AIBU to ask how much debt you are in?

Having a conversation with DH about whether our debt is above average or not. Our household income is approx £40000. We do have a mortgage but don't want to focus on that more asking about credit cards and loans. We have a credit card with £3000 owed on it and pay £200 a month for our car. We hope to pay off the credit card within the next 12 months.
AIBU to ask how much debt you are in? And if you also don't mind saying what your household income is as well? As obviously being £3000 in debt when you earn £20000 is a lot different to someone who earns £100k.

£42k(ish) joint income. No debt barring mortgage. I paid off overdraft (lingering from uni days) a few years ago and have made sure I live in my means now. I was never great at that, DP is very frugal so I’ve learned a lot.

RavenLG · 14/10/2018 21:03

Saying that I desperately want the kitchen / dining room knocked through and extending so may look at getting a 10k or so loan if we can for that.

RobinEllacott · 14/10/2018 21:04

Nothing except the mortgage, but that's £200K so non-trivial!

Purpleartichoke · 14/10/2018 21:04

Aside from the mortgage, we have a couple of purchases on interest free accounts. We could pay them off, but it makes more sense to keep the money on our account. The only real debt is DH’s car. It is an interest free loan as well, but it is big enough that we wouldn’t be able to pay it off in one chunk tomorrow.

Fishcakey · 14/10/2018 21:05

Debt about 5k, household income 50k

OvO · 14/10/2018 21:06

Income of about £19,000 (very low compared to most of you!)

No debts
Mortgage paid off

TroysMammy · 14/10/2018 21:08

£96.44 which is my credit card bill to be paid off next month. No mortgage or loans. I live well within my means.

FabulousTomatoes · 14/10/2018 21:08

Approx 70k household income
120k mortgage (with a lot of equity)
£800 owed in interest free credit card which I plan to pay back in next few months.

BackAwayFatty · 14/10/2018 21:10

Income of 25k

On a mission to be debt free ASAP. Snowballing the first three & having them paid off by March 2019! After 10 years of debt, student debts, being a single parent, long stretch off work with depression, I'm finally sorting my finances out.

Credit card £900 (£300 per month)
Interest free credit card £2500 (£300 per month)
Overpayment of housing benefit £1000 (£100 per month)

Car £5000 (£150 per month over 3 years)
Overpayment of benefit £2000 (£50 per month)

speakout · 14/10/2018 21:10

Just mortgage.
No debt.

cloudtree · 14/10/2018 21:11

none and we paid off the mortgage this year too.

Observatorycrest · 14/10/2018 21:11

mortgage of 395k mortgage , we use a credit card but pay balance every month as the interest is ridiculous otherwise.... we have a very healthy income and a decent pension each

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 14/10/2018 21:11

No debt at all, mortgage all paid off, never had any other loans. Credit card paid off in full each month. DH kept a very tight rein on finances when we needed to, resulting in us being in a great position now.

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2018 21:12

No debt apart from our mortgage.

BlueberryMarshmallow · 14/10/2018 21:13

5k loan 4K car finance
I made silly choices when I was younger which I am just getting round to paying off.
Household income 68k

Moominfan · 14/10/2018 21:13

21k household 6k on car 2k on credit cards

eelbecomingforyou · 14/10/2018 21:14

Just the mortgage - about £150k. income £85k.

alreadytaken · 14/10/2018 21:14

Never had debts apart from the mortgage. When we couldnt afford something we did without until we could.

Namelesswonder · 14/10/2018 21:14

Household income £125k, debt around £1,000 ( changed job so got half a wage last month - will be made up with over payment this month so overdraft will be paid off). No car loans but about £750k on mortgages (our house and 2 rental flats - rented to students who want to rent and not buy before anyone jumps down my throat!)

serbska · 14/10/2018 21:15

Just the mortgage.

Faster · 14/10/2018 21:16

House hold income £23k. Single parent.
£4K on my car finance
£1322.37 on an interest free (for another 7 months) credit card which is getting £100 a month towards it. Will shift it to a different 0% deal when this one runs out.

BoomTish · 14/10/2018 21:17

Cannot understand how people get themselves in situations where they live beyond their means and get into trouble

Really? You can’t see how somebody suddenly becomes disabled, sick, redundant etc and a previously affordable mortgage/rent payment is a big burden but they’re unable to get out of it due to negative equity/contract?
Or two good incomes suddenly reduce to one when a relationship breaks down, or a child is born with needs that mean a parent has to leave work to care for them?

I hope life always remains so good for you.

Anyway, to answer the question-
Household income of just under £200k, and no debt. Managed to rack up a lot on a credit card when I was in my early 20s, so very averse to debt now, if I can avoid it at all.

Sowhatifidosnore · 14/10/2018 21:17

Salaries bring in £200k and have mortgage but no other debt. Grew up on the breadline though and really reluctant for debt other than mortgage.

Faster · 14/10/2018 21:17

Oh and the mortgage £56k

bananapuddles · 14/10/2018 21:17

Our income is about £35k a year (between me and husband), we each have around £30k in student loans and about £90k left on our mortgage.

So masses of debt (£150k!) but nothing in cars, credit etc.
