AIBU to hate craft

Alicatz66 · 13/10/2018 15:08

This is a lighthearted thread for a Saturday afternoon ... but does anyone else hate craft ? I can't bear making things.. used to dread it when my kids were small .. all that gluing and stitching and making shit pictures out of buttons and feathers and stuff !! My idea of hell is being trapped inside "Kirsties Homemade Christmas" weaving gifts Smile

I can cope with anything other than glitter and sequins!! Angry

Nissemand · 13/10/2018 15:15

I hate it too. Both doing it, and receiving hand crafted gifts.

Coasters, cards, badly sewn toys, decorated random stuff for the house. I bin them all.

School projects involving making piñatas, a 3D representation of the water cycle, a cake shaped like a human eyeball...hideous time wasting shit.

I decorate a tree at Christmas, and that's about as crafty as I get.

Nissemand · 13/10/2018 15:16

Oh, I do love glitter and sequins though.

But not for crafts, only to look at and run my fingers through. Blush

Very excited to buy paint, aprons, stampy things. Up extra early. Proudly put newspaper on table with masking tape. I had so clearly been right when I thought I should be on Blue Peter presenting. 2 very excited pre-schoolers.

Ten frantic minutes later. I kid you not and the prep room soooo much longer. Total mucky slop on 2 pieces of paper. Handprints on clothes (despite aprons) and most surfaces between dining room and sink. En suite was a murky mess. Mum up late cleaning up. Blue Peter application form torn up.

Painting now done at school only.

LittleMe03 · 13/10/2018 15:31

@NWQM 🤣🤣🤣

tempname111 · 13/10/2018 15:42

I hate it with a passion. Gave it a go when DS was little. Thankfully DS hated it as well. We're both spectacularly shit at all things arty Grin

We used to groan if there was some "project" or drawing/poster homework. Now we just cobble something together and if anyone criticises we explain that it's abstract Wink

Sparklingbrook · 13/10/2018 15:48

Whenever possible I would make them do craft/art outside. They had an easel and would spend ages painting then hanging them on the line to dry before being binned.

The Play Doh Barbers used to make me twitchy. I would allow it on the dining table, but worry about the carpet a lot.

Athena51 · 13/10/2018 15:55

YANBU I don't enjoy it, I'm no good at it and it seems to be more time-consuming and expensive than going to the shops and buying something similar.

I do enjoy watching things like that Sewing Bee programme or the Kirstie ones (especially the Christmas ones but I'm a Christmas addict) and I admire people who are good at it.

I love cooking and baking though Smile

369thegoosedrankwine · 13/10/2018 15:55

I'm with you. I hate crafty things, always have always will. I have neither the skill or the patience to knit, sew, draw or crochet.

I am creative in other areas as I love writing and cooking but nothing crafty.

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 13/10/2018 15:58

Even half assed craft makes me so glad the previous owners of our house replaced all the downstairs carpets with hard floors. I fucking hate craft and am awful at it. By the time you factor in materials and stress, I can buy whatever it is cheaper on eBay.

KC225 · 13/10/2018 15:59

Noooooooo I spent all afternoon making Halloween invitations. To.orriw we are making concrete hands into rubber gloves to put in the garden to look like the dead are rising. I bloody love a bit dondraw the line at anything heart shaped or framed!

SputnikBear · 13/10/2018 16:03

I like doing craft things with DC which go straight in the bin It’s only for fun - I couldn’t imagine giving them to anyone. Ok, I might let DC give the odd handmade card to a relative but that’s it.

I hate when grown adults give you tacky handmade rubbish and expect you to love it. I’ve had a tree topper angel made from a peg and a doily, a snow globe made out of a plastic tub, decoupage coasters, etc. I can live with food and knitted things if they’re done well. But the rest should have gone in the recycling!

Alicatz66 · 13/10/2018 16:06

369thegossedrankwine.. yes ... I love writing too .. and am an avid reader .. but I want to shove the whole of craft and all its homespun shite into room101 !

God no. I was so glad when dd got past the glittery shit stage.

And whilst I have no objection to anyone's hobbies (within reason) no, I'd rather have no present than one you've made yourself if you're over the age of 4. And you know what, all those people who say the acorn earrings you gave them are gorgeous, are probably lying.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 13/10/2018 16:15

I've just realised I even hate the word "craft" Confused

Alicatz66 · 13/10/2018 16:25

BookMeOnTheSudExpress .. Acorn earrings GrinGrinGrin

I hate it too. I’m currently in a psych hospital and most of the organised activities are arts and craft based.
I was on home leave last night and the first thing my children asked this morning is to do painting, my heart sank

KC225 · 13/10/2018 16:31

Alicatz66 BookMeOnSudExpress Come on ladies, it's all very well to mock craft but I think we all agree that acorn earrings are a misappropriation of nature.

SoozC · 13/10/2018 16:41

As a primary teacher I love it all... Including stuff I don't do with the kids, like make my own clothes, soap or jam and knit. But I appreciate it's not for everyone and don't often give it away as gifts! Grin

SoozC · 13/10/2018 16:42

And I definitely don't make acorn earrings.

labazs · 13/10/2018 17:17

Glitter no no no anything festive involves tons of the damn stuff all over me the dogs my partner nope

distantstars · 13/10/2018 17:20

YABU.... and I say this as I try to clear my spare room of all my lovingly saved craft pile I have grown for the past few years 😫😫😫

SerenDippitty · 13/10/2018 17:25

I hate it. Someone I work with is brilliant at it and can produce beautiful things out of any old crap but I am rubbish at it.

ByTheSea · 13/10/2018 17:30

YANBU. Me too!

flopsyrabbit1 · 13/10/2018 18:16
