AIBU to ask how much debt you are in?

Having a conversation with DH about whether our debt is above average or not. Our household income is approx £40000. We do have a mortgage but don't want to focus on that more asking about credit cards and loans. We have a credit card with £3000 owed on it and pay £200 a month for our car. We hope to pay off the credit card within the next 12 months.
AIBU to ask how much debt you are in? And if you also don't mind saying what your household income is as well? As obviously being £3000 in debt when you earn £20000 is a lot different to someone who earns £100k.

We owe about £10,000 I think on car loans. Otherwise no debt. Our household income is probably about £55k ish, hopefully going up next year.

mimibunz · 14/10/2018 20:33

Household income about £75k, debt £2,000. We don’t run a car, though, so I think that helps.

calilark · 14/10/2018 20:33

Household income of just under 40k, from one earner. Debts of about 15k between us on credit cards, overdraft and a couple of 0% purchases (carpet and sofa), plus mortgage. My wage has only just gone up to 40k, so am looking forward to the next pay packet! Planning to start toppling the debts one by one over the next 18 months so we can look to move. We have equity in the house, so the other option is to move and use some equity to pay off the debts. But that is Plan B.

Rarfy · 14/10/2018 20:33

Im about 11k in debt now. Been on a dmp almist three years so it has come down considerably. I earn about 21k.

CoconutQueen · 14/10/2018 20:33

Absolutely no debt here other than mortgage. Family income approx 35k.

I can't get my head round how so many people are chucking money literally down the drain with interest charges on credit cards etc. I'm careful, I budget, if I want/need something new then I save up.

WipsGlitter · 14/10/2018 20:34

None. Amazingly. I was c£20k but managed to get out of it.

TickTickBoomBoom · 14/10/2018 20:34

I owe nothing, but I also have nothing. Single DM to DTDs who had to leave my ex with the help of the Women's Refuge, so on benefits whether I want to be or not.

But...I refuse to have a credit card as I won't spend money I don't have. I bought a cheap car cash. Everything I have is paid off. No debts whatsoever. If I can't afford it I don't buy it.

Verbena87 · 14/10/2018 20:36

Student loans and mortgage only here.

Merryoldgoat · 14/10/2018 20:37

About £4K loan and our Sofa which has a year left.

Household income of £80k (or will be again when I’m back from mat leave) - atm it’s just DH’s salary of £50k ish.

BarbarianMum · 14/10/2018 20:37

70k left to pay on the mortgage. No other debts. Household income around 45k

ifoundthebread · 14/10/2018 20:37

About 35k income and have debt of 18k-ish. That's the outstanding balance on a surrendered property and a couple of loans, all curtesy of my partner 😒 loans were before me and I pushed for him to surrender the property as I refused to raise a child there and we couldn't afford to run 2 separate houses

HellenaHandbasket · 14/10/2018 20:38

Hmmmm. One income of around £55k at the mo. Mortgage of £130k (less than 50% LTV), car on PCP at £200 p/m and an interest free card of around £4k. The latter was a car purchase needed for a new job, should be paid off by new year.

I don't like having debt, but it is manageable and we are in the thick of the expensive young child years. We are pretty frugal on the whole.

Merryoldgoat · 14/10/2018 20:38

We have credit cards but they’re empty.

MakeAHouseAHome · 14/10/2018 20:38

Aside from the mortgage no debt. But tbh that is just because of my spending attitude. I wouldn't buy somthing I couldn't afford outright (house being the exception!)

Japanesejazz · 14/10/2018 20:38

Only £135k, that’s my mortgage. Never had a credit card or a loan.

gamerchick · 14/10/2018 20:39

About 300 quid. Went a bit mad with my next account Blush. It'll be paid off in full soon.

When the Brexit vote happened and then watched what happened to Grainger games I got a bit twitchy with the credit cards so made paying them off a priority. Even if I'm wrong I don't even want to risk going there.

rainingcatsanddog · 14/10/2018 20:39

Just my mortgage. I live frugally (no holidays in years) and don't run a car.

MrsStrowman · 14/10/2018 20:40

None (excluding mortgage), we both have interest free credit cards but both are paid off, we tend to put larger purchases on them for the extra protections then pay off in full. Household income around £75k south esst. We both have older cars but own then outright, I'm very debt averse.

Grumpyoldblonde · 14/10/2018 20:40

Nothing now but have owed 25k three times in the past due to feckless ex.
I have to forget that and move on or I’ll twist myself mad at his stupidity.

Thank god he’s my ex.

MrsStrowman · 14/10/2018 20:41

We do live a comfortable lifestyle and holiday a couple of times a year, so we're not living like church mice to avoid debt

NoThatsNotMyName · 14/10/2018 20:41

I'm on mat leave and get smp and husband earns about 14k. We have a lot of debt.

lexi727 · 14/10/2018 20:42

No debt other than mortgage

shapeshifter88 · 14/10/2018 20:43

120k income and just mortgage debt, but thats 420k left so it feels huge.

RedBlu · 14/10/2018 20:43

Household income is just over £40k.

DP has no debt at all, I have about £5k on a 0% credit card. Hoping to get that paid off within the next year.

Lazypuppy · 14/10/2018 20:44

Household income £58k, i have £10k for my car, partner has about £8k left on his. Pay about £150 a month each. No other debts
