DS playing immature games!

guildheighliner · 08/10/2018 09:47

Just as it sounds, my DS insists on playing with a group of friends in some sort of fantasy make believe world. He dresses up as an elf and runs around making loads of noise etc.

This would be fine, but I'm starting to think it might damage DSs chances at other friendships and how he interacts with others, its all he seems to talk about and is extremely enthusiastic about it!

Should I try and curtail it?

an evil old crone

I LARP this all the time Grin

CountessVonBoobs · 08/10/2018 13:54

They were both orca

That's quite the role-play Grin

ReanimatedSGB · 08/10/2018 13:58

I was once at a LARP event with DS, who was then 3. Midway through the Saturday afternoon, a load of very elaborately outfitted players came past, one of whom was (as someone later explained to me) a Stone Troll, so their outfit was basically beige slabs and fake rocks. DS took one look at this person and yelled 'Makka Pakka!'
The fact that about half the procession cracked up laughing is, IMO, as good an indication as any that LARPers can have partners and kids... (The bewildered childfree had to have it explained to them, though...)

Sparklesocks · 08/10/2018 14:04

It sounds a bit like you disapprove of your son's hobbies because they aren't conventional or mainstream enough for you, but are framing it as concern for him. Clearly it's not him with the issue.

If he's happy then leave him to it. He should be able to spend his spare time how he likes, and sounds like he has a good group of friends from it. Some young men his age spend all their time cooped up playing video games for 12 hours a day, but your DC is out having fun!

SadieAB9 · 08/10/2018 15:50

This is a type of social life and if it makes him happy then leave him be

SadieAB9 · 08/10/2018 15:51

It's also really popular now and loads of people are really into it - it seems like those who do like it seem to love it!

Willow2017 · 08/10/2018 18:32

I used to be an adventurer like you, before I took an arrow to the knee".

Might get you a slap instead😀
Ds1 and i play that game and i got him a mug with a pictire of a helmet and that well worn phrase written on for xmas...he refuses to use it😁😁😁

iklboo · 08/10/2018 18:49

DS(12) says stuff like 'I used to do my homework...until I took an arrow to the knee' Grin

Willow2017 · 08/10/2018 18:59

'I used to do my homework...until I took an arrow to the knee'

Brilliant excuse 😁😁

Bicyclethief · 08/10/2018 19:13

Is it safe to google larp?

Duskqueen · 08/10/2018 19:19

Leave him to it he is happy ffs. There is nothing wrong with it. Women do larp you know so he can still meet a girlfriend, he is socialising, just not in the way YOU want him to.

LakieLady · 08/10/2018 19:21

I think it sounds like a great hobby: it's creative, he's out of doors, he's meeting a wide range of people - what's not to like?

I also think it sounds like great fun. I like the idea of camping in woods while pretending to be an elf (do you get fat elves?).

MsAwesomeDragon · 08/10/2018 19:27

Well my DD has just joined a LARP ing society at uni. She's been out once (during Freshers week) and thinks it's great fun. So maybe he'll meet someone like her and fall in love, then they can have little baby LARPers.

Leave him be. You only get to do that sort of thing when you're footloose and fancy free. Once the serious job, serious relationship, children, etc starts happening the joyful hobbies have to slow down or even stop Sad

straightjeans · 08/10/2018 19:41

Sounds like you're embarrassed and trying to dress it up as concern to be honest.

Cicera · 08/10/2018 19:48

I'm a bit past being a 'girl', but I LARP!

A lot of people do it as a social event - you're not always 'in character'. I get as much out of the 'real-life' bit as the fantasy bit, if not more.

Is it Empire (up near Silverstone)?

OpiningGambit · 08/10/2018 19:49

Also a lot of people bring their kids to our events, and most of them play too! So he can have a whole little LARP family with ADORABLE BABY COSTUMES!

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 08/10/2018 19:54

Isn't "taking an arrow to the knee" old timey slang for getting engaged/married?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 08/10/2018 20:02

Perfectly acceptable hobby, LARPing is a very friendly and sociable community. He will probably meet plenty of nice women doing it.

OP is probably jealous of all the fun he is having.

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 08/10/2018 20:12

Got a friend who LARPs. He didn’t have sex until he was 28 but hey, he’s married with kids now so 🤷‍♀️ Some girls obviously like it.

NewYoiker · 08/10/2018 20:18

@NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten no it's from the elder scrolls where a character in a cut scene said 'I was going to do it but then I took an arrow to the knee' and it went viral

I was going to walk the dog- but then i took an arrow to the knee etc

Willow2017 · 08/10/2018 20:21

Its usef in 'Skyrim' a by a lot of the guards in the towns. I used to be an adventurer like you till i took an arrow to the knee.

iklboo · 08/10/2018 20:22

@NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten is right. It's supposed to be a euphemism for getting married / settling down from ye olden times that they put into Elder Scrolls.

iklboo · 08/10/2018 20:24

Doh!! Serves me right for not fact checking! It seems there's a grain of truth in it, but it was written for the game. 🧝‍♀️

TatterdemalionAspie · 12/10/2018 21:58

So the goady fucker OP didn't come back then? Surprise surprise. Hmm

agnurse · 12/10/2018 22:25

LARPing isn't illegal, it's creative, and it looks to be a lot of fun. (I have never LARPed but am intrigued by the idea.)

Some women do LARP. Friends of ours are involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism and the wife makes their costumes. She showed me a picture once of a woman who had made an incredibly beautiful medieval European costume based on what women wore during I think Elizabethan times or something. The SCA holds "matches" where people "fight" with recreated swords and other weapons. (There are rules regarding armour - you have to wear a gorget to protect your neck, for example, plus you need a chest protector and a groin protector, among other things.) If you win a coronet match, you become the reigning king or queen of the local chapter. You choose an opposite-sex person to be your consort, and the two of you attend and officiate at SCA activities.
