To think this racist should have been kicked off this RyanAir flight?

I’m not going to repeat the language this passenger used here, but basically he refused to sit next to a black passenger resulting in her being moved and staff asking the man if he was OK once she was moved.

RyanAir have released a terse statement saying it’s been referred to Essex Police

Awful awful awful, poor woman!

From watching the video it looked to me like he might have some mild learning difficulties (not that that in any way makes his behaviour ok) and I wonder if that is what made the staff reluctant to intervene more strongly?

IStandWithPosie · 21/10/2018 13:34

This man will have behaved like this before. People will recognise him and have experienced similar shit from him.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 21/10/2018 13:37

RangeRider, Point me to exactly where I said this man was autistic, or where I said it was OK for an "autistic person" (not a phrase I would ever use anyway) to be racist?
You're just making things up extrapolating. I made an observation, as did FoxFoxSierra, actually. No judgement, no excuses, just an observation.

VenusInSpurs · 21/10/2018 13:37

Rousette, the delays and lost take off slots would have cascaded to other flights that day, causing problems and upset for hundreds of passengers. The profit margins on budget airlines are really tight, and that is their selling point: the people who use Ryan Sir do so for the low costs.

When we buy into a low budget we buy into a level of service. (Or lack of).

But the cabin crew definitely needed to deal with him as the difficult / offensive passenger and move him pending police involvement in landing.

jillowarriorqueen · 21/10/2018 13:38

It is truly outrageous. I thought it must be a staged incident or weird stunt at first. WTAF???? They should have got him off the plane asap. Vile twat.
I cried when I watched this. And I don't usually cry much, but it made me so sad and angry at the same time.
I hope the lady is ok.

maxthemartian · 21/10/2018 13:41

Should have chucked the horrible cunt off the plane mid flight.

WickedGoodDoge · 21/10/2018 13:44

RyanAir have spoken to the BBC: Ryanair told the BBC: "We operate strict guidelines for disruptive passengers and we will not tolerate unruly behaviour like this.”

Yeah, they clearly didn’t tolerate it on this occasion.

Truly awful. I’m glad some fellow passengers tried to help.
There should be a zero-tolerance policy to these sort of incidents where if anyone uses racist language they should be thrown off the plane.
I do think the current state of the world (trump barely admonishing racist events, rise of alt right in the mainstream, rise of vocal anti immigration feeling) means these people feel emboldened and no longer afraid to share their bigotry.

WickedGoodDoge · 21/10/2018 13:46

Sorry, I wasn’t being fair there. The rest of the quote is: "We will be taking this matter further and disruptive or abusive behaviour like this will result in passengers being banned from travel."

Still too little too late, IMO.

Sp-arkle I totally agree with you.

GreenLantern53 · 21/10/2018 13:48

woah just watched that video wtf!!!!

Wingedharpy · 21/10/2018 13:59

To all the people saying cabin crew should have moved him, would you want to sit next to him?

GreenLantern53 · 21/10/2018 14:04

the point is he didnt want to sit next to HER because she was black, they fulfilled his wish by removing her. she obviously asked to move when it was clear they werent going to move him, he is definitely the one that should have been moved.

ThatssomedeadbratCarrie · 21/10/2018 14:05

Even withough the disgusting racist language he physically threatened a disabled woman. Said if she didn’t move he would drag or kick her to another seat.

Hope he is arrested and although i’m sure Tommy Robinson will pay his legal fees.

Roussette · 21/10/2018 14:06

Yes, she was moved because an arsehole like him was making her uncomfortable. He should've been moved. To outside of the aeroplane with a policeman either side of him.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/10/2018 14:08

Excellent, balanced posts, VenusInSpurs I'm another who wonders why they didn't move this ghastly man elsewhere, though maybe they thought he'd kick off again if they tried and settled for the least disruptive solution, leaving consequences (bans, police, etc) to follow on later

It's tempting to think he should have been chucked off for what he did to the poor lady, but let's not kid ourselves ... if passengers had missed connections or whatever because of the delay that would have caused, Ryanair would no doubt be slammed for that too

Volant · 21/10/2018 14:13

I’m sympathetic to people who didn’t step in

I'm not, really. I know it's all to easy to say what you would do in hindsight, but as a minimum I think more people should have joined in asking for him to be taken off the flight or at least arrested on landing. The attendant just seems to have been desperate for a quiet life.

As for the question of other passengers not wanting to sit next to this man - the norm with other disruptive passengers is to put airline staff next to them and restrain them if necessary.

makeitsol · 21/10/2018 14:20

His intellectual or SN status is irrelevant
He could be ANYTHING as well as racist what matters is that he is a racist and for that reason alone should have been removed from the flight
I have asd myself. Being a racist is a whole separate thing to any other ‘condition’

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 21/10/2018 14:33

The passengers on another recent flight banded together to stop takeoff when a man who was being deported was being forcibly boarded. So it can be done.

Aeroflotgirl · 21/10/2018 14:50

The lack of reasonable response by Ryanair is dreadful.

VenusInSpurs · 21/10/2018 14:57

“The passengers on another recent flight banded together to stop takeoff when a man who was being deported was being forcibly boarded. So it can be done.”

Yes, a man who turned out to be bro g deported for a series of gang rapes...

It may be that airlines DO take the oath of least resistance / de-escalation because a plane cabin is not a safe place for any kind of physical violence to take place. However obnoxious a passenger is being verbally they cannot risk a fight breaking out because there is nowhere for innocent bystanders, including children, of women etc to disperse to.

That MIGHT be why some passengers declined to intervene. The man who did so was assertive, direct and confident and not insulting, inflammatory or provocative. The Cabin Crew should have taken his example. And it is a shame that more people didn’t calmly ask the cabin staff to move the man and deal with him.

It’s hard to watch this stuff, it makes us sick, it makes me boil with anger, but loads of keyboard warrior ‘I would have...’ , watching from a safe distance might make us feel better in watching the footage, but doesn’t necessarily help in the situation.

My family are not white, by the way.

FoxFoxSierra · 21/10/2018 14:58

makeitsol I can't see where anyone has said any different? The point I was making was that if the airline were aware that he had LDs then that may be why they didn't kick him off the plane, for fear of being accused of discrimination towards him because of his disability. I'm not agreeing in any way with them, they clearly got it wrong, I'm just trying to understand the mindset of the people who didn't intervene. I don't think anyone mentioned autism either other than those who jumped on a previous poster

BewareOfDragons · 21/10/2018 15:03

IF they weren't willing to throw him off out of fear of hours of delays for everyone else, then he should have been greeted at arrival with a police escort off the plane and charged for his racist abuse and banned from RyanAir in future.

Everyone could have given statements then, without endangering setting off an even greater volatile situation on the plane.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/10/2018 15:06

Absolutely

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/10/2018 15:12

Once again very well put, Venus. Sometimes a more measured approach - with appropriate sanctions following on - brings better results in the end. It might even bring more justice for the horribly abused lady than a mass row which the shouters would probably forgot once the excitement was over

Pitchfork waving's all very well, but can lead to the sort of situation you mentioned with the gang rapist's deportation being delayed - hardly a good outcome for anyone
