To ask if everyones hair is a bit shit without styling?

Mine is awful! Quite coarse and lank, I was bitching to my mum about it and she said its because i just wash and condition and then leave it to airdry.

She reckons most peoples hair needs at least a little product and to be at least blow dryed to look decent.

I used to think that styling and product were the key, then I found a hairdresser who could cut hair...and do it well! Now, as long as I shampoo and condition, I can leave my hair to dry and after a quick brush, I'm good to go (unless I want to put my hair up).

Saracen · 20/10/2018 00:30

Mine used to need a lot of effort to look decent, until I finally discovered the right haircut. Now it is very easy. I will never change hairstyles until the day I die, and my hair had better not change.

My sister, whose hair is COMPLETELY different from mine, also struggled with hers until she found the right haircut. Then it looked fabulous and required no styling. Unfortunately in her case the right haircut needed considerable skill to execute, since her hair is super curly. The right haircut was also quite short, so she needed frequent trims, and it was just too expensive to continue.

AutumnEvenings · 20/10/2018 00:32

Curly hair is a nightmare to manage. When going to work early in the day, I just wash my hair under the shower and use conditioner then hair serum with a quick blow dry at the fringe.

On days off I leave it and wear a shower cap to allow it to recover.

Both my kids have the family curly hair, although DH is straight. My son keeps his very short, so wash and go. DD uses straighteners and products when she is going out, otherwise it is long enough to pull into a bun for work.

Like, ancient cavewoman crone shit.

Sorry for laughing at this but it really did make me snort!

If I don't dry my hair (fine but lots of it) it looks lank and a bit greasy. Even just 5 mins dried upside down makes a huge difference. Looks a lot more shiny and has a bit of volume.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 20/10/2018 00:45

You can’t leave it to air dry unless you are about 23 and beautiful.
If not what’s the bloody issue with using a bit of product and a fucking hairdryer ffs?
It only takes 15 mins to make yourself look reasonable

SecretWitch · 20/10/2018 00:48

The right side of my head generally looks fine, I don’t know what’s going on with the left. The hair on the left does not fall into soft ringlets but sort of has an odd barbed wire twang about it.

PlinkPlink · 20/10/2018 00:51

Leave in hair conditioner ... it's a fucking life saver for my hair. I have really long hair and it's super thick. If i don't condition it enough it goes super frizzy. Fly-aways everywhere. I use the loreal elvive red one. It's fab. Sometimes I blow dry. Sometimes I air dry. Either way it looks good.

PlatypusPie · 20/10/2018 01:19

My hair was always very fine - soft and shiny as a plus, but wayward and floppy without product and root lifting. When the grey started to come in, that hair was coarser, and gave support to the rest of the finer hair to a good effect. I also have a good colourist who makes it look like a natural dark blonde atm.

So, at the moment, I can just wash and let it air dry and it does look nice - bit of blow drying or tonging with some mousse on occasion if I am getting otherwise dressed up but it’s perfectly finejust leaving it - bouncy and shiny.

I’m aware that this interim happy state could change though, when the percentage of coarser grey rises. It seems to be following the pattern of my mother’s hair , so I think I’ve got another 10 years ofvery low maintenance wash and go.

corythatwas · 20/10/2018 01:28

I'm 54 and I don't even own a blowdrier. Hair thick and waves naturally, quick brush and a haircut two or three times a year is all it needs.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 20/10/2018 01:33

Mine's fairly short, quite fine & flyaway, & just gives up the ghost when faced with a dryer. Last time I let a hairdresser talk me into a blow dry it ended up looking straight, flat & so awful that I went home & immediately washed it again.

I usually wash it just before bed, give it a rub with a towel & let it dry overnight, then it's soft & curly when I wake up. It gets an argan oil mask once a week.

Outnumb3red · 20/10/2018 01:33

My hair is pixie cut too. Very fine and very soft. I don't use conditioner as it makes it too soft.
I use sea salt spray and a quick blow dry to give it some volume.
Looks shit if I don't

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 20/10/2018 01:34

Yes mines awful really. Slightly wavy, bit frizzy ugh. I have a loose fringe and if I don't blow dry it it just parts and fizzes. I look like a hairy biker.

AwdBovril · 20/10/2018 01:47

I've always had extremely soft, shiny hair. It used to be extremely long, now extremely short. I never used fancy products, just shampoo & conditioner. No-one ever believed me that I didn't use loads of expensive products in it. I never used to own a hairdryer when it was long (it's a faff with thick, thigh-length hair) & just go with the lazy way of air-drying. Great in summer, but in winter it's helpful to have a proper fire to sit near! Now it's short I just rub it with a towel.

SpamChaudFroid · 20/10/2018 02:00

PyongyangKipperbang - I have very fine hair and it just hangs, so I use the hair band curling method

Have just googled the above; thank you for imparting this
hair-sorcery, and it looks so easy!

OP, I usually just let my hair air dry and I find that using a good sulphate free shampoo and conditioner makes an awful lot of difference. Best one I've found so far is Pureology Smooth Perfection

cantquitebelieveit12 · 20/10/2018 03:25

You can’t leave it to air dry unless you are about 23 and beautiful what a load of shite

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/10/2018 03:30

Mine's awful. Thick and coarse. Not straight, wavy, or curly. Individual strands are each of those things, though.

Hideous without expensive products and half an hour of styling.

toherdoor · 20/10/2018 04:57

Wash, condition, once a week do a treatment in shower, blow dry, straighten with ghd. Looks shit unless I do that. I use keratin oil on it every day too.

notsurewhatshappening · 20/10/2018 05:17

I'm really lucky with my hair. Shoulder length layers. I was it, comb it and leave it to dry naturally- very rarely use a hairdryer to rough dry. It doesn't go frizzy, just looks good....other parts of my appearance aren't great though!

notsurewhatshappening · 20/10/2018 05:22

I'm not 23 or beautiful and my hair air dries really well!

WalkingInTheAir13 · 20/10/2018 06:26

Air dried mine looks like the sad love child of a string mop and a brillo pad!
That’s hilarious! 😂
Long live GHD’s - good hair days, eh @StillMedusa?

TheClitterati · 20/10/2018 06:37

I blow dried my hair yesterday for first time in ages and yes it looks about 100 times better than when it air dries.

I was starting to feel a bit blue about the state of my hair too.

dudsville · 20/10/2018 06:46

When I air dry I keep a bottle of afghan oil handy and every so often work a squirt through by hand. Otherwise it looks rough and tangles easily. I only do this on restful holidays or long weekends when I can give my hair a break from appliances.

NextInLine · 20/10/2018 06:52

If I don't blow dry mine it is so flat and lank it's awful. I don't do much else with it beside blow dry though.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 20/10/2018 07:15

Mine actually looks worse if I dry it with a hair dryer. It looks best if I tie it up when wet and then let it down when dry as it hangs well.

I think it looks best when I straighten it though but can never be arsed.
