to believe the UK should take highly-skilled Venezuelan refugees

longfingernails · 05/10/2018 21:59

Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have had to flee from the inevitable consequences of unadulterated socialism.

Amongst them will be highly skilled workers. We should do our best to seek them out and offer them refugee status together with the right to work in Britain.

If we are selective in our choices, in time they could form as effective a bloc as the Floridian Cubans.

MsOliphant · 05/10/2018 23:23

What Brexit?

RedDwarves · 05/10/2018 23:26

I'm guessing you're not very highly skilled if you think that this is remotely feasible.

Or, at the very least, I am guessing you've never taken a basic economics class - macro or micro.

Benandhollysmum · 05/10/2018 23:28

Ms opulent will take the immagrants in, after all she’s teaching us to suck eggs to taxpayers who are sick to death of it all

She will take them in, feed and clothe them and find them jobs by giving up hers, what a kind lady she is, 3 cheers for her- hooray!

Nope that won’t happen wants everyone else to though doesn’t she?

sproutsplease · 05/10/2018 23:30

The UK isn't full, have you heard Nicola Sturgeon talking about immigration? This is a more complicated and nuanced picture than you are painting.

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 05/10/2018 23:30

We can't cut benefits anymore than they already are. Disabled people have an appallingly small amount of money to live off. A refugee is a person in desperate need, their skills are irrelevant. You sound like a sociopath.

MsOliphant · 05/10/2018 23:31

It’s Oliphant.

Oh and I’m a taxpayer- I earn quite a lot of money, actually, so I pay a lot of tax.

The argument that you are presenting is just further showing how uneducated and I’ll-informed you are.

MsOliphant · 05/10/2018 23:31

Ill-informed.

SpoonBlender · 05/10/2018 23:42

Oh, am I on the Daily Mail website? I must have taken a wrong turn.

yorkshireyummymummy · 05/10/2018 23:45

Yes- I stand by what I say.
I’m sick to death of helping other countries.
We have serious problems in this country- why do we ignore them?
Food banks have never in my lifetime been used more than now.
So many people living in crowded, inadequate homes.
So many people in B&Bs, etc waiting for homes.
And god only knows how many on the streets.

Is it mad to want to help these people first?
7salmonsswimming
And yes, it is Karma - or whatever you want to call it- where you are born. Nobody can choose where you are born or what circumstances you are born into- rich or poor, black or white, living in a house or living in a rondaval with no access to clean water. Call it what you will, divine intervention , karma, luck whatever. You have a 0.4% chance of being born in the UK. So what would you call it??
And please don’t blame every civil disturbance/war/riot on the UK. Not everything that happens in the world is as a result of colonialism. Or should I blame the homeless on the Romans for ‘ colonising ‘ England ???

Oswin · 06/10/2018 00:22

Yorkshire it's not like if we help refugees we can't fix our problems.
We have housing issues and poverty because the powers that be have no inclination to fix it.
You really think if we stopped immigration then the tories will suddenly fix the UK?

BigChocFrenzy · 06/10/2018 00:33

So OP, you want to roughly halve the state spending as a % of GDP
Our GDP grows about 2% in a good year, so your aim in practice means halving state spending

The pie chart shows the govt plans for Financial Year 2019:

The biggest cost is pensions at 20% of public spending,
followed by healthcare at 18%
welfare is only 13%

What do you want to cut, to halve the total spend ?
Abolishing pensions + healthcare + welfare would roughly do that

I would expect bloody riots would bring down any govt that attempted your idea
but any party that put that in its election manifesto would be wiped out anyway, by the British voters.

No Western industrialised country can function with 20-25% GDP on public spending.

Bizarre; hands tissues to several posters so they can wipe up the foam and spittle from their mouths.

yesyesyess · 06/10/2018 00:42

Benandhollysmum

What irony? You’ve refused to answer but dictating what everyone should do..

Ask home grown uni students who have no jobs or working in supermarkets what their thoughts on getting jobs they should rightly get but given to everyone else.
Go on student life it’s teaming with, nobody will employ me..

