how good they are at negotiating - he must have a bloody good agent.

And the fuss generated when Chris Evans announced he was leaving radio 2 - you would think someone had died. He is (now, wasn't in the 90s) the very epitome of smarminess - every guest is gushed over. I like Simon Mayo because he is not like that.

The only other R2 presenters i really like are Graham Norton, Alan Carr and Mel Sykes and Danny Baker.

Deliphant · 27/10/2018 11:10

Yes I like the phrase bed-blocking! Jimmy Young (ironically Jeremy Vine's predecessor) was retired from his show at the age of 81, and he went with such bad-grace. He was 81 FGS - and he couldn't be grateful or see that it was time to give someone else a chance!

And he got another show anyway..

derxa · 28/10/2018 10:19

Send Nihal Arthanayake to do the show in R2, then at least I won’t have to listen to him on R5 Oh my god he's painful. He takes woolly liberal leftism to new heights. Not that I'm against woolly liberal lefties per se. I just suspect he doesn't really believe in any of it.

ChoccyJules · 28/10/2018 10:41

Oh please take Nihal.
What I dislike the most is he says ‘we and you (the latter meaning us the listeners)’ all the time, whereas good presenters at least act as if we’re all on the same level. Sir Terry and Chris Evans are examples of this, whatever you think of Chris, who I know is marmite.

TheKitchenWitch · 29/10/2018 13:50

So, as expected, Sara Cox has got it.

I'll give it a go - it surely can't be worse than the disaster of Jo and Simon together - but she always puts me in mind of a children's presenter, I somehow can't really take her very seriously, so I suspect it won't be my thing.

All change....

Jeanclaudejackety · 29/10/2018 13:52

Radio 2 is shite anyway all you people getting worked up over it are quite hilarious, just Bluetooth your Spotify off your phone and listen to podcasts or your own music library like a normal person!

cardibach · 29/10/2018 14:03

Jeanclaude I do that. I also like to listen to radio sometimes to hear music I haven’t heard of orsome interesting interviews (maybe with people I wouldn’t have thought to look for in podcasts).
Kitchen yes - she sounds really childish t me, and her features are really annoying when she covers breakfast - Strictly Mum Dancing for example. Great radio feature...

StrippingLLamaWhisperer · 29/10/2018 14:05

I listen to radio for bantz, not music? Cant believe they replaced chris evans with the female chris evans, zoe ball. Wowww pysh the boat out r2 Hmm

Glad cox is in.....how the hell does steve wright do it though - awfuuulllllllll!

drivinmecrazy · 29/10/2018 14:07

FWIW I think if nothing else it's fantastic that women now have 3 of the prime time daily shows on radio 2.

Radio 2:
The good....
Whiley, Mayo, Norton, Maconie,
Ball, Feltz, Radcliffe

The bad.....
Carr, O’Leary, Evans and Vine all make me switch off instantly. Evans was great when he first moved across but utterly cringeworthy now

overnightangel · 29/10/2018 14:20

Tarbuck is horrendous too

overnightangel · 29/10/2018 14:21

And Steve Wright is horrendous also .
Think that covers it!

Cambalamb · 29/10/2018 14:47

Love Steve Wright silly boy!

Cambalamb · 29/10/2018 14:48

Auto looks libellous to me!

Cambalamb · 29/10/2018 14:50

Happy it's Sara on Drive Time. Would still have preferred Simon and his old team.

AutoFillUsername · 29/10/2018 15:23

Gosh I hope not Cambs, I will get it deleted.

A580Hojas · 29/10/2018 19:27

I'm really uncomfortable with the level of vitriol that has been aimed at Jo Wiley by some posters on Mumsnet just because they are upset about their beloved gettingalittledull Drivetime show.

This from Gabsalot being a prime example: "jo wiley is an annoying arselicker and thins shes so down with trkids"

But I guess Jo could probably put together a more legible post.

The show has grown on me and now I'm a bit sad they are both going.

Shan't be listening to Sara Cox.

Totally agree about Jeremy Vine "bed blocking" - greedy fecker.

A580Hojas · 29/10/2018 19:29

@Deliphant - what show does Danny Baker do on R2?

A580Hojas · 29/10/2018 19:32

I don't mind Steve Wright. He is brilliant at interviews.
