To think people who claim they never remember names are dicks?

I'm not talking about people who genuinely forget names but rather those who, upon introduction, say "oh I'm terrible with names, I'll never remember yours". To me it's just rude and more or less saying you're not important enough to remember.

I don't mind if I meet someone and then see them a few weeks later and they've forgotten my name - that's not unusual at all, but AIBU to think those who immediately claim they can't remember names just can't be arsed?

Don't feel bad, TuMeke; they both had moustaches.

LauderSyme · 05/10/2018 00:15

Oh blimey OP, you've upset a few people here. If only you'd started your opening post with some sort of disclaimer like "I'm not talking about people who genuinely forget names..." Wink

Here's a song about forgetting people. It makes me laugh and I hope it may lighten the mood around here

Noqont · 05/10/2018 00:18

@noqont, I predicted somebody charmless would make that remark.
I'm confident I'm no more boring than the average person. I meet plenty of ordinary people and yet I can do them the courtesy of not making it obvious that they're forgettable.

Lol. Actually you're right. People may well remember you. For being ignorant and arrogant. Probably wouldnt want to take your number and arrange a second meeting though Smile

Pleased to meet you Dick

Well yes, but aren't people who genuinely forget names likely to say something like:

oh I'm terrible with names, I'll never remember yours? Because they genuinely forget names?

Who decides that one person is 'a dick' and another genuinely forgets? Dicks tell you first that they're likely to? Genuines just let you find out by you calling Dave one week and Penelope the next?

TuMeke · 05/10/2018 00:31

Thanks Harold 😁

LemonysSnicket · 05/10/2018 00:33

It depends - being I introduced to a group of 20, fair. One or 2 new people, rude

TheGirlWhoWasntThere · 05/10/2018 00:37

I really struggle with people's names and faces. I recognise people by their voices. I associate many people I know with where I know them from and if I meet them somewhere unexpected I am lost. I have always been like this and although I try so hard to remember, I just can't and it can be really frustrating, upsetting, embarrassing and difficult.

I would never tell anyone that I wouldn't remember their name though because I suffer from depression and crippling anxiety. I would hate to think anyone thought I was rude, didn't care or that they didn't matter, I just take longer than some to learn names and faces.

LauderSyme · 05/10/2018 00:42

Fair points BetteDavis, I can't disagree with you.

I was being a bit flippant. I suppose I didn't take OP's 'dick' description to heart because I'm usually quite good with names and faces. My brain is like a sieve for dates and times though.

I can see why others would be upset and didn't mean to offend anyone.

Singlenotsingle · 05/10/2018 00:54

I volunteer at dgs's school, helping the children with reading. Unfortunately faced with a class of 25 5yo children, I can't remember their names! They know me but I get their names wrong! Hopeless with faces and names Blush

Disquieted1 · 05/10/2018 00:57

Does anyone remember what Jeremy Thorpe looked like? Me neither.
Maybe someone could dig up an old photo?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 05/10/2018 01:13

I don't think you did offend Lauder. In fact the beginning of your post that I quoted from made me smile even as I took issue with it Grin

That video is so funny!
