A woman after my own heart - AIBU to think she's got it right?

I always skim read the BBC news app first thing every day and mentally note the articles to go back to read later on. But this one caught my eye. Whether you like her humour or not, I think she has the message right - and delivered in the right way, too. The YouTube clip is from Have I Got News For You, where she puts Ian Hislop's incredibly clumsy comments down with intelligence and firmness, and the other link is the actual article.

The clear embarrassment of Ian and the other panellist is rather good....!

AIBU to think - d'you know what? She's got this attitude of quiet and firm put downs in the bag - this is a damn fine way to challenge attitudes which don't recognise the rights of women and girls, which might actually be listened to.

I remember watching that and feeling so disappointed in Merton and Hislop sitting there smirking at her while she explained. No Brand went up hugely in my estimation on that episode.

*Jo Brand obvs

MissusGeneHunt · 19/10/2018 07:43

I've been a massive fan of hers for years and many a time had the piss taken out of me because of it - I care not, as here is an damn intelligent (and funny) woman speaking up calmly and publicly and saying - 'you're bloody wrong, it ALL matters'. I really do think Hislop looked totally humbled by her comments, and quite right too!

I love Jo Brand. That was brilliant.

MamaLovesMango · 19/10/2018 07:48

I remember this. She’s fabulous. Her books are also very good!

TanteRose · 19/10/2018 07:55

I've liked Jo allll the way back from when she did her stand-up Sea Monster act...she is totally and utterly fab

Oirobnooo · 19/10/2018 08:13

Yes I've always been in two minds about Hislop. Sometimes I find him urbane, intelligent and highly amusing: name drop klaxon I've met him briefly a couple of times and on both of those occasions I've found him to be all of those things and then some. Other times (like here) I just want to smash his smug little face in. Go Brand!

CurlsandCurves · 19/10/2018 08:17

Top woman!

Going off topic tho, i almost did a Miles Jupp and spit my coffee out at the ‘hold your chips while you throw up out the window’

Enko · 19/10/2018 08:18

I am not a Jo Brand fan but yes she handled that very well.

babswindsor · 19/10/2018 08:26

I've always loved Jo Brand

Ohyesiam · 19/10/2018 08:27

She’s a woman and a half.

I think Ian Hislop is open to being re-educated and seeing his privilidge for what it is. Paul Merton is lovely and very funny but you can see him switch off for “ issues” ,which is ok ish, but given that he’s in the public eye ( and seems to have his heart in the right place, so could probably say something aposite it’s bit disappointing.

MissusLuciferMorningstar · 19/10/2018 08:33

@Ohyesiam - I agree, I think Hislop is an intelligent and highly worldly man, and in this case I think he swallowed humble pie.

@CurlsandCurves - me too - the line was waiting to be delivered!

Yay Jo Brand, fabulous woman.

MissusGeneHunt · 19/10/2018 08:34

Name change fail above - only for the other thread about Halloween names!

Jo Brand is wonderful. Intelligent, perceptive and funny, fully aware of what its like to be a frumpy fat woman receiving more than her fair share of misogyny from both sides. I'm amazed that, in the Kardashian era, she has regular tv work and long may she last, a real person who's not afraid to say naff off to anyone.

ThanosSavedMe · 19/10/2018 08:44

Love Jo Brand. She said what I’ve been feeling for years so well. Ian Hislop was right in a way it isn’t a big thing, but all those tiny little seemingly insignificant things all added together are big and huge and make you feel terrible and Jo put it perfectly.

Miggeldy · 19/10/2018 08:45

Love her. Hislop and Merton are knobs.

amandadecabernet · 19/10/2018 08:53

I think she's great but her patient explanations shows how low we set the bar for men, even/especially clever lefties. She had to carefully explain that illegal harassment at work is wrong and a real problem for individual women as well as women as a group which makes up over half the population? I mean, wtf, how much longer do we have to keep saying it? (And she got a laugh and a big cheer, which is gravy as far as I'm concerned.)
The bar is so very low and yet they still have trouble grasping the concepts.

Cakemonger · 19/10/2018 08:54

I don't think Hislop or Merton get it at all. They never will - too privileged.

Love Jo Brand for this.

amandadecabernet · 19/10/2018 08:55

I'm so tired of the careful spoonfeeding of these concepts.

AjasLipstick · 19/10/2018 09:11

Get in Jo! Get fucking IN there! Love her.

KittyB52 · 19/10/2018 09:25

I bloody love her!

InfiniteVariety · 19/10/2018 09:35

I don't think Hislop or Merton get it at all

Hislop has been married for 30 years to someone who I'm pretty sure hammers the message home

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 19/10/2018 09:41

I sat and watched that on the night it happened, my head snapped up after Hislop said about it hardly being "high crime" because it reeks of male privilege.

Merton and Hislop both really disappointed me, especially after they flayed Angus Deayton alive after his sex/drug scandal infidelity and was so proud of Jo Brand for the way she calmly and firmly took him down. She is a fucking marvel imo!

MissusLuciferMorningstar · 19/10/2018 09:48

@amandadecabernet
"I'm so tired of the careful spoonfeeding of these concepts."

Do you mean that you feel she (or anyone) should be more 'forceful' (for want of a better word) in their message delivery? Sorry - genuine question, and I suppose almost comparing it to Suffragettes / gists (in terms of the way they fought). Do you feel this type of delivery doesn't get (us) anywhere?

MissusGeneHunt · 19/10/2018 09:53

Oh bugger - I simply can't get this name change thing right! Sorry @amandadecabernet - that's from me above!
