To ask if everyones hair is a bit shit without styling?

Mine is awful! Quite coarse and lank, I was bitching to my mum about it and she said its because i just wash and condition and then leave it to airdry.

She reckons most peoples hair needs at least a little product and to be at least blow dryed to look decent.

Mine looks awful without styling (either professional blow dry or me straightening it). It’s not in bad condition, I just have lots and lots of quite then fly away hair (but overall very thick hair).
I know people whose hair just seems different who I have never seen looking bad so I suspect they don’t need to do much to make their hair smoother.

amusedbush · 20/10/2018 10:19

My hair is very curly but if I just leave it I look like fucking Hagrid. To get it looking like a proper curl I need to wash, condition, rinse, add more conditioner to leave in, carefully apply gel without disturbing the ‘clumps’ of curls and then diffuse for a hundred years until it’s totally dry.

If I want it straight I need to blow dry it with a round brush and then run the straighteners over it to remove frizz.

‘Wash and go’ I am not Hmm

amusedbush · 20/10/2018 10:21

Without styling I would look like a seal.

Sorry, this made me laugh Grin

CookPassBabtridge · 20/10/2018 10:30

It used to feel quite coarse but I finally found the perfect shampoo and conditioner for my hair (oily roots/dry ends) and it's so silky now that I rarely style it!

BrightLightsAndSound · 20/10/2018 10:34

Well my hair looks like imagine if you made a john lennon wig out of horse hair and then left it to dehydrate in the sun

I hate my hair with an absolute burning passion! I have loads of it (or I did, see below) It's naturally curly. Actually rephrase, it's naturally frizzy. I look like Monica out of Friends if there is even the slightest bit of damp! It takes me an hour to do my hair properly, diffuse it and coax the frizz into curls! The underneath can go lovely but the top layer looks horrific. I've tried all sorts, including the Curly Girl Method.
When I straighten my hair I feel more polished and sleek instead of looking like The Wild Woman of Wonga!
But I've been through a couple of hard years and my hair is really suffering. It seems to be snapping and falling out. Which, considering how much I hated it, I'm quite upset about!

Athena51 · 20/10/2018 11:20

I have very, very thick wavy hair. If I left it to air dry it would take hours. I use product and dry it with a diffuser. It looks amazing when the hairdresser blow dries it but I can't do it myself.

Basically I've had to learn to love the 'casually tousled 'look (dragged through a hedge backwards if you prefer).

Snog · 20/10/2018 11:28

I think the secret is to go with a style that works with and not against your natural hair. So no straightening or curling required.

I have a shortish sharp cut bob, and have dead straight hair, so it looks good washed and left. Looks slightly better if blow dried. I do get it cut regularly though.

Please share! This is my hair exactly.

I look like I've been electrocuted if I don't blow dry my hair.

However I have a friend who never uses conditioner, goes to bed with her hair wet and wakes up with perfect silky waves. There's always one Grin

Amaaboutthis · 20/10/2018 11:37

Left to dry naturally my hair is a thick coarse frizz ball. 5 minutes with the GHD’s or Babyliss big hair and it’s shiny and swingy. I have hair which is thick, straight underneath and neither straight nor wavy on top. It’s not a good look left to it’s own devices

dawnacorns · 20/10/2018 12:12

I'm amazed at how many people on here don't have to style or blow dry their hair Shock I would look deranged if I just left mine to dry naturally, it would look like a bad 80s rock star type vibe

BrynsPicasso · 20/10/2018 12:19

Mine is very thick and course. I either blow dry and straighten or 2 French plaits to air dry- loads of products for both! Left to do its own thing I look like Mrs Twit from Roahl Dahl

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 20/10/2018 13:38

Take heart peeps, even Hollywood’s finest can’t just wash and go as demonstrated by Julieanne Moore.

