Simon Mayo is leaving radio 2. AIBU to think he's been pushed out?

Many people protested against Jo Whiley joining the show but obviously the BBC don't care what we think 🤬

OP posts:

I quite like Steve Wright's show. I love the non stop oldies and find the whole show easy to listen to.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 22/10/2018 17:59

Oh god, really?! I've stopped listening to R2 when Steve "fuck off you are not funny" Wright's show is on. If Liza Tarbuck gets put on drive time I'll be avoiding that as well. Sara Cox on breakfast I might be able to suffer through cos I don't normally get to listen to breakfast.

I've been thinking there's a lot of music on recently that wouldn't normally fit to R2 so I'll probably just find a new station altogether. I do quite like Jo Whiley on her later slot, with parent taxi and general chatting about stuff.

@Cambalamb I wonder and think maybe Chris Evans works as he needs the discipline and routine of employment. It gives a structure to his day/life. I'm
sure I heard him say this once but maybe I am wrong and will stand corrected. Alan Sugar doesn't need to work either but he doesn't strike me as a man who could sit at home all day listening to Frank Sinatra and tending to his roses? That's sort of comparison! Chris is very creative and that creativity needs an outlet. I'm just putting that out there. Maybe Sara didn't want the breakfast show but I'd hazard a guess she did. She's a natural successor for that show. I wish she would just come out and tell us all what she really thinks/wants. As for Simon, I've listened to him since his breakfast show in late 80's/early 90's so it's very sad that he is leaving. End of an era and I do feel the changes to his Drivetime show were the final straw!!

PavlovianLunge · 22/10/2018 18:00

Jeremy Vine has to go surely. He makes my skin crawl! Get Vanessa Feltz in that spot. Far more intelligent , sensitive and articulate.

Couldn’t agree more.

LadyMargaretBeaufort · 22/10/2018 18:02

@TSSDNCOP yes, Steve Wright must know some serious dirt to still have that slot! 😂

cardibach · 22/10/2018 18:04

Steve Wright and Vanessa Fletcher are both annoying because they don’t listen to people they are ‘interviewing’. They think they are more important than anyone else. Can’t stand either of them.
Liza Tarbuck is just unfunny but thinks she’s great.
Sara Cox is childish and annoying with no sensitivity.
Don’t mind Zoe Ball, glad out of that shit show she’s got breakfast.
Simon Mayo was awesome before they messed with the show.

cardibach · 22/10/2018 18:04

Feltz* Stupid phone

LadyMargaretBeaufort · 22/10/2018 18:10

Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse need to do another Smashy and Nicey parody of this. TV comedy gold in the making!

rosablue · 22/10/2018 18:23

Maybe this is why Sara Cox didn't get the breakfast show - because they knew they needed someone for the drivetime show and so they're going to put Sara in to present that...

PawneeParksDept · 22/10/2018 18:29

It's not misogyny to dislike Jo Whiley, no.

It is misogyny to blame the actions of a man, Lewis Carnie, Head Of Radio 2, on a woman, a DJ who doesn't make corporate decisions.

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 18:35

Lady It's not the work ethic, it's the hours!

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 18:37

I like Tim Smith and Janey Lee Grace. Steve is so familiar- I'm late 40s and remember his Steve Wright in the afternoon show on Saturday on Radio 1.

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 18:38

I also saw Simon Mayo on the Radio 1 Roadshow with Miss Diane at Bournemouth in 1992. Those were the days.

BatFacedOK · 22/10/2018 18:39

Stupid thread OP. Honestly, people spouting 'facts' when err they don't know them. He posted something very to the point to try and stop people blaming her. Didn't work did it

ladydickisathingapparently · 22/10/2018 18:48

I like the Steve Wright show! Except when Jeremy Vine comes on to do his awful unfunny gags. And I like Ken Bruce and Popmasters.

I’ll get me coat.

Derwent19 · 22/10/2018 18:50

I am reluctant to post here given the thread title. This is not Jo Whiley's fault. Jo was Simon's first choice to work with on the new show. The fault here lies with the BBC for the horrendous decision to replace the old show.

Anyone who read Simon's tweets at the time and listens to his books podcast with Matt and an interview he gave on another podcast (can't remember which one) will know how much he disagreed with it and was upset by it.

For what it's worth I thought the new show had improved a lot and was quite enjoyable, but this news isn't a surprise. If Sara Cox takes over I may give it a listen, but if it's Liza Tarbuck, no chance.

At least we still have the great wittertainment and the books podcast with Matt which I enjoy a lot..

NerrSnerr · 22/10/2018 18:59

@ladydickisathingapparently it's not really Jeremy Vine doing the jokes on Steve Wright, it's an impressionist.

Bluntness100 · 22/10/2018 19:02

Agree, I take issue with women who attack other women for no reason. It's one thing to not like jo whiley for her presenting style. But this is something else.

LadyMargaretBeaufort · 22/10/2018 19:02

@Cambalamb possibly. Fair point. We ultimately don't know her financial position so maybe she would need to take contracts based on what they paid rather than what the hours were. As jobs go the breakfast show is not a bad one if the money was good! Perhaps Jo was the same, mouths to feed etc, work is work. I think it's unfair the slack Jo is getting, she was just taking care of business and more power to her. Good luck to her moving forward.

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 19:04

It's one thing to not like jo whiley for her presenting style. But this is something else.

No one has attacked her for being a woman! It's her presenting style they dislike!

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 19:06

I tried to like Jo when she joined Simon. I gave her another chance but no, still don't like her style.

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 19:07

OP get thread title changed!

OutragedEtc · 22/10/2018 19:10

Plenty of people don’t like Jo Wiley’s presenting style. Plenty of people are sad that Simon Mayo is leaving. It’s okay to say both of those things.

It’s not okay to unfairly and incorrectly jump to the conclusion that she is the one responsible for his departure and has ‘got what she wanted’. That may not be misogynistic but it’s definitely spiteful imo.

crosstalk · 22/10/2018 19:25

Meanwhile, at the BBC, they have spent 4.4 million in one year alone on outside consultants part of which is to advise them on the gender pay gap scandal. You would think the millions they pay on HR would give them that sort of advice, but no

I'm with Outraged - you can object to changes to presenters, but blaming it on them is unfair. And clearly Simon liked Jo and actually spoke up about the fact he found it appalling she was so badly trolled by numpties when it's a BBC management decision.

Cambalamb · 22/10/2018 19:30

Outraged OP has already said she regretted the title as she didn't know Jo was leaving too.
