AIBU to ask how much debt you are in?

Having a conversation with DH about whether our debt is above average or not. Our household income is approx £40000. We do have a mortgage but don't want to focus on that more asking about credit cards and loans. We have a credit card with £3000 owed on it and pay £200 a month for our car. We hope to pay off the credit card within the next 12 months.
AIBU to ask how much debt you are in? And if you also don't mind saying what your household income is as well? As obviously being £3000 in debt when you earn £20000 is a lot different to someone who earns £100k.

OP posts:
TheWiseWomansFear · 14/10/2018 21:46

Household income is £52k, but we're on our first grad jobs and my pay is awful so should go up next year

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 14/10/2018 21:48

Only mortgage, no other debt, we earn 25000 between us but live within our means

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 14/10/2018 21:55

Income around £59k, no debt except mortgage and student loan.

edwinbear · 14/10/2018 21:55

wisewoman £55k student loan? I’m well behind the curve on student debt having graduated in 1996 and with DC of 9 and 6. But gosh - really is that the cost of uni these days?? My DC may need to reconsider, that’s terrifying.

RedDwarves · 14/10/2018 21:56

Aside from a mortgage, no debt at all. I bought my car outright, and have not got a credit card or any other personal loans. I've worked in Finance for many years, and, as a result of what I've seen, I am very debt-resistant.

Combined income of around $175,000 AUD.

Seafoodeatit · 14/10/2018 21:56

No debt other than mortgage, we used to have £2k on a credit card many years ago when DH's salary was low and varied month to month so needed topping up occasionally but was always fully paid off by the end of the year.

AndersArms · 14/10/2018 21:56

Household income about £75k. Unsecured debt of about £20k, plus large mortgage.

Harrassedhubby · 14/10/2018 22:01

Income £72k, unsecured debt 13k (cars & 3k loan to help with DW maternity leave)

HappyEverIftar · 14/10/2018 22:02

£90k on mortgage, double household income. We pay bits off in chunks.

averageisgood · 14/10/2018 22:02

Income @£60,000, single parent.
Debt is mortgage, and £90 overdraft, however savings £20,000 at the moment.

Osirus · 14/10/2018 22:03

No debt apart from mortgage of £165,000 (less than half the value of the property).

Income around £65k.

JaceLancs · 14/10/2018 22:04

Income 35k single householder
Large mortgage
7k car loan
4K credit cards

BoomTish · 14/10/2018 22:04

All these replies with ‘no debt’ why bother commenting? Surely op wants to hear from those with actual debt

In her post, the OP says she was discussing average debt with her husband, and wants to get an idea of whether theirs is similar to others. While a thread on MN is in no way scientific, or quantitative, it’ll be very skewed if only those with no debt reply.

BakerBear · 14/10/2018 22:04

No debt. Owe 330k on the mortgage.

Household income 198k before tax

Curious2468 · 14/10/2018 22:04

Household income 40ish but just mortgage debt. This is mainly due to an inheritance though tbh!

MattLeBlancVest · 14/10/2018 22:07

Household income 35k ish
Family of 4
No debt other than mortgage.

We buy second hand cars outright and are careful with the rest.

Debt panics me as I was in debt when I was single. Worked an extra job while I got it sorted.
Wouldn't have the time to do that now!

Donthugmeimscared · 14/10/2018 22:07

Income 10k single parent household and I ow £3000 which seems like loads in my current circumstances.

StarUtopia · 14/10/2018 22:08

Income £35k...debt..owe £3k on a credit card..owe tax credits (bastards) £1.5k (paying that off £20 a month) and still owe students loans about £9k.

Can't see how we will ever get out of debt tbh. We're not even home owners because we can't save enough and don't have a large enough combined income to get a £200k house (cheapest house within about 30 miles!)

simplysecondnature · 14/10/2018 22:09

Mortgage and just recently took out a 20k loan, credit cards get paid off in full every month.

zebrarobot · 14/10/2018 22:13

Just mortgage with £62k on it and £500 on sofa finance. Nothing else. Income around £26k.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 14/10/2018 22:15

None other than my mortgage which is fairly small (£70k now). Household income is about £45k with me being the higher earner and the house being mine (I bought it long before DP came on the scene). I'm actually quite proud of how hard I've worked, saved and budgeted to get where I am today and feel comfortably off with £7k of savings.

Sidalee7 · 14/10/2018 22:15

Household income of around 60k - I'm a lone parent.
Credit card debt of around 16 k but is on 2 0% interest cards which I pay way over the minimum charge and shift around every 12 months. One low interest bank loan of 4K.
Mortgage has around 250k equity.
I hate it but hopefully will be debt free in 5 years if I keep on track.

hamburgers · 14/10/2018 22:16

About £60k from a business loss. Income varies as DH self-employed but we will most likely pay this debt off within the next 6-8 months.

bellie710 · 14/10/2018 22:16

No debt, own our house and if we put anything on a credit card we pay it off at the end of the month income around £55k.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 14/10/2018 22:18

I owe 1.5K to Very and £100 or so to Next but have no other debt other than mortgage which has about 50K left.
About 220K household income.

But this is now, previously we've had about 20K debt and household income was 30K
We've also had household income of 0 and thought we'd lose the house.
