to worry about DH?

ShowOfHands · 10/10/2018 09:17

I'm committing the MN cardinal sin of posting in AIBU for traffic.

DH suffers from migraines and seemed to go down with one last Thursday, a really bad one. It hasn't followed the normal pattern and he has remained at a high level of pain since Friday. He cannot tolerate moving, talking, any light. I phoned NHS Direct at 3am on Monday when he was incoherent with pain and they told me about NICE fever guidelines (he hasn't got a fever) and we saw the emergency GP later that day who prescribed Tramadol which just made him itch.

Nothing has worked. The tramadol, aspirin, codeine, ibuprofen, migril, paracetamol (not all at the same time, tried different things according to advice). Not even taken off the edge.

Today he's started vomiting violently.

We have another appointment at 11am.

What is it? This is not a migraine. It's just not fitting his lifelong pattern. 20 years together and he's actually called in sick for the very first time.

Oh op. What a nightmare roller coaster you've been on.

So pleased to read your update.

Hope he recovers quickly.

Gods, hooray for treatable! Hope he kicks the virus quickly and gets all the best painkillers

And I hope you're getting lots of tea and cake to combat any relief-shakes

Cocolepew · 11/10/2018 13:21

So pleased to hear this, I hope his recovery is swift.
DD had this as a toddler and improved quickly and well.

Whatsthisbear · 11/10/2018 13:33

Thanks for updating, glad he is feeling much better. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 11/10/2018 15:16

That's really good news, albeit still awful for your poor DH. Here's to drugs! Sex and rock n roll can wait 😝

stayathomegardener · 11/10/2018 15:29

Wow what a roller coaster for you both.

You are dealing with this so rationally I'm in awe.

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 11/10/2018 15:41

Thank goodness! YAY!

SilverHairedCat · 11/10/2018 17:13

Viral meningitis! Thank goodness. Hope he has a swift and sensible recovery. The Job can wait. Tell him not to go back a day too bloody soon!

IDoLoveToBeBesideTheSeaside · 11/10/2018 18:34

Hope he gets better soon Flowers.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 11/10/2018 19:36

Great news Flowers

letsdolunch321 · 11/10/2018 20:30

Glad he is on the mend. Try and get some rest tonight

FaithInfinity · 12/10/2018 21:11

How’s he been today Show?

ShowOfHands · 12/10/2018 22:02

He's like a different person from 2 days ago. He's very tired still and feels pretty wobbly on his feet but he's at home and drug free. Head is woozy but not sore. His back really hurts though and he can't sit comfortably or lie on his side. I suppose that's normal with a lumbar puncture though.

His big boss has been lovely. She's phoned me and DH and been supportive, kind and v clear about him doing a phased return when ready. He's going back on Tuesday (he's on rest days Sat Sun Mon) and I suspect he'll throw himself back into it. He never, ever takes time off.

Interestingly, they told us that the meningitis was caused by varicella which is chicken pox, right? Anyone know if it's like shingles and it's a reactivation or if he's been in contact with it? Just curious really. They said he shouldn't be around under 12s or the immuno-compromised regardless as there's a small risk of passing on viral meningitis for a couple more days. They've also insisted on testing for hiv which was a bit of a curve ball. It's because he's v healthy and shouldn't really get varicella meningitis apparently. 99.9% sure it's just bad luck but it does give you pause when the consultant starts grilling you about how you're feeling and if you're prone to illness before announcing the hiv/meningitis thing Shock. He has to be seen in a clinic in 2 weeks to check he's recovered but hopefully, it's all done with and we can get on with planning Christmas (he's working the 25th to the 31st Dec inclusive).

What a rollercoaster eh? I am exhausted today. I've got a sore throat and no voice and could sleep for a week. I haven't had a proper meal since Tuesday really and I've been up with dh for a week so this weekend will be sleep, food, sleep and sleep!

The teenage son of friends has recently been in hospital with viral meningitis. Like your DH, he's pretty fit and healthy normally and no-one really knows how he got it.

MiniCooperLover · 12/10/2018 22:31

What a tough time for you both OP. As a word of caution, I worked with someone who had Viral Meningitis, he was unwell and off work for almost 6 months. He wasn't a necessarily physically strong person to start with but it took a good 6 months for him to recover fully. Please try to encourage DH not to go too hard too fast with work.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/10/2018 22:48

I agree with MiniCooper. I think planning to go back to work on Tuesday is a little over ambitious.

Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery, and to you for all the worry you have been through Flowers

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/10/2018 22:50

Good grief Showy I'm another one saying phew "just" viral meningitis (wtf!).

Take care of yourself too, Mrs.

ShowOfHands · 12/10/2018 22:56

Giblets

You don't need to convince me, it's the snoring wazzock over there. He doesn't listen to reason.

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/10/2018 23:12

Good gal. Sleep eat, rinse, repeat.

TomHardysNextWife · 12/10/2018 23:27

That's amazing he's home already. Even if in denial about going back to work so quickly!! Make sure you look after you too, it's horrendous when someone is that poorly and you are living on adrenaline for days Flowers

stayathomegardener · 13/10/2018 00:02

I'm surprised they haven't offered you and close family members the antivirus.

That was certainly procedure 20 years ago. Keep an eye on your sore throat joust in case.

And great positive update!

kateandme · 13/10/2018 00:04

just tell him if he goes back too soon so as not to be off work and isn't recovered.he will then be off for far longer as his body will just stop!uncle had this and went back far toon soon thinking he was ok enough...he wasn't and he just kept hitting this wall over and over where it literaly disabled him and he got a new infection from pushing through.
so glad you got this sorted.to think how you came on here with you op thread and all the different views.thank god u listened to ur gut.take lots of care.sounds like uve got a really good realtiosnhpi so be there for eachother now and all will be well.strap him to the bed if needs be!

kateandme · 13/10/2018 00:06

especially watch at the moment because its flu vaccine month so that will put people under 12 and the immune sepressed even more risky
