Been healthy eating for the last 3 weeks, restricting calories to around 1200 a day and also going to the gym 3 times a week.

I thought may have lost a bit of weight but I’ve weighed myself and I’ve gained a fucking lb! I’m so upset!

I know you’re all going to say maybe I’ve gained some muscle but I honestly have inspected my body in the mirror and I can see no difference at all either.

I’m going to stick with it but it’s so disheartening to not see any results at all.

Any suggestions on how I can speed it up?

Typical day food wise-

Breakfast:
Bowl of melon, strawberries and raspberries
Green tea

Lunch:
Home made soup (or occasionally Covent Garden soup - 200 cals)

Dinner:
Lean chicken with potatoes (minimal) and mostly veg like broccoli, fine green beans etc) all logged on calorie counter.

Snacks:
Highlights hot chocolate in the evening (38 cals) to satisfy my sweet tooth.
Banana

At the gym I tend to do a 45-60 min class 3 x a week and also 20-30 mins cardio on either the treadmill or step machine.

Any ideas how I can speed this up?

Give it another couple of weeks. I find with diets you need to run for a full menstruel cycle to get the full picture as to whether it’s working. That’s also a very restrictive diet and how much do you weigh? Because that will make a difference too

AuntBeastie · 12/10/2018 09:37

Give it time. I know it’s hard to hear but it’s still early days!

Also - take your measurements. It’s often much a more effective indicator of progress than your weight.

Northernlass69 · 12/10/2018 09:37

Yes keep going. If you're def only eating 1200 calories then it will start to drop off, assuming that you are overweight. Record your measurements too.

hellsbellsmelons · 12/10/2018 09:44

Weights is the best thing you can do in the gym
Keeps burning calories way beyond the finish time of the work out.

Cut down on the sugary fruit.
Something like oats and yogurt for breakfast would be better.
Or omlettes or some other protein.
Some people are OK with a lot of fruit and others are not.
There is a lot of sugar in fruit.
See if cutting down on the fruit helps.

Are you drinking a lot of water?
Does your gym offer a free personal training session and a dietary session?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/10/2018 09:45

That's disheartening OP. Are you due on your period as this can add "weight". Keep doing what you're doing though.

Emma765 · 12/10/2018 09:45

3 weeks isn't long, keep going. Ditch the scales and get a tape measure instead.

LittleMissYorkshireLass · 12/10/2018 09:48

I haven't really lost much weight since I started exercising, and I don't see any difference in the mirror but my clothes fit me better and my partner said he can really see the difference, I also find I weigh more at certain points in my cycle too.

You're doing really well and of nothing else you will be healthy.

Sickandtired02 · 12/10/2018 09:49

Try grapefruit my husband and mil swear by it to speed up weightloss and my mil has lost 4 stone since summer she looks fantastic.

teaandtoast · 12/10/2018 09:49

Do you scales measure body fat percentage?
I'm dieting and exercising. Some weeks my weight goes up slightly, but I can see my body fat's come down, so I'm happy.

MatildaTheCat · 12/10/2018 09:49

I feel you pain. Keep going and it will begin to drop off. I agree about the menstrual cycle comment. I can weigh more in the morning, too as I seem to retain fluid until my kidneys put in a shift and flush some out. Smile

Thehop · 12/10/2018 09:52

Sounds like you’re being too restrictive if I’m honest!

It also depends how much you have to loose. If you’re already quite slim it’ll be slow going

I’m a size 18-20 and joined weight watchers 2 weeks ago and have lost 10lb. But I’m massive so I’d expect to!

InstagramPork · 12/10/2018 11:09

I’m 5ft 1 and currently weigh 10st 8lbs so I’m at least a stone overweight but realistically I need to lose 2 stone.
I’m a size 12-14 and for my height should be a 10 at most.
I drink around 2-3 litres of water a day.

