To ask if you've lost weight, how did you do it?

I'm desperate, I'm miserable in the way I look and really need dieting tips to get me started. I lost the weight before but after pregnancies and miscarriages etc it's all creeped back on.

So if you found something that worked, what was is?

Thank you.

Exercise is great, that's a given, both for calorie consumption and building muscles that will help keep the weight off later.

But as I dislike dieting, I have food tricks: pile up the veggies, broccoli, greens, carrots. I bought a fryer that operates on hot air and little to no oil, great for broccoli and eggplants. That tastes much better than steamed, and requires no further dressing if you mix your vegetables with good tasty spices. It is also very easy and quick to cook.
Have always in your fridge celery, cherry tomatoes, carrots, cucumber if you like it, that you can snack on with impunity.
Have some bread in the morning, but wholemeal. If you want sugar, go for one nice expensive dessert once a week, or 1 or 2 squares of dark chocolate every day.
Lean meats as a basis, you need a lot of proteins, but focus on turkey, chicken, and pork loins.
Like for dessert, treat yourself sometimes, because you will not be miserable and this gets you on the long term overhaul of your diet.
Avoid processed food as much as possible, find easy recipe, stews, roasted vegetables, that actually require less time that we think to prepare. Once you have cut up the vegetables and started the cooking time, you can do something else.

My last advice (that was long!!) is to do only a weekly shopping. I do it online for convenience sake, and I make sure to buy only what I need, with a clear idea of what is going to be cooked. This helps me avoid the tempting processed food, and get me a very clear picture of the balance of my diet.

Keto, no snacking, I eat when I'm hungry and not by the clock, intermittent fasting, 20carbs or less per day, moderate protein and only fat that comes with my protein and cooking with butter, coconut oil and olive oil.

No fat bombs, bulletproof coffee, MCT oil, no adding extra fats for the sake of it. drink 2 litres of water per day with 1Tbsp of organic ACV, diet lite salt and Himalayan Pink salt to balance my electrolytes. I don't count calories but counting carbs tends to put my Daily intake to between 1000-1500 per day. Sometime I'm hungrier than others.

I've been steadily losing 0.8 pounds to 1kg per week. Started 1 July this year at 101kg I weigh myself once a week on Mondays and last Monday was 84kg. I'm aiming to get to between 64-60kg and see where my body settles best. No longer have carb or sugar cravings, I do very little exercise apart from walking and housework.

I turned 50 this year and I'm doing this to minimise the potential for type 2 diabetes and other obesity related illnesses.

I lost weight by running 20 miles every Saturday. I haven't changed what I eat. I enjoy all food including desserts and chocolate most days and never count calories.

It took a few months to be able to build up the distance but now I can do it fine. Takes about three hours.

If I have a busy day I just get up really early and do it before the day begins.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/10/2018 05:09

I am size 8 now.

sofato5miles · 18/10/2018 05:26

3,500 calorie deficit per pound of fat loss. It's tough. I have lost 18lbs over the last 12 months. Went up and down the first few months but have now figured out that, for me, portion control is key. I also try to do the 16:8 Rule.

My diet has also changed, half my plate is vegetables or salad. I drink at weekends only. Bizarrely, I now have the odd bottle of beer which I never, ever drank before. They are finite and measurable and refreshing. Not as strong as wine too.

Darkestnight · 18/10/2018 06:10

I lost 8 stone through slimming world

InDubiousBattle · 18/10/2018 07:02

I lost just over 3 stone at slimming world, but I didn't follow the plan very closely.

Don't do any 'diet thing' today that you aren't prepared to do for the rest of your life.

PoxAlert · 18/10/2018 07:23

Yes. Slimming world.

Lost over 3 stone. And for the first time in my life not gained it back.

Sillybilly1234 · 18/10/2018 07:24

5:2 works for me but exercise is critical.

You need to burn up more calories then you eat.

