Cutlery.

Cut-le-ree
Not cuttle-ree

Sets my teeth on edge. What pronunciations annoy you?

A million MN threads and it’s only now that I’ve found out that to English folk ar is the same as ah! I did think that people were using an R sound and just adding "the random r"!

Juells · 12/10/2018 11:35

Also DH with his 'chimley'

I can sort of understand chimley or chimbley - the mn in the middle of chimney, like the lm in film, is a difficult transition if you start thinking about it... The original word, cheminee, was easier to pronounce because of the i between the m and the n. Same with film, which was originally filmen, so the transition from the l to m was easier.

(doesn't know what she's talking about Grin )

We use Jai for Jay, taught in school btw, in the North of Scotland so not just a Glaswegian thing.
Also pronunciation is interesting.
Wednesday becomes Widinsday
Nappy is often Hippin especially with the older generation
Sharn with the r pronounced means shit
Library sounds as it spelled, so Librrarry, Rhotic r obviously.
Scone as the food is Scon and Scone in Perth is pronounced Scoon etc.

Me too OvO !

haha, puzzling right enough

DH pronounces "auction" as "ockshn". I always feel compelled to reply by ostentatiously talking about "orkshns" but it hasn't changed anything

You pronounce 'auc' as 'ork'?

Sorry I'm with your DH here, it's ock

MissCherryCakeyBun · 12/10/2018 11:47

Poe-lease
Garidge
Pacificly
Rest-raunt
Libe-ra-rary ( I worked in one for 8 years and heard this every single day Confused)

buscaution · 12/10/2018 12:02

I also know someone who says....

AM BLEE INCE

for Ambulance

I mean HOW? Just how?

It's a work colleague who I previously considered to be of reasonable intelligence Grin

Thatstheendofmytether · 12/10/2018 12:02

DH pronounces "auction" as "ockshn". I always feel compelled to reply by ostentatiously talking about "orkshns" but it hasn't changed anything

But it's not "orkshin" there is no R in the work at all 😂

LividAtDolphins · 12/10/2018 12:06

Have we had the complaining about extra Rs in the middle of words yet where Scottish people pretend not to understand non Scottish pronunciations?

They've arrived!

MattBerrysHair · 12/10/2018 12:07

My dp is from the Midlands and says bold when he means bald. I didn't realise it was a regional thing until now (soz dp!)

He also says premise as preMISE rather than PREMiss. I realise it shows that he has learned the word through reading and I shouldn't criticise, but it still niggles me a little.

My dc's dad is American and the dc come out with all sorts of Americanisms, like MISSle instead of missILE. Hmm

BumDisease · 12/10/2018 12:08

"DH pronounces "auction" as "ockshn". I always feel compelled to reply by ostentatiously talking about "orkshns" but it hasn't changed anything"

I'd keep my mouth shut if I were you.

BumDisease · 12/10/2018 12:10

"Have we had the complaining about extra Rs in the middle of words yet where Scottish people pretend not to understand non Scottish pronunciations?"

We understand different pronunciations, we just don't understand why you'd write "r" in a pronunciation guide if there isn't actually one being said. 🙄

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 12:14

Like i said, incorrect pronunciation of a letter sound isn't down to an accent. It's just not right. If any of my DC's came home and told me they were being taught jai instead of jay, I would be right up to see the head teacher

It’s not wrong, so you’d look a bit foolish doing that.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 12:16

No, it’s because you don’t understand non-rhotic accents.

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 12:19

I read an r in a spelling out as it is meant, not as it reads.

The sly wee digs that Scottish people are somehow stupid are starting to irritate me.

Thatstheendofmytether · 12/10/2018 12:19

No it's probably because if we added a random R into a word it would sound ridiculous. Try saying "orkshn" or "armond" in a Scottish accent.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 12:20

It’s why these types threads are really a little pointless because you have whole swathes of people reading the phoenetic spellings in different accents and it just doesn’t work.

As an aside, I’ve been forced to watch quite a lot of the BBC antique programmes with my mum recently and there are some presenters/experts with wonderful Scottish accents. It’s interesting to my English ears to hear the Rs all being pronounced.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 12:21

No it's probably because if we added a random R into a word it would sound ridiculous

No one is adding random Rs into words. That is the point.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 12:21

Are and ah are exactly the same pronunciation in a generic English accent.

LividAtDolphins · 12/10/2018 12:22

No it's probably because if we added a random R into a word it would sound ridiculous

Right. Which is why if a PP says they pronounce it "orction", then it's pretty clear that they must have a non-rhotic accent. I'm sure everyone can figure that out. So pretending we think they must be pronouncing it with a rhotic R and informing them how wrong they are is disingenuous and tedious.

Thatstheendofmytether · 12/10/2018 12:22

Hmm agree to disagree.

BumDisease · 12/10/2018 12:25

"No one is adding random Rs into words. That is the point."

They are when writing words out. Unless people are actually, intentionally saying "orction" and it's not just the accent making the "aw" part sound like "or.".

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 12:26

They are when writing words out

No they aren’t.

FFS

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 12:27

Unless people are actually, intentionally saying "orction"

That is how auction sounds. Or and awe sound exactly the same.
