to worry about DH?

I'm committing the MN cardinal sin of posting in AIBU for traffic.

DH suffers from migraines and seemed to go down with one last Thursday, a really bad one. It hasn't followed the normal pattern and he has remained at a high level of pain since Friday. He cannot tolerate moving, talking, any light. I phoned NHS Direct at 3am on Monday when he was incoherent with pain and they told me about NICE fever guidelines (he hasn't got a fever) and we saw the emergency GP later that day who prescribed Tramadol which just made him itch.

Nothing has worked. The tramadol, aspirin, codeine, ibuprofen, migril, paracetamol (not all at the same time, tried different things according to advice). Not even taken off the edge.

Today he's started vomiting violently.

We have another appointment at 11am.

What is it? This is not a migraine. It's just not fitting his lifelong pattern. 20 years together and he's actually called in sick for the very first time.

I saw your post & wondered about viral meningitis straight away as it sounded exactly the same as what I had last year.

It took me three months to get back to work.

Make sure he doesn’t overdo it (easier said than done I know). Maybe check out meningitis now online as they’re a charity that deal with both bacterial and viral meningitis & the recovery.

Genuinely, all the best though. I can’t imagine what my other half went through when I came down with it & everyday I’m grateful for what he did for me & thw kids while going through a tough time personally himself.

Hope you’re all doing ok & you partner is doing better now

2 things come to mind.
Photophobia due to presence of foreign specimen in the eye or other causes.
Overuse of phones/tvs could have an effect.
The sensitivity to light, migraine and vomiting are also symptoms of a brain aneurysm.

I can't find anything online which suggests family members need anti-virals.

His main problem genuinely seems to be his back. It really hurts and is only comfortable if he lies in the exact position he was in when they did the lumbar puncture. It's only been a couple of days though and they said it would take a week for his back to heal.

Oh OP I’ve just read through the whole thread, you’re being so brilliant and brave. My DH suffers from migraines but not to your DH’s extent and I’m always terrified when he had a particularly bad one.

Offering a handhold for you and DH Flowers

When my step Dad got it we all had to have anti virals. I remember them well as they were huge bright red pills.

fifithefoof · 13/10/2018 12:19

Although that was probably over 20 years ago.

ShowOfHands · 13/10/2018 13:00

Fil and my brother have both had viral meningitis. I've asked both and their wives/children didn't need anti-virals. It might be an individual's hospital policy or outdated? I did find a study that suggested they don't prevent viral meningitis and vaccination against chicken pox, mmr etc was more effective as a general preventative. Who knows?

Fingers crossed for you all - when dsis had a lumbar puncture many years ago it was at least a week before her back felt better. And I'm another one shouting at Mr Show of hands not to go back on Tuesday !
That is far too soon - can't imagine his back will be comfortable by then, neither mind the meningitis

I just remember being made to take them when my sister had it , with the warning they change the colour of your wee.

Was quite dramatic.

Trumpton · 13/10/2018 17:29

DS had viral meningitis presented the same . I came home to find him curled up on the drive sobbing with the pain . Big strapping 16 year old . I thought it was a migraine at first but meds didn’t touch it all.
MR SHOWY ... DON’T be a foolish hero . Give it time and don’t rush back to work . It took a long time for DS to get back to normal.