I often air dry because I’m a lazy slattern who doesn’t care that much, however the curly girl method in addition they lashings of leave in conditioner have meant I look less like Herminoe Granger during an electrical storm and my thick wavy hair is just about presentable to the world unstyled. I 1000 times better with a good blow dry though.

TotHappy · 20/10/2018 14:22

I'd also like to know, what is the perfect shampoo for oily roots and dry ends??

SpagBowl99 · 20/10/2018 14:38

Getting worse every year that I age Grin. Hey, could be worse things tho!

CookPassBabtridge · 20/10/2018 15:21

It's loreal elvive clay shampoo and conditioner in a light green container. My roots stay dry for three days and the length of my hair stays silky. My mum gave it to me as she didn't like it and I didn't try it for ages thinking I wouldn't either, and now I can't use anything else!

LaurieMarlow · 20/10/2018 15:35

Thanks cook I'll give it a go.

BingerGeer · 20/10/2018 15:49

I have pixie cut, very thick (but thinned by the hairdresser, to avoid triangularity), straight hair. I wash, maybe condition, and air dry. And it looks about the same as when the hairdresser faffs around with products and hairdryers and stuff. I think the cut makes a big difference.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/10/2018 19:14

Mines much better without styling- it’s long and wavy and thick and unruly, but I do quite like the bohemian wanton look. If I straighten it I look older I think. If I attempt to style it to its natural style but ‘polished’ iyswim it never looks as good. I have never once had glossy or smooth hair though, but I’ve stopped aspiring to it!

I have terrible grey roots though so if I don’t dye it regularly (like every 3 weeks or so) I am in danger of slipping into Louisa Jameson /Rosa from eastenders territory with the silver stripe down my fringe.

Villanelle123 · 20/10/2018 19:15

Absolutely. My air dried hair is just ... wow

merrymouse · 20/10/2018 19:19

Straight, medium thick hair in bob. Styling makes very little difference, but needs a good cut regularly.

TooManyPaws · 20/10/2018 19:39

I wash mine and leave to air dry. Once it's dried, I comb through and it's shiny and bouncy, rather than looking flat and dull with a drier. Mine is fine so I've learned that no styling will ever last longer than around half an hour, even done by a professional. It's now waist-length with a fringe and I let the natural waves go where they like. It looks much better than 30 years ago when I was 27 and still trying to style it.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 20/10/2018 19:48

My hair looks best when I've just got up in the morning! I have a short asymmetric Bob style - chin length on one side, shaved to grade 3 on the other. I wake up in the morning and it looks perfect - soft, glossy, just enough natural oil that it isn't greasy or too clean that it's all slidey and needs products to keep it in the right place.

I wash, towel dry and at most style with fingers. I've never dyed, never blow dried and haven't used a hair brush on it for about 3 years.

Hairdresser always comments on how healthy it is.

UnleashTheBulsara · 20/10/2018 20:38

I tried that clay shampoo and it didn't work for me at all. It felt like that time we demolished a chimney and my hair was full of brick dust...

Mine is fine and frizzy. If I don't straighten it (so thankful for GHDs) it looks like Crystal Tipps within moments of stepping outside. Using the straighteners make it smoother and swishier, at least for a while. But it's oily so needs washing, blow drying with a hollow round brush and products, then the straighteners - every single day.

The worst of it is, it behaves so badly for me, and won't do a thing I say, but when the hairdresser does the blow dry, it's so obedient smooth and shiny and stays like that for the rest of the day with no further attention WHY can't I do it too

StormCloudsDoClear · 20/10/2018 20:48

Mine isn't shit without styling I would say. I personally prefer it sharper and straightened though, but will happily wear it naturally un-styled too.

I have naturally thick celtic chestnut brown hair with streaks of auburn. It has a natural wave and slight curl in it. It is shoulder length.

I can wash, condition and air dry it and it just falls in to loose curls and waves looks ok to me. DH prefers it natural to when I get the straighteners out he loves running his fingers through it and playing with the curls 😂
