AIBU to ask how much debt you are in?

Having a conversation with DH about whether our debt is above average or not. Our household income is approx £40000. We do have a mortgage but don't want to focus on that more asking about credit cards and loans. We have a credit card with £3000 owed on it and pay £200 a month for our car. We hope to pay off the credit card within the next 12 months.
AIBU to ask how much debt you are in? And if you also don't mind saying what your household income is as well? As obviously being £3000 in debt when you earn £20000 is a lot different to someone who earns £100k.

We own our house outright and don’t have any debts.

DH is a real miser. All he ever talks about is the stock market ffs.

I have just asked him what our income us and he’s said negative. Apparently he’s buying shares because the markets collapsing.
I suppose that means our income will be doubly negative then.

It’s soooo boring.

Alarae · 14/10/2018 22:20

Household income of around 60k.

Currently 7k on 0% credit cards due to house move. Will have most paid off by Feb. Totally worth it as I'm in my forever home at 25. Even if the mortgage is sitting at 288k!

I also have student loans (19k) but I ignore that as a basic graduate tax.

Bimgy85 · 14/10/2018 22:21

No debt at the moment. Use credit card for holidays/nice things and pay it back in full each month. I find it very handy if I do want to treat myself or book a holiday and pay it off as I go with own wages.

BumbleBored · 14/10/2018 22:24

Wow. People on MN are rich!

Flatasapancakenow · 14/10/2018 22:24

About a grand that went on a credit card when a car unexpectantly broke done. Will be paid off in a month or two. £80k income. But recently bought our dream house so have quite a big mortgage for our age.

Coldilox · 14/10/2018 22:25

Household income about £60k

Owe just under £8k on a car loan. Other car owned outright.

Credit cards paid off each month, never carry a debt on them. Student loan paid off.

Mortgage around £100k

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 14/10/2018 22:25

Household income approx £75K (from one earner)
Mortgage of £180K (but that's only 30% LTV)
No CC debt as we pay it off in full each month (use it to pay for absolutely everything as it's a Tesco one and we earn lots of Clubcard points as a result).
We don't have any other borrowing except my outstanding student loan from when I did my teaching qualification last year (£6000).
We do have quite a bit in savings (maybe £60-70K if we scraped absolutely everything together) which we could use towards paying off the mortgage but we are considering upsizing soon and will need a sizeable chunk to pay the stamp duty and deposit :(

Prinstress · 14/10/2018 22:27

Fuck knows. About 10k? My head is throughout buried in the sand

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 14/10/2018 22:27

BTW - I drive a fairly old family car that's owned outright. DH's car is a company one so we don't pay anything for that (except company car tax of course)

FunkyChunk · 14/10/2018 22:27

Household income around 75k.

We have a loan and credit card totalling roughly 9.5k after buying a house that needed complete renovation. The credit card is 0% for 2 years but we hope to have paid off by then.

I'm comfortable with the amount, it's manageable for us and we throw any spare money at the credit card (around £400 this month compared to the £50 minimum payment).

We also have a mortgage of around £255k but are also overpaying that, £200 extra per month.

We do have savings and could pay off the debts, but I'm pregnant so it's important to me to build up the savings for mat leave at the moment.
DH's mum sadly passed away a couple of months ago, we will be receiving an inheritance of 20k soon. I imagine we will use some of it to lower the debt at that point.

Holidayshopping · 14/10/2018 22:34

Joint salary of £74,000. Mortgage has about 8 years to go as we’re overpaying but that’s the only debt. Cars (not new) were bought outright. I do have a credit card but pay it off each month-I just use it to get points with!

Peachsnowpop · 14/10/2018 22:37

£80k income and £31k debt not inc mortgage which is £150k. The debt consumes a lot of disposable income to service it each month and I am constantly stressed over it

MrsTommyBanks · 14/10/2018 22:38

I had none. I'm very debt adverse. I got into debt due to MH. Got a DRO.
Then got a bill for overpayment of HB and am now 9k in debt.

blackvelvetband · 14/10/2018 22:40

Joint income of about £60k
About £17k in cards.
£11k on a car but it's PCP so I don't know if you count that?

This is a drastic reduction from about 5 years ago. We had over £40k in unsecured debt plus our mortgage! It terrifies me just thinking about it.
Plan is to be totally debt free in next 3 years, with the exception of a car

MrsTommyBanks · 14/10/2018 22:42

I don't understand why people don't count a mortgage as debt?

thegreylady · 14/10/2018 22:42

No debt, no mortgage and very little saved but income is secure (pensions) so no real financial worries.

SciFiFan2015 · 14/10/2018 22:43

Lots of debt plus mortgage. I don't actually know our household income. However we have enough in savings to clear our un-secured debt but we'd rather hold onto that capital at the moment. 2 of our debts are 0% credit agreements and the other will be paid off in June. I am lucky that I can freelance and have a job I'm due to be paid for that will make a big dent in one of our debts. So I'm hopeful we'll be debt free (with the exception of the mortgage) by June next year. Maybe sooner if I get another two freelance bookings.
Mortgage is big but repayment. We've got 23 years to go...

GoodbyeSummer · 14/10/2018 22:45

Household income of roughly £20K. We owe about £25K.
The big loan, the catalogue and the car finance will all be paid off in around 2-3 years. When that's gone we can concentrate on paying off the credit cards.

MaMisled · 14/10/2018 22:47

None at all. Have worked really hard to get every thing paid off.

SciFiFan2015 · 14/10/2018 22:47

Oh I didn't put a figure on our debt it's about £6,500 (not including mortgage)

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 14/10/2018 22:48

None.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 14/10/2018 22:49

Tell a lie. I owe very £300 for one of those hair blasting things. But that's interest free and i'll just pay it off next year.

TAMS71 · 14/10/2018 22:54

I was £23k in debt 4yrs ago, declared self bankrupt so none now (maybe a little behind in a household bill or 2 but not much). Just about to take on a lease car for £195 a month but that will include everything other than petrol and replaces the bankruptcy payments which have recently ended. Now on 40k salary. Looking forward to next year when my £150pm student loan ends :).

MouseholeCat · 14/10/2018 22:54

£75k household income, £24,000 in debt.

DH has £14,000 in US student loans which he'll have paid off by this time next year- 6 months ago it was £30,000. I had £10,000 for my MSc which I've now paid off.

We've also got a car loan of about £20,000 (0%) which I really, really hate having BUT we have a very reliable, fuel efficient car for DH's long commute.

So far work has meant we've moved around too much for buying a property to be financially sound, but once the student loan is gone that's our goal.

DisneyMillie · 14/10/2018 22:54

Technically we have a mortgage but we have the money in the bank to repay it if we wanted to so no net debt (it’s just a really good interest rate product so we want to keep it in case we move). Partly due to luck of inheritance and partly buying a much cheaper place than we could have stretched to when younger and saving hard when earning well pre children.