Smarshian · 18/10/2018 07:26

Lost almost 2 stone at slimming world and weigh less now than on my wedding day. Not followed religiously but just general principles- snack mainly on fruit/veg. Have at least a third of each plate veg, limit booze and choc.

bubbles092 · 18/10/2018 07:34

I've lost 4 stone with slimming world after o had my DS. However at least 1 stone I will be putting back on as I am abroad for just under one month and weight is slowly creeping back as I fly out next week and my membership has expired! No point renewing it until I come back. As soon as I am back, I will be going back to slimming world again and introducing exercise. I never want to be big again! Even putting a stone on terrifies me. I have a very poor metabolism so I gain weight very easily :(

Milliepede · 18/10/2018 07:42

For me, low carb works very well. I also restrict my calories too 1000 per day and 1200 on occasional treat days. When I first started restricting calories I thought that I was going to be eating rabbit food only but it is easy to do. I have full fat everything as fat is very filling. I also started to religiously track what I was eating, I was horrifed at the amount of crap I was having. I have a sweet tooth, so do not deny my self the odd treat and if I want a snack have nuts of a small piece of cheese. Good luck

Milliepede · 18/10/2018 07:43

I cut down on the alcohol as well.

funmummy48 · 18/10/2018 07:49

Eat less sugar, stop snacking & eating "mindlessly", exercise more. Works for me.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/10/2018 07:55

Stick to 1200 calories and use myfitnesspal, allowing more 'normal' eating on a fri/sat

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 18/10/2018 07:59

To start: smaller portion sizes, thinking about what I eat more, walking more, having lunch OR dinner with the other meal much lighter- effectively a snack. Drinking loads of water & green tea. These are changes I've made to start to lose weight. I'm looking at either sugar free or 5:2 to step it up and going to see a PT. Now I've got going under my own steam, things seem achievable and maintainable, which makes a huge mental difference and I feel more comfortable and less self conscious.

I also don't beat myself up if I have a bad day food wise & I start again the next day. The more you try good habits, the more they just happen.

TheHoundsofLove · 18/10/2018 08:14

I really think that exercise is the key. I know that it is meant to be 80:20 diet:exercise (or something like that), but I honestly believe that exercise accounts for a much higher proportion of my weight loss. Admittedly, that might be because, without exercise (running and HIIT) I would have to eat such a small amount of food as to make enjoyable life totally unsustainable. But, I do obviously, still have to restrict my eating and find that 5:2 or 4:3 suits me best.
In fact, of all the people that I know, the only people who have lost weight and kept it off have either got quite obsessively into exercise or have done 5:2.
I'm losing weight fairly slowly, but it is, at least, sustainable. Whilst low carb, low calorie etc.. diets may promise faster weight loss, they are not sustainable for me and I found that they adversely affected my energy for exercise, which makes them doubly unsustainable in the long term.

MacosieAsunter · 18/10/2018 08:18

Cut out sugar, alcohol and fat meat.

Walk, a minimum of 15,000 steps a day.

5 stone 10 I lost in a year.

ladybranstonpickle · 18/10/2018 09:44

I lift heavy weights 3x week, yoga and spin 1-2x week. Track my food on MFP and keep an eye on carbs and calories. Aim to eat high quality, good food, lots of vegetables and fruit, high quality protein, very little sweets and junk although I am very partial to crisps and dark chocolate.

Don't drink much alcohol - possibly a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend, and try to opt for fizz as its fewer calories and smaller glasses!

I actually haven't lost a huge amount, but lifting weights has reshaped my body. My belly is finally although very slowly shrinking and I am seeing muscle definition on my arms and bum.

ladybranstonpickle · 18/10/2018 09:45

And I aim for 15,000 steps a day on my Fitbit.

dentydown · 18/10/2018 10:20

Stress - my son is refusing school and I am going to get into serious trouble
No biscuits
No sweets
Real (ground )coffee
Trying to keep food down to a pound a day to save money for Christmas
Plant food so potatoes instead of pasta

Also if I want chocolate I have to get off my arse and walk down the road to buy a single bar come back and eat it.

Walking everywhere as much as I can

tiggerkid · 18/10/2018 10:30

Gave up sugar and ALL snacking between meals. Lost a stone in just over a month. Still keeping it up and still losing weight. Actually feel better too.

Youshallnotpass · 18/10/2018 10:44

Myfitnesspal
5:2 (5 days set to recommended resting rate calories)
Lots of resistance training (sod cardio)

Ta1kinpeace · 18/10/2018 14:06

Assuming that OP will come back ....

The motivation to lose weight and keep it off is very simple
Extra Years of Healthy Life

Getting your Body Fat percentage within healthy levels
Getting your waist measurement lower than half your height
Getting your BMI well within the healthy band
Being able to balance on one foot for two minutes

Are all things that will allow you more HEALTHY years of life
by reducing your risk of
cancer
diabetes
stroke
heart disease
joint pain
all of which kick in hard once you get past 50

Lost5stone · 18/10/2018 14:10

5 stone so far. Another 1.5 until I'm at goal. Started with cutting complex carbs to once a day. Lost 3 stone from that. Then went to LCHF.
