To think middle aged people shouldn’t get tattoos?

I am breaking up with my DP.

I am thinking I’d like to get a tattoo (my first) which would mark my new found freedom from him. It would be a secret thing I’d know about and he never would because it’s over between us. That kind of thing.

The thing is, I’m in my 40s and there’s a part of me that’s being very judgemental, thinking I’m too old/getting a tattoo at my age would be sad.

AIBU? And if so what tattoo should I get and where?

A) 40s is NOT middle aged

No, 36 is if we live to 72!

Each to their own but even though they are so popular and mainstream now, I still think they look hard, brash, common (is what my mum would't said.)

In your 40s is not middle aged how?

I don't have tatoos because I never thought of anything that I felt certain that I would want marked on my body for the rest of my life. As I get older, the odds improve because I've got less time to live with it and regret it, and I know myself better to choose something personal not dated so am less likely to pick something regrettable. Plus you've got a better idea of which parts of your body are aging better than others
Some tatoos are beautiful works of art.

DM finally got her ears pierced at 70 Grin If you want to do something to yourself for yourself, you're never too old Smile

(PMSL at the thought of being middle aged in a couple years at 40... I got my alcohol confiscated earlier this year Grin)

" but it's also pretty much a state of mind... grin"

Oh don't be silly.

"A) 40s is NOT middle aged

No, 36 is if we live to 72!"

I don't think it's 'life expectancy at birth' that counts. Our life expectancy goes up as we age. If we consider that it's about 80 then 40 is definitely middle aged.

I think tats are sign of insecurity.
A friend who just recently turned 50, went and had the full sleeve....looks so chavvy!
He's also started dressing like his teenage son too.

Personally I think its pathetic, but his life, his body so who gives a shit!

I have one small tattoo on my hip. I had it done when I was 19. I am 50 now I have never regretted it.
Good luck and may the future be kind.

Thanks rickoshay - I’d go for a very small tasteful one!
