to think DS' school knows something the rest of us don't about Brexit?

This isn't a trip for his year group but they are organising a language trip to an EU country by air, leaving on, guess what, 29 March!

I think they come back on 3rd April or thereabouts.

I am a bit surprised to say the least. Do they have inside information that there will be a deal? They've also got a EU trip planned later in April but that was organised months before all this latest no-deal furore, and another one in July, but I'd probably expect things to have been sorted out (to an extent) by then, although they might have to get visas for the British passport holders at shortish notice.

Leaving on 29th seems like playing chicken to me; the kids (and teachers!) might not be able to get back.

Are you hoping for a lot of disruption then talktotrees

I’m sorry but what are you talking about?

OrdinarySnowflake · 17/10/2018 19:13

I assume by the beginning of March if there's no deal in place, government will start earning against overseas travel, and things will be cancelled.

No deal means no transition period, as that would be part of any deal. No deal just means we stop being part of every treaty, including the ones covering air travel like the Open Skies one.

I really can't see no deal as an option because of this, but the government scarily do seem to be prepared to go with no deal. I'd like to think it couldn't happened, but the shower of shit in government might just do something that destructive in order to win the internal war they've got going on.

Where is Ghost with their "witty" one liners (soundbites).

FFs nobody is hoping for that. It would be horrendous. We are all hoping that someone sees sense and either delays things or else cobbles together some sort of deal.

It would be nice to think that there will be a further referendum but personally I think its pie in the sky.

surferjet · 17/10/2018 19:14

Op; be thankful they’re not flying in August when the French air traffic controllers hold their annual strike 🤣

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/10/2018 19:15

Just because someone thinks something might happen doesn’t mean they’re hoping that it will happen. Some people are seriously hard of thinking here Confused

serenmoon · 17/10/2018 19:17

They will also need to think about health insurance. EHIC won’t be valid.

wonderandwander · 17/10/2018 19:18

Storm. Teacup. There will be a deal an no impact on brits travel.
Someone at the school simply has their head screwed on properly.

Talkstotrees · 17/10/2018 19:18

And potentially travel insurance. Also outlined in govt notices.

Ta1kinpeace · 17/10/2018 19:20

Hi there surferjet
French Air Traffic control never stopped me getting to the USA

Not being in ANY of the deals the UK is currently party to will be a tad more disruptive

But then you already know that
and for the last 2 1/2 years have never come out with more than platitudes

ginghambox · 17/10/2018 19:20

Anyone who doesn't have travel insurance already is an idiot.

surferjet · 17/10/2018 19:23

French air traffic controllers fuck up 1000’s of flights & cause major disruption every time they decide to go on strike - which is often.
But that’s ok cos they’re French.

OrdinarySnowflake · 17/10/2018 19:23

It'll be a shitty time to travel though, even if there is a deal - flying after major rule changes (like no liquids, or airports having to scan every bag not 1 in 5, or suddenly having to take your shoes off), means big delays and lost luggage while the airport staff get to grips with a new way of doing things.

I wouldn't want to be supervising a school trip of excited kids stuck in an airport for hours when you aren't quite sure yourself of the new procedures...

KennDodd · 17/10/2018 19:25

I would suggest posters read this book. It's how Europe stumbled into WW1 (not comparing Brexit to WW1 btw) it's how something that nobody wanted ended up being sleepwalked into. I think we are heading to no deal.

Question for people who voted Leave. Did any of you want/think we would stay in CU & SM (if you even knew what they were) or did you vote wanting 'no deal'?

If you knew what they were is not an insult btw. I'd like to bet most people had no clue about them much before the referendum.

mantlepiece · 17/10/2018 19:26

We will not be leaving. There is no stomach for it at all. The discussions will be dragged out until we have all forgotten we voted in the first place.

We will never leave the EU

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 17/10/2018 19:27

"They will also need to think about health insurance. EHIC won’t be valid.

I have an annual travel insurance policy. One of its conditions is that I have an EHIC card. How will they sort that I wonder?

Ta1kinpeace · 17/10/2018 19:28

But Article 50 has been triggered.
29th March, the UK is out of the EU
with or without a deal

serenmoon · 17/10/2018 19:31

Most existing travel health insurance won’t be valid as the EU cover is currently based on covering what is needed as a top up after EHIC is used. Besides, many people do travel to EU countries with only EHIC.

user1981287 · 17/10/2018 19:32

TBH for most of us its fairly easy to take precautions against overseas travel disruption (unless you have to travel for work). You simply don't book anything until later in the year.

My focus is on food and essential household supplies. If we face supply chain issues due to delays at the borders and problems getting imported goods into the country, our supermarkets who operate just in time supply systems will be empty within days.

serenmoon · 17/10/2018 19:32

Sorry that was in reply to @ginghambox

surferjet · 17/10/2018 19:34

I don’t think we’ll leave either.
It will be dragged out until there’s another election & both parties will have a ‘shall we stay in the EU?’ mandate.
We’ll never leave.

Deadbudgie · 17/10/2018 19:35

Highly suspect someone is working on this!

MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 17/10/2018 19:40

Having said that, the issue isn’t that a country would stop british children to get back home. The issue is if they end up in a country illegally because they were supposed to have a visa and haven’t....

Is this a suggestion that the DCs could end up being incarcerated

Well what would the uk do with a group of teenagers accompanied by teachers who are illegally in the U.K.??
The fact you think they would be incarcerated is interesting actually. It supposed that’s what you would expect to happen here....

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 17/10/2018 19:41

I don't think we will leave either because it is unworkable. They will hold their hands up, say SORRY and blame the EU. A few people will get aerated, most will either heave a sigh of relief or not care.