Hiring manager here. The reason is most home grown college students who applied have entitled attitude like yours and they are frankly not as bright as some foreign applicants. I can do with the lack of intelligence but please do one for being entitled.

PickAChew · 06/10/2018 00:44

Unadulterated socialism? Please do explain for the benefit of us plebs.

MilkAndSevenSugars · 06/10/2018 00:44

The correlation between poor spelling, incoherent lines of argument and xenophobia is strong on this thread.

Hands up.. who ordered the gammon? Grin

7salmonswimming · 06/10/2018 00:46

yorkshire one, simple and plainly obvious example. The latest large influx of refugees - people just like you, with partners and children, homes and jobs, daily gripes, illnesses and celebrations, sometimes struggling to make ends meet, sometimes feeling a bit flush, just regular people - cake from Syria. They had no say in where they were born. Just regular people, like you and me. I haven’t the inclination to educate somebody who can say “I’m sick to death of helping other countries”, because your opinion probably isn’t down to just a lack of knowledge. I think you’re probably hostile to foreigners, period (call it racist, if you like). But just hazard a guess where the defence conglomerate that made the most money out of selling weapons to the armed rebels in Syria happens to be domiciled. Take a guess (hint: it’s your country, that you’re so protective of). And now take a guess what percentage of their profits they paid taxes on, taxes that could ensure local people in your beloved homeland (the one that wasn’t bombed by the weapons they profited from) aren’t homeless, reliant on food banks, etc etc (hint: I don’t know how much tax you pay, but unless it’s zero or just marginally more than zero, nowhere near as high a percentage as you do).

And you’re sick of taking in people from other countries? People who’ve been bombed out of their homes, left destitute, maimed, mentally damaged, rendered homeless, desperate for safety, partially by the very people who profited from their situation while laughing at YOU for paying proportionately more tax than they do?

Just a tiny example.

Sort your shit out before you go around foisting it on those your beloved country has supported in decimating. Look outside of your narrow little mind, see who is really having a laugh at your expense.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 06/10/2018 00:46

No, I don't mean disability benefits. I mean unemployment benefit, tax credits, and similar

Erm....I am a teacher of one of the shortage subjects. Plenty of industry experience before joining the profession too. I am entitled to Tax Credits and really need them as a single parent.

In what way am I not skilled? Or of use to our society?

PickAChew · 06/10/2018 00:57

Hmm. Last time I had something nicked, the thieves looked d quite white, under all the muck.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 06/10/2018 01:02

Welcome to Brexit

giggly · 06/10/2018 01:05

“The UK is full” Confused aye of fuck wits posting on mn.
Got to love the “look after our own” fannies out in force tonight/ morning .

Benandhollysmum · 06/10/2018 01:12

Look at all the generous people offering out their homes to refugees, their kids school places and their place in the queue for dentists and doctors.
If the tables were turned would they equally be generous, there’s a lot of resentment towards the Brits, and a lot of countries would love us to sink.
We have took our fair share now we have to start looking after our country if we want a future for our kids.

Right now there’s parts of Britain that are divided by things such as religion and colour, shouldn’t we not sort that out before bringing even more people in from other parts of the world? They’ll be even more divisions and what good is that for kids, when they can’t talk to another kid because they are different?
For countries that are united, it doesn’t feel that way.

Be realistic in what your typing, sort out what’s happening now with our people here first.

RedneckStumpy · 06/10/2018 01:19

Venezuela proves that socialism does not work. I am fairly sure that people fleeing the country are refugees. They are not being persecuted. Perhaps a Australian points visa system should be introduced. Because the UK is massively overpopulated.

Fatasfook · 06/10/2018 01:21

Wow your post reads like someone who has spotted a crashed plane and wants to scavenge for jewels.

EmperorTomatoRetchup · 06/10/2018 01:34

Or, at the very least, I am guessing you've never taken a basic economics class - macro or micro

I've not been on these boards, but when I read the thread title, I knew who'd written it without checking. More tedious right wing dogerel and reactionary ball baggery from a renown wind up merchant. 0/10.
