AIBU?

to think that the worst part of a cold is the gravelly throat?

I’ve just started with what I can already tell is going to be a really horrible cold. I’m feeling extra sorry for myself because it’s staryed with a gravelly throat (as always for me - don’t know if that’s typical for everyone else) and I HATE the 2 gravelly throat days sooooo much! You can’t take anything to relieve the symptom and it makes me feel sick and retchy every time I swallow. I find it more debilitating than the full blown snots and cough that follows. WAH.

I would have agreed with you - until I got pregnant and then breastfed and couldn’t take decongestant. Having a blocked up nose and not being able to do any more than crap like sit in a steamy bathroom or chew air waves gum was even worse!

But YANBU overall. It’s awful and it’s there every time you swallow, saying cheerily, “hi! I’m going to make you feel and look like shit for the next few days Grin”.

Bastard things.

I am in the same stage of an oncoming cold now. It's absolutely shit isn't it.

I hate the gravelly throat, but it's the runny nose that does me in. I would rather be bunged up!

That said, it's no fun sounding like you're on 50 a day and it does tend to make you feel more rubbish as a result. YANBU.

I find that ice cream helps, hope you feel better soon :)

No definitely the throat is the worst Sad I’ve had a bad throat for around 3 weeks it’s vile.

The throat is awful but I have to agree with Stephisaur that the constant runny nose is the worst. Especially if it goes on so long that you end up with a sore nose from too much blowing and wiping with tissues.

My autumn cold is setting in and as with every cold I get, the worst bit is definitely the blocked nose at night 😖😭

I have the throat currently and am constantly sucking cough sweets with antiseptic in them, even over night just to stop me retching. It’s horrible.

I just got over a real snot-fest and I have to say that for me it's always that 1 or 2 nights where I just CANNOT breathe through my nose. I can only manage about 3-4 minutes of mouth-breathing before my throat dries out completely and I'm lunging frantically for the water, so I just can't sleep and feel ten times worse the following morning (can you tell I need sleep?!)

You have my sympathies, OP. Get well soon! Thanks

Flowers for all the cold afflicted MNers.

I think I hate the gravelly throat so much because nothing works to ease it (whereas when you get to the proper sore throat phase you can take cocodamol to ease the pain at least) and also because it makes me feel so nauseous.

I eagerly await the not being able to breathe through nose bit though as that is always super fun. And extra sympathy for pregnant people with colds because I remember feeling like it was barbaric that I wasn’t allowed decongestants when I felt so rough.

Anyone else get the shits when they’ve got a cold? raises hand Sad

I hear gargling salt water helps for that initial throat gravel, but I can't say whether it works as the only time I tried my body rejected this and I ended up seesawing salt water all over my wall.

Mine has just started too. It is sweeping my workplace (freshers, horrid little germ monkeys!), in about two days time, if it goes the way of everyone else, I will have lost my voice - but phoning in sick because of a 'sore throat' just sounds so lame, even though I know it will be excruciating.

But yes, OP, that feeling you could throw up, the knowledge it will get worse before it gets better, and when it's too low down for gargling to have any effect. It's RUBBISH.

Maybe you have the same one as me? No cough at first, but throat so tight that any gulp of drink left me whimpering in pain and waking up all night. Only a bit of snottiness and coughing, but so dizzy I can't stand.

I am on day 3 of a horrible cold, day 1 was painful, gravelly throat and completely lost my voice. Now I have my voice back - sort of - but am coughing every time I do anything, plus nose is now running like a tap. Am very tired as I could not sleep due to a totally blocked nose. So the worst part of a cold is all of it! As you may be able to tell I am feeling very sorry for myself.

I had the gravelly throat set in on Sunday, and it's been followed by very sinusy headaches. Quite draining. I can take decongestant early in the mornings, but if I take it too late in the day it makes me buzz so evenings are the worst.

I'm looking forward to a few days when I can expel the green gunge and marvel at how it all fitted in my head and understand why my head currently feels like it's being crushed.

I'm also feeling very sorry for myself. Had the gravelly throat and the right wheezing chest yesterday. Today I've got the running nose (throat has eased). Just generally feel rubbish

The nasal decongestant sprays you can get mean that I barely notice a cold any more. So long as I can breathe through my nose I feel pretty okay and they work miracles. Just have to be careful not to overuse them as they can exacerbate the problem and make it last longer. But they're a lifesaver, especially at night.

No, it's definitely the never ending cough! I can cope with sounding a bit gravelly, but when I'm coughing I feel like it will just be for the rest of my life.

The worst bit of a cold is feeling really rotten but not being quite sick enough to take time off work.

The worst part of having a cold is how it affects my breathing when running or swimming. I like the gravelly voice part. It means I have an excuse not to talk to people who are fuckers and that suits me.

When I get a bad one I have a couple of days where I produce so much snot that mopping it up is literally a full time occupation. And boil with sweat at the same time, so I’m generally just a sodden mess. I’d take a gravelly throat over that any day.

I'm over the throat, the head, the running nose and feeling really grotty.

I've now got catarrh and it's horrendous. I sound like a ninety year old smoker trying to clear his nose. I'm using a menthol inhaler thing, but it's not doing anything really.

Yanbu - totally.

Things I missed the most while bf:

Day/Night Nurse
Chloraseptic throat spray - they only thing that helps my throat. I get the throat starting colds too, and they are miserable!