The exercise classes I did today for example were 45mins of dance aerobics followed by 45 mins of “body blast” which is kettlebells and squats etc

@Sickandtired02 really? What do they do? Have it for breakfast? I’ll try anything right now. I feel so fat and ugly, I could cry Sad

My cycle shouldn’t cause much fluctuation as I’m on the pill so don’t ovulate and my hormones are pretty stable because of it

My husband and mil have a glass of grapefruit juice or a grapefruit after each meal then their dieting they help to burn fat. Tomatoes are also supposedly good for this.

FooFighter99 · 12/10/2018 11:39

Get yourself on Slimming World

I've lost 1st 5lbs in 8 weeks and you don't have to restrict food or "diet"!!! I do have a hell of a lot to lose though (10ish stone) so I am finding it's coming off quite well at the moment.

It really does work Grin

ShadyLady53 · 12/10/2018 11:41

I restricted my calories below 1400 for 4 bloody years and upped exercise and kept steadily gaining until I was 2 stone heavier and in a mess. Everyone says eat less move more and didn’t believe me when I said I was doing that and gaining. The GPs I saw about the weight gain and other symptoms just kept telling me to eat less, move more and wouldn’t listen when I said I was doing that already and sick of being on a diet.

After getting sick and tired of it, I paid for a private blood test. Turns out I have sub-clinical hypothyroidism, extremely low ferritin and high cortisol amongst other things. I paid to see a private endocrinologist and he explained that I would be gaining weight with all of the results that came through and that my metabolism would be very slow. Dieting would only slow it further. So all those years of calorie restriction were making me worse.
It’s taken some time and medication but in the past few weeks I’ve lost 3lbs without restricting calories. Before I could be an angel and gain 3lbs in a week.

Long term, if you are not losing weight but eating healthily and exercising, it could easily be a hormonal/metabolic problem.

The Shred lady (Jillian?) has a good book about mastering your metabolism available from all good booksellers! Might be worth a read.

BiscuitsAndGravy · 12/10/2018 11:42

I think you've got too many sugary carbs. Try less carbs and you'll probably see results.

sparkles212 · 12/10/2018 11:45

Youre not eating nearly enough. Topped with the exercise it's a wonder you've got any energy left.

sleepyhead · 12/10/2018 11:46

It sounds like you might be restricting too much - this can have a detrimental effect on your metabolism, so even if it's got nothing to do with how little/much you've lost currently, in the long term it's not going to do you any good.

You need to find out your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (loads of calculators if you google) and then limit yourself to around 500 cal below that. That should give you 1-2lbs a week weight loss which is sustainable (you may get more to start with if you've got quite a lot to lose but it'll likely be mainly water weight).

Minimum for women is 1200 a day - don't go under this.

All your exercising will also be burning extra calories so you're probably undereating if you're not taking this into account.

Are you strictly recording your intake and weighing your food/using cup measures? It's very easy to underestimate how much you're eating. I found MyFitnessPal very easy to use but you must measure your food.

There's no magic to it - calories in, calories out. If you're measuring your intake accurately then the weight will come off. Give it a bit more time.

Heartofglass12345 · 12/10/2018 11:56

I think you could probably eat more, have a look at team RH fitness. I personally wasn't a big fan but if you're exercising it might work for you, they tell you how many calories you can eat and you have to do 15000 steps a day

InstagramPork · 12/10/2018 12:00

Yes I measure everything. At a healthy weight for my height I should only be consuming 1500 max to prevent from gaining weight according to the nhs website. So 1200 might sound like hardly anything but it is about right for losing weight for my height and build (I am tiny).
I am using my fitness pal so I’m logging my exercise which then adjusts my calories so I’m not under eating... 1200 calories net, not in total iyswim. So sometimes I may have 1400-1500 but have burned off 200-400 during exercise.
I’m trying not to go above 1200 net.

I hated slimming world if I’m honest, I don’t eat enough to lose anything on it and it didn’t work for me.

I think I need to just stick with it. Maybe my scales are messed up too because I weighed myself again just now and it’s now showing a 2lb loss?!

Ffs I just feel vile
