To think we might not be going on holiday next April after all?

We stupidly booked a holiday to France for about a fortnight after Brexit. I didn’t even consider brexit at the time, I just considered ds’s Easter holidays. It’s to Disneyland Paris and we’ve been waiting to take the children for ages. We’ve only paid the deposit on the hotel (stopping in Disneyland hotel so expensive if we end up not being able to go) but have paid for the flights.

We are idiots.

Would we be best to cut our losses and not pay the balance on the hotel and book for another time?

No they won't; and you're right, it's not their fault that the UK Government can't secure a deal Sad

But then they shouldn't be making ignorant in the true sense of the word statements like "we can still travel." Because. They. Don't. Know. Confused

BlitheringIdiots · 05/10/2018 15:23

My mother just booked a holiday for June and asked the tour operator the brexit question and she said full refund should the worst happen

IamPickleRick · 05/10/2018 15:26

I am really hoping they said that because it will be a simple case of getting a visa or paying an additional tax or something.

Havanananana · 05/10/2018 15:51

There would be nothing simple about getting a visa, and like so many things with Brexit, something that initially looks simple becomes far more daunting once you start to look at the detail.

UK citizens make about 53 million trips a year to the EU. Clearly that does not mean that 53 million different people travel - some people travel multiple times in a year - but even if we allow an average of around 3 trips a year, that would mean that the EU countries would have to issue 18 million visas from March 2019, mainly in time for the summer tourist season. There is no system in place to do this - the embassies in London would be swamped.

I doubt that visas would become an immediate requirement, but there would still need to be a system for registering British travellers in and out of the Schengen area and for making sure that they don't overstay or exceed any '90 days in 180' allowance, so there could be some very long delays entering and leaving the EU countries.

Angelil · 05/10/2018 16:16

@ManicUnicorn Apparently when people voted leave they were OK with that happening.

I am loving all these people who are saying "just get a visa". Clearly they have no idea about how difficult this actually is.

Ta1kinpeace · 05/10/2018 16:41

Just Get a Visa
Cross your fingers and toes that it is done as efficiently as the Sri Lankans no joke, their system was all online and REALLY easy to use rather than the Americans and I say that as somebody with an eagle passport
let alone the sodding Brits (one week holiday visa for a Tanzanian to come here = £400 and the HOOPS they have to jump though ....)

Dramaticmuch · 05/10/2018 16:45

I haven't read the full thread, but do you have travel insurance? If so, will it cover you if you can't get to France or flights get cancelled? I would be looking for really good travel insurance then carrying on with the planning.

Ta1kinpeace · 05/10/2018 16:52

Don't bet on it
Force Majeure will kick in if there is a hard Brexit

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 17:07

Accepting that Cameron was stupid to call a referendum, the SMART thing for May to have done would be to cost up the whole Brexit package with some, even just fag packet numbers and then once she finished crapping herself, out it to a second vote at that point. All before triggering A50. Reading the basic rules of the EU (4 pillars) and proposing something that fits with that and the issue of the NI/I border would have been good too. Maybe she could have given it to year 10 kids as a 'project'?
Even clarifying what a 'Brexit' is would have been a start.
When you make a cake, do you just throw in random stuff out of the cupboard and fridge?

Mercurial123 · 05/10/2018 17:11

This post has got me thinking about my situation. I'm working in the Middle East and returning home for good with my cat. My original plan was to be flying in with her 1st May with a European airline but book her on a Middle East airline if we don't get a deal I didn't even think this would be an issue.

Now I'm thinking of leaving early March to make sure we arrive home with no issues. It's stressful enough relocating with pets. I bloody hate Brexit.

Ta1kinpeace · 05/10/2018 17:18

Mercurial
So long as you have landed in the UK by the 29th you are fine no matter what.
But with the issue of a cat I would say that better safe than sorry - book your flight for when you KNOW hat there will not be a problem with flights or quarantine

Palmer1983 · 05/10/2018 17:18

It will all be fine I'm sure Confused

TheCherries · 05/10/2018 17:25

Honestly all this panicking! We are not going to be stopped travelling around the globe! We are not going to be made prisoners on our little island.
The worst that will happen is we will find our selves in a slower immigration queue and we will need to either apply for a visa online or fill in a paper document on the plane to identify who we are and where will be staying whilst holidaying.
It is this silly scare mongering which is causing such silly stories in the press. Stop reading the DM and just let the negotiations take place.

Namechanger1404 · 05/10/2018 17:29

I’m off to Austria in April..didnt even think of BrexitSad

I’m quite positive that I’ll still be going thoughGrin

Mercurial123 · 05/10/2018 17:34

Ta1kinpeace thanks am seriously considering leaving early March to make sure she gets on the flight and makes it back home safely.

1tisILeClerc · 05/10/2018 17:34

{Stop reading the DM and just let the negotiations take place.}
Sadly it is what is being written in the technical documents published by the UK government. Yes the DM is crap but in this case, correct.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 05/10/2018 17:36

If you think this is the 'worst that will happen,' then honestly, you really aren't particularly well informed about the potential issues.

It is this silly scare mongering which is causing such silly stories in the press

Are we all just terribly silly? Should we not worry our little heads?

And this is how we arrived at Brexit, isn't it? 'It will all be GREAT!'

Mercurial123 · 05/10/2018 17:36

TheCherries have no idea what the DM are saying but plenty of other news outlets saying the same thing. You are probably right but there are no guarantees.

Satsumaeater · 05/10/2018 17:36

we will need to either apply for a visa online

Or, more likely, attend an embassy in London (or a consulate in another major city like Edinburgh) in person. I wouldn't be worried about the visa issue if it was an ESTA type online application.

zzzaaaccc1 · 05/10/2018 17:39

I'd not even thought of this (voted remain ) I m due to fly to Holland on 29th March for a bloody hen do 😥

Are the daily mail now flagging up problems of Brexit, The cherries? Wow. I thought that and its readers were brexits biggest fans.
