I only found out about this on Thursday before the deadline had changed so just raced through the One Click Response to make sure that I was counted.
Now that the deadline has been switched to lunchtime Monday I've had more time to think about it and assemble my thoughts into a (hopefully) structured email to my local MP.
Probably outing but hey - also the last bit only applies if you live in Scotland but over all it might provide a template for other people to adapt and send to their own MPs. There's still time to put a bit of pressure on them personally ;-)
Like any other sane person I have enormous sympathy for anyone who genuinely feels that they were born into the wrong body, I cannot begin to imagine their misery and and genuinely happy that there is now support, understanding and help available. Still not enough sadly but I do believe (hope) that it will continue to improve.
I do however have very grave concerns regarding the possibility of allowing people to randomly 'self identify' their gender as this would be massively open to abuse by every pervert going around. We have already seen examples of this in female prisons and also in grooming crimes. If these monsters are legally allowed to self identify then no man, woman, boy or girl will be safe because it cuts both ways, female stalkers and pedophiles exist too.
Womens' shelters that provide much needed safety for many, many women every year would legally have to admit men that have 'self identified' as female, how on earth can that be right or fair?
I have also just heard that the equivalent consultation in Scotland happened at the start of the year, closing in March. If so this is a disgrace as I have only been made aware of this possible reform in the last couple of days and so I apologise for contacting you at such a late date.
You are my MP and I am counting on you to be one of the MPs that is not going to be browbeaten into submission by a small but very forceful minority.
You must include your name and address to confirm that you live in your MP's constituency.
To find your MP you can use www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/ and pop in your postcode or
www.theyworkforyou.com/
That's a good way to find out how your local MP votes generally :-P
